"Averill, you are to be married in Corinna's place."
A year ago, Averill blinked at the words of her father, the head of the Earl of Allingham's family.
"...Um isn't it inappropriate to hand me over for the debt that Corinna has caused?"
"What a vulgar way of speaking, watch your tongue Averill."
Averill kept a calm face and did not seem particularly upset by her father's stern rebuke, because this was an everyday occurrence.
Averill's parents and step-sister were standing in front of her with clear expressions on their faces. Averill was admittedly accustomed to most misfortunes, but she also knew that this one was different.
About ten days ago, Corinna, her step sister, came home in the morning.
Her parents didn't know it, but Corinna was a well-known 'bad girl' around this places who often went out at night. Read only on https://royaltywrites.com.ng/
The night before, she had attended a masquerade ball, of all things.
Corinna met the son of a marquess there, became friendly with him, and spent the night with him. This was a usual occurrence, but this time she was with a dangerous person.
The man's fiancée was the daughter of a wealthy man whom the Earl of Allingham owed a debt to, and after much wrangling, she was told that she had to pay the debt immediately.
"I… didn't mean it that way. I didn't think he had a fiancĂ©e."
"Corinna, everyone makes mistakes. But don't worry, it's okay."
The conversation between my stepsister and stepmother was making me dizzy.
'I don't think it is okay at all…'
When Averill grinned at being called a 'replacement' to her face, her stepmother said triumphantly, "In general, you know, Corinna would never do such a silly thing as a night out. No one would believe such a thing, would they? Because this is the beautiful, smart, and lovely Corinna, isn't she?" Read only on https://royaltywrites.com.ng/
"Yes, Mother. Because Corinna Allingham was not at that ball. The name I gave to the gentleman and his fiancée was Averill Allingham."
At Corinna's response, Averill tilted her head back the other side
'Well… That means…'
Apparently, Averill would not only be married as a scapegoat, but she will also be labeled a 'villainess'. As Averill blinked more and more at this predictable turn of events, her father announced, "Listen, Averill.
"You are going to marry into the Duke of Lanchester's family, to an old, lusty duke who lives in a remote area, in order to pay off the debt you have incurred."
"That's quite a nickname, isn't it?"
"Shut up. The Duke of Lanchester will pay you a lot of money just for marrying him as his second wife. You can imagine what kind of a person he is, considering the fact that he went through the trouble of bringing the marriage proposal at this time." Read only on https://royaltywrites.com.ng/
The Dukes of Lanchester were a prestigious family, related to the royal family, but they rarely appeared in social circles, and their existence was shrouded in mystery.
"...The Duke of Lanchester is certainly an elderly man, but it seems unnatural... for him to take on a new wife now. But that means I'll be marrying in Corinna's place in exchange for a large sum of money."
Corinna, the one who had caused the commotion, smiled at Averill, approached her, and whispered in her ear, "Averill, I'm not going to marry him."
"Averill. You're making me sick. Everyone is talking about it. It's just not right to be able to remember everything at once. There may have been some people who were proud of it, but it's just a curse or something. You're incompetent, so why don't you get the hell out of my house?" 'At last this day has come...! I can finally leave this house...!'
Averill managed to hold back her excitement and gave a small nod. "I understand…"
"Old, lusty Duke", you say... Just wait and watch... (Evil laugh)
