VOLUME 2: MEETING KLAUS
Chapter 10: Escape, and then...
Damn it! It was already too late when I realized. They had targeted me. If I handed over valuables, they might be satisfied and disappear. At that moment, I recalled I had donated the ruby earrings I had hidden to the orphanage.
"Hey, girl, got some time? Come over here. I'll show you something good."
If I followed them, I would undoubtedly face a terrible situation. Pretending to crouch down, I grabbed a handful of sand.
As I stood up, I aimed at the men and threw it.
"Ugh!"
"What the hell!"
Seizing the opportunity, I fled. The way to the main street was blocked, so I had no choice but to run through the alley.
"Hey, wait!"
"You damn girl!"
The men chased after me. Surprisingly, my attempt to delay them didn't work.
Panting heavily, I never dreamt of such a situation. The precognitive dreams always showed significant events. Breaking the promise with my mother led me to this. I couldn't blame anyone but myself.
"Ah!"
Stumbling over a stone, I fell. The men quickly caught up.
"Quit struggling!"
"I won't let you off easily!"
In a last-ditch effort, I threw my hat and the basket I had. However, it didn't cause significant damage to them.
"Look at this pitiful daughter of a poor noble! She might fetch a good price at the brothel!"
How cruel these guys were! They forcefully grabbed my arm, dragging me roughly.
"Let go!"
"Shut up!"
Although I finally reached the main street, the people in the downtown area pretended not to see. They probably were notorious men, and no one wanted to get involved. As I was dragged, the man pulling my arm collided with a passing man.
"Hey, watch where you're going!"
"In front of me?"
Despite the circumstances, the passing man’s confident logic made me want to laugh. Raising my head, I was about to confirm the other person when I almost screamed. The person bumped into by the man from the downtown area was none other than Klaus von Lure Dingfelder.
Around eighteen years old now, the same age as my brother. He was younger than the one I saw in the precognitive dream, but with black hair and red eyes, there was no mistaking him.
Klaus gave a disdainful look to the man from the downtown area, as if treating him like trash or a bug. It was not the time to be absent-minded. Desperately, I appealed to him.
"Um, please help me!"
"What are you talking about!"
"Shut up!"
My cheek was slapped hard, and the taste of blood spread in my mouth. It was customary not to injure the inside of the mouth when slapping someone's face. I rolled on the ground, pretending to be more in pain than usual. Klaus warned the men.
"Hey, stop it."
"They won't listen unless you treat them like cattle!"
"I see, is that so?"
Satisfied with Klaus's understanding, I couldn't help but think of him as a devil. However, in the next moment, Klaus punched the face of the man from the downtown area.
"Ugh!"
"You, what are you doing!"
"What do you mean? Cattle won't listen unless you hit them, right?"
He punched the other man similarly. Although the men fell together amicably, they quickly got up and attacked Klaus. He single-handedly fought back, easily defeating them. Then he came towards me, looking down with an authoritative gaze.
"Hey, stand up."
At times like this, couldn't he offer a helping hand? I thought, but he was Klaus. He seemed like a heartless man. Confirming that the men from the downtown area weren't moving, I stood up.
"This place is dangerous. Go toward the central street."
"Yes."
Thinking he might even escort me to the central street, Klaus turned on his heel and left. I hastily stopped him.
"Um, thank you very much. Thanks to you, I'm saved."
"Just taught some manners to cattle."
While being treated like cattle was harsh, it strangely relieved my heart. With the strength he possessed, how much easier things would be. That wasn't the time to be contemplating such things.
"Um, may I know your name? I'd like to thank you properly!"
"...Lau."
"L-Lau?"
Was Lau his nickname? It wasn't proper to not give your full name. If he didn't introduce himself as Klaus von Lure Dingfelder here, a connection couldn't be established. Somehow, I needed to find out his name.
"Please, I'd like to at least know your name! I want to express my gratitude!"
"...Just call me Lau."
"You—"
If he was going to be like that, I would return the favor. I wouldn't tell him my full name! I thought, and provided my nickname.
"I am El."
"El?"
Clutching my skirt, I nodded.
"Lord Lau, I would be delighted to meet you again somewhere. If that happens, please allow me to repay the favor."
Without confirming Klaus's reaction, I turned away. I briskly walked away from the downtown area.
Upon returning home, I found myself in deep distress. My intention to form a solid connection with Klaus had somehow turned into a quarrelsome encounter.
Despite sharing only nicknames, we had parted ways. I should have pleaded for us to marry right there, even if I had to cling to him desperately.
Why couldn't I handle things smoothly? It was likely my inability that led me to be manipulated by Ubel, Lycobe, and Jillke in the precognitive dreams. I absolutely did not want to face the future I saw in those dreams.
Regardless of the difficulties, choosing a future I had altered with my own will, even if it meant suffering, seemed better than reaching the predicted conclusion.
In the end, my thoughts circled back to Klaus.
