CHAPTER 24 - Princess Hoshi’s Lover
Sango trudged down the hallway.
Although she just went outside to freshen up and encountered Princess Hoshi. They ended up in an unexpected situation. Somehow, she felt like she's being hated more than ever and she's disappointed.
She hoped it wouldn't affect Miyabi's evaluation.
On top of that, the fact that she had angered Hongyu was also another source of trouble.
She let out a deep sigh, thinking that bad things would overlap.
"Ah, Sango-sama, that's good."
She met Konkon in the hallway. Apparently she was coming to ask her if she wanted to take a bath or not.
"Thank you. I'll come in."
She asked her if she needed her help to bathe, but she declined because she wanted to go in alone.
She finished her bath feeling dazed from beginning to end.
As she walked along the hallway, she get talked to.
“Um, Sango-sama, what is wrong with you?”
She was told that she wasn't feeling well.
She tried to say it was nothing, but since there was a lot going on with Princess Hoshi, there was a possibility that it would affect Sango and Konkon, as well.
“Can I come into your room for a moment?”
"Yes"
She moved from the hallway to her dark blue private room and explained what had happened.
"That kind of thing..."
“Perhaps there may be some kind of impact on Konkon as well.”
"No, no! I'm fine. I don't have any bad feelings toward Princess Hoshi to begin with!"
She told her not to worry about it. In this case, it was just bad luck. Once again, Sango was encouraged by Konkon's presence.
"Thank you, Konkon."
Sango hugged Konkon's small body.
"Ah, fuwa! No, yes..."
Suddenly, she noticed that Konkon's ears were bright red. She thought that she learned during etiquette time that in Karetsu, she shouldn't hug as a courtesy. She remembered it and tried to leave.
“Konkon, I received some sweets from the Shokubu club!!”
Reimi suddenly entered the room.
She looked at Sango and Konkon hugging each other in the room. She opened her mouth wide in surprise.
“Ah, what are you guys doing!?”
“I didn’t expect the two of you to be doing this. I can’t believe it ”
Following Konkon, Sango also hurriedly made excuses.
“Oh, that’s what you meant.”
“I met Princess Hoshi and became depressed because I had messed up a lot of things. Konkon encouraged me and I hugged her to appreciate.”
That was all that was going on in the room.
"I was surprised. I thought that both of you have a secret relationship."
"Oh, that's impossible. Absolutely!"
"Of course. All of the inner ministers and palace officials are queen's men. If their relationship with others are discovered, they would be punished."
Sango was surprised to hear that.
"Oh, Sango-sama. Didn't you hear that?"
"Y-yes..."
She knew that all the men in the inner palace were the queen's men, but she didn't know that this included herself, a woman.
"So, you're saying it's possible for someone like me to be punished?"
"Yes, of course. Well, there's probably no one else as rare as you..."
“So, isn’t it?”
Even though Sango was a woman, she was still one of Princess Hoshi's men, she asked Reimi for confirmation.
However, Reimi nodded deeply, misunderstanding that being a foreigner was what made him different.
The mutual misunderstanding was established in a perfect manner.
"Now that I think about it, I've wanted to ask you for a while, but what does it mean to be a concubine?"
Many of the ladies-in-waiting refer to her as Concubine rather than Princess Hoshi Guifei. She had always wondered.
Reimi explained.
“Consort is the word for the wife of the emperor, and it means a noble and beautiful woman. Therefore, concubine means `our noble and beautiful queen'. Our country's unique term for the harem."
"I see"
A lady-in-waiting who admired the beauty and temperament of Princess Hoshi actively called her that. Reimi carefully explained the circumstances of the inner palace.
“Then, Konkon and Reimi-san are Hime-sama to me.”
“That’s outrageous!!”
“Oh no, it’s Sango-sama!”
The two had contrasting reactions.
As she watched the situation, her depressed mood lifted a little.
The only remaining problem was Hongyu.
‘So how can I improve his mood?’
Thinking about that, she returned to her room.
The lights in the room were off. Only one small lantern was lit. The office was also dimly lit. Hongyu was probably asleep by now.
"Kuun"
"Tanuki. You're still awake, aren't you?"
"Kuun"
The raccoon dog came out of the darkness to greet its owner.
Seeing Sango, who was not as energetic as usual, it let out a sad cry.
"Let's sleep too."
"Kuun"
Sango picked up the fluffy raccoon and headed to the bedroom.
As expected, Hongyu was already asleep. He had turned his back to Sango. He usually slept on his back, so she guessed that he was still angry.
‘How did I make him so angry? I don't know.’
Sango remembered that her colleague in the knight squad, Vire, told her that he wanted to learn how to use the sword from Sango, so she did her best to teach him.
She later discovered that the reason he was training so hard to use the sword was to get back the sword given to him by the princess.
And she wasn't angry at Vire because of that.
On the contrary, she made him smile and told him that he had done his best.
At this point, Sango remembered Hongyu's age.
He was younger. She realized that if she mentored an older man and it turned out the older man was doing it out of greed, she would also be pissed.
If her older brother or senior knight were to do the same thing to her. She might not feel happy about it. She thought there were other people who could have taught her without having to rely on someone younger than her.
Finally, Sango realized the reason for Hongyu's anger.
After going to the bed and putting Tanuki down, Sango sat upright in front of Hongyu, whose back was turned to him.
Then she bowed his head.
“Hongyu, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you took the trouble to teach me."
“All I can do now is to apologize. I thought I'd make no excuses.”
In return, she told Hongyu that he would do his best to help him with his work.
She decided to forget about the treasured sword and to concentrate on his work.
There was no reply. She knew he was asleep before speaking to him.
These were the words he wanted to tell Hongyu.
After speaking, she was about to take off her jacket, which covered her whole body, she heard someone clearing his throat.
"Hongyu, are you okay?"
She quickly realized that it wasn't that kind of cough.
"Oh, are you awake?"
“Anyone would wake up if you keep talking to yourself that loudly.”
"I'm sorry"
Everything fell silent. ‘Should I just sleep like this?’ While she was thinking about that, Hongyu spoke to her.
"Are you really remorseful?"
Hongyu spoke to her with his back turned to her. He couldn't see him, but he nodded.
"I'm regretting it and I won't do it again."
"Of course. Be careful not to let something like this happen again."
"Yes, I understand"
Hongyu forgave her. She let out a breath of relief.
"I'll ask my brother about your sword next time."
"Well, that's..."
"Maybe it's an exchange of roles."
Role?
Hearing that, Sango blushed.
The Naikan and the Imperial Palace were the men of Princess Hoshi. Her role was to give birth to the emperor and empress of the era.
As a woman, Sango couldn't fulfill the role.
However, she could enter the floor.
"Can I fulfill my role?"
“If you or I don’t do our part, nothing will happen.”
Even more than Sango going to Princess Hoshi, she was shocked that Hongyu was going to Hoshi.
The inner palace was a great place.
But for some reason, she felt like she didn't like it.
‘What is this smoldering feeling in my heart?’
Sango couldn't understand. She clutched her chest tightly.
