When I was twelve, I became engaged.

The girl I had spent eight years with was Amalia Roseberry, a beautiful woman with ashen hair and emerald eyes. When we first met, she was assertive and outspoken, traits that made me uncomfortable.

My father often praised her, saying she was already very suitable for a future countess. He scolded me to be more steadfast and manly, yet he was the one praising her for being so 'countess-like.'

Around a year into our engagement, I noticed she occasionally contradicted my opinions. I didn't understand why she opposed what I said, but I figured it made me look weak if she stood out like this.

She should have just obediently followed behind me. Then I could protect her.

So, little by little, I molded her into the ideal future Countess.

Vivid dresses were out because they attracted too much attention.

Strong words were not feminine, so they were discouraged.

Playing outside was considered uncouth, so that had to stop.

Trying to appear intelligent was deemed improper.

And above all, openly opposing what I said was absolutely forbidden.

I actually wanted her to quit studying altogether, but I ended up being scolded. She must not have been able to persuade the Count properly.

After a long time, Amalia finally became a proper lady. She always obediently followed my commands, walking gently by my side.

I loved her deeply.

"Calm and obedient... Is that it? In other words, the usual me should be submissive and do whatever you say?"

Amalia started to voice her opinions again. I wondered why she bothered confirming something so obvious.

But why did I feel this way? That was exactly how I wanted Amalia to be, yet hearing it from her mouth...

...It felt like I was treating her like a doll.

I felt awkward, almost as if my secrets had been exposed. But seeing Amalia's mocking expression, anger surged within me for a moment.

What was I misunderstanding? I had made so much effort for Amalia. Everything I did was for her sake, so why should I feel guilty?

"I see, so you have business with Olivia today. In that case, I have no involvement, so if you'll excuse me."

"Olivia and I are just friends. There's absolutely nothing for you to worry about."

She not only refused to listen to me but also chatted amiably with the Duke!

What is happening?

I only had a relationship with Olivia once, and she approached me so passionately. I felt bad to reject her, especially since she resembled Amalia. It didn't seem so bad for our future... But I didn't know Olivia was that kind of woman! So, it's not my fault at all.

I still love Amalia.

"I'll excuse myself now. Have a good day."

All I can think of is that man's detestably refined face and Amalia turning away from me.

"No, didn't Amalia glance back at me?"

In the first place, Amalia was so fond of me. She wouldn't prioritize another man over me. She must have been threatened by the Duke and reluctantly agreed to go out with him. Proof of that is that she met my eyes. Maybe she was seeking my help? No, she wasn't angry. Surely she did it to catch my attention. After all the time I spent on her, she can't choose someone else. That's unforgivable.

"That's right, it must be it. Because Amalia loves me."

I have to help her right away. She's probably still in trouble, waiting for my assistance. But how? The opponent is the Duke himself, and there's nothing a Marquess, let alone a third son, can do.

"That's right! My lady deceived William-sama with love!"

"Love's... power?"

It sounded like nonsense, something I'd dismiss with a laugh. Yet right now, those words seemed incredibly profound.

"This is a trial given to William-sama and my lady! So, so, no matter what you do, it will be forgiven!"

"No matter what?"

Anything?

"Of course! Please, please overcome this, okay?"

A smile reminiscent of Amalia's shook my heart. If anything I did would be forgiven, there was nothing I needed to fear.

Before I knew it, I had fled from the Marquess's residence.
