Chapter 147: A Familiar Voice
With a smile, the songstress Bernadette waved to the cheering crowd as she made her way towards the stage.
Ortansia, too, found herself captivated by that familiar sight, but she snapped back to reality and checked on her father and Ducasse.
Ducasse was staring intently at Bernadette, his eyes fixed on her like a predator eyeing its prey.
The intensity of that gaze sent a chill down Ortansia’s spine.
‘Scary... Mum was right not to fall for him…’
Perhaps that man could have been Ortansia's father.
Having entertained such a thought even for a moment left Ortansia feeling thoroughly disgusted with herself.
‘But what about Father…’
She hurriedly shifted her thoughts, now observing her father's behaviour.
Father was watching Bernadette with keen interest.
‘Probably, they haven't met yet at this point, right?’
Tonight, the event where Father rescues Bernadette from Ducasse advances will occur.
That will be the catalyst for them growing close, eventually becoming lovers.
‘I will change that.’
Though it was a decision she had pondered over and over, now Ortansia began to fear that she was about to do something utterly reckless.
...There was still time to turn back.
‘...What am I being so weak for?! If I don't stop what happens today, Father will incur Ducasse' hatred!’
Once that happens, it will be too late.
That insidious man will stop at nothing to kill Father, no matter how much time passes or what methods he employs.
‘If I don't eliminate the root cause here, no amount of struggle in the future will matter’
Clenching her trembling hands tightly, Ortansia repeated this to herself over and over.
Downstairs, Bernadette had just reached the stage and bowed cheerfully.
The hall fell silent, all eyes drawn to the songstress.
Bernadette showed no sign of being intimidated by the situation, beginning to sing with grace.
‘It's Mama’s song…’
It was the same beautiful, clear voice Ortansia remembered.
‘It brings back memories, Mother…’
On nights when Ortensia couldn't sleep, her mother would invariably sing to her.
“Sorry, I don't know many lullabies”, she'd laugh, yet she sang to her all sorts of songs.
Sweet love songs favoured in taverns, songs sailors and merchants sang to lift their spirits, foreign tunes she claimed to have learnt from travelling troupes long ago...
The many songs her mother shared live on in Ortansia's memory.
But hearing a genuine singing voice like this after so long fills her heart with nostalgia.
[ Sia's mother is amazing ]
“Yes. She is.”
Ortensia felt happy at the quiet remark from Tyrol.
Ortensia adored her mother.
Though she passed away when Ortansia was still young, she left behind so many precious things.
And those things continue to support Ortansia to this day.
Bernadette's songs continued, one after another.
Ortansia, too, was enchanted by that nostalgic voice, listening in rapt attention.
Eventually, the final song ended. As she took a bow, the floor erupted in applause and cheers.
‘The moment is at last upon us...!’
Afterwards, the songstress would make her rounds, mingling with guests at each table.
If Ducasse were to make his move, it would be then.
‘Ducas's table is over there…’
His gaze, as ever, seemed to follow Bernadette relentlessly.
“Bernadette, you were absolutely splendid again today!”
“The finest singer in the kingdom!”
“Hehee, thank you.”
Bernadette responded graciously to the guests offering their praise.
Some attempted to make advances, but she sidestepped them with remarkable ease.
‘Wow, Mum really is remarkable... I'm learning a lot here.’
As Ortansia watched with admiration, Bernadette finally approached the table where Ducasse sat.
“Mr. Lemaire, you've come again! Oh, Maurice, how's work going? And Adolf is here too! I saw his wife at the market the other day.”
She greeted each familiar customer, offering her charming smile.
It wasn't just her singing voice and appearance that made her beloved by all; this kind of steady, down-to-earth interaction was surely a major factor too.
Though perhaps that very reason was why she'd caught the eye of troublesome types like Ducasse...
“Bernadette.”
Ducasse called out impatiently, and Bernadette's body stiffened for an instant.
Ortansia, who had been watching the whole time, understood immediately.
It was unusual for her, who was usually so free-spirited... She was tense.
“Well, well, Mr Ducasse! How lovely to see you!”
Yet showing not a trace of such unease, Bernadette turned towards Ducasse with an alluring smile.
Judging by her demeanour, this couldn't be their first meeting.
“How did you find tonight's performance? Did you enjoy it?”
“Ah, very much. ...Though I would rather like to enjoy the rest of the evening in private.”
Ducasse drew Bernadette closer, his arm around her waist.
“Now, now, what a charming invitation, but I'm afraid I must decline. I'm not accepting any encore tonight.”
Bernadette gently tried to slip out of Ducasse's embrace, but he only pulled her closer.
“How long do you intend to tease me like this? Enough of this game.”
“Oh dear, isn't that part of the fun?”
“...Enough, Bernadette. Do you have any idea who I am?”
Ducasse's voice became even lower, and the atmosphere in the room grew palpably tense.
