130 A Future of Despair.
“If you change your mind about what we discussed earlier, do let me know. I'll be waiting anytime.”
“Huh!?”
“Ahaha, just kidding, just kidding. Well then, have a good night!”
Waving his hand flutteringly, Victor departed.
She had been teased. Even knowing that, her heart pounded like a drum.
Ortansia touched her cheek with her hand, trying to calm her agitation.
The spot she gently touched was indeed warmer than usual.
"Honestly, Prince Victor... Hey, big broth—!?"
As Ortansia tried to speak to Gérard, she saw his expression and her eyes widened in shock.
Gérard was glaring at Victor's back with a face so terrifying it could freeze anyone who met his gaze.
Even though this was supposed to be the glittering great hall of the court, the illusion of a blizzard swirling around him was vivid enough to see.
"...Perhaps I should have eliminated him after all."
"Big Brother!? What do you mean, 'eliminated'!?”
Ortansia panicked at the ominous muttering.
No, surely it was something trivial, like forgetting to extinguish the lamp in his chamber.
She couldn't imagine Gérard making such a careless mistake, but she desperately wanted to believe it was nothing more than that.
“Big Brother! I'm terribly thirsty!”
“...Very well. Wait here.”
Ortansia blurted out, trying desperately to distract Gérard.
Then Gérard shifted his gaze from Victor's back to Ortensia, startled.
In an instant, the terrifying aura surrounding Gérard receded, and Ortensia breathed a sigh of relief.
‘Phew, thank goodness…’
Though she prided herself on understanding Gerard far better since time had rewound, there remained much she still couldn't grasp.
The goddess Auriela had gently said something along the lines of “Please continue to keep an eye on Gerard,” so for now, whenever Victor and Gerard had a chance to meet, Ortansia must try to be present whenever possible.
‘I want to know so much more about Big Brother’
More than anyone else, she wants him to be happy.
Because she wants to share every emotion with him, sorrow and joy alike.
As she was deep in her thoughts, a glass was suddenly handed to her.
“Drink.”
“Thank you, Big Brother! By the way, what is this”
“Cranberry juice.”
“Mph! Do you think I can't handle alcohol?”
“We wouldn't want you staggering and falling again. Do you wish to be carried from here to the carriage without putting your feet on the ground?”
“...This juice is delicious.”
Imagining herself being carried, held in Gerard's arms, in public, Ortansia looked down in disbelief.
Victor's words earlier had been a joke, but Gerard's words now were no joke.
If Ortansia drank alcohol, she would undoubtedly end up being carried like a child in front of everyone.
The “Saint of the Nation” would look utterly ridiculous.
Watching Ortansia obediently sip her cranberry juice, Gerard looked somewhat satisfied.

"Listen, Pamela! This dress that you arranged based on your ideas was a big hit! Janet's eyes were sparkling as she said, 'This is certain to be the next trend!'—"
"Hehe, it's because you're so charming, my lady, that any dress looks wonderful on you. Now, you must be tired today, right? Please get some rest."
"Yes, good night."
Having safely finished the ball and returned to the manor, she bid Pamela good night.
The moment she lay down on the bed, drowsiness washed over her.
‘My first ball in awhile... I'm tired, but it was fun.’
It had been good to see Victor looking so energetic, and above all, she could truly feel that she no longer had to fear the demon Lord or the cult.
With a fluffy, happy feeling, Ortansia drifted off into the depths of sleep.
‘...Mm, huh?’
How long had she been here?
Before she knew it, Ortansia was standing outside.
There were many people around her.
They were all uniformly dressed in black attire.
‘What's this... It looks like a funeral.’
She felt an unpleasant premonition slowly creeping up from her feet.
Her body wouldn't obey her, and her feet moved forward against Ortansia's will.
Ahead of her, a single coffin had been placed.
‘No, I don't want to see!’
Despite thinking this, her feet wouldn't stop.
And finally, the moment came to face the person in the coffin.
And there, lying within, was…
‘...!’
Ortansia let out a soundless scream.
Because this was a lie. This couldn't be…
‘Father...!’
Surrounded by countless flowers, sleeping in the coffin was Ortansia's father, Duke Verité.
...She recognised this scene.
It was a memory from her first life, when her father had died.
‘This is just a dream! When I wake up, it'll all be false! I'm only seeing memories from the past!’
After all, the demon Lord was gone. Fate should have changed.
There was no way her father, who was currently in good health could have died
"Lady Ortansia."
Called from behind, Ortansia slowly turned round.

Standing there were Emily and Janet, Ortansia's friends.
"To think the Duke would... Please accept our deepest condolences."
"If there's anything at all we can do, please don't hesitate to tell us, Lady Ortansia! We'll always be on your side!"
Firmly grasping Ortansia's hands, the two said this to her.
Little did they know that those words would plunge Ortansia into despair.
‘This doesn't make any sense’
This should be a memory from her first life.
It shouldn't have any bearing on Ortansia's current life at all.
‘In my first life, I wasn't friends with Janet and Emily’
Even at her father's funeral, the two hadn't approached her like this.
Which meant this wasn't simply her reliving memories from her first life…
‘Could this be... a possible future that's yet to come...!?’
Ortansia couldn't say a word. She felt like the ground was crumbling beneath her feet.
Chapter 131
“Haaah...!”
She bolt upright, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
She was drenched in sweat, soaked through to the point she could feel it.
Looking out the window through the curtains, it was dark and it seemed like dawn hadn't dawned yet.
“it was a dream...”
Trembling as she hugged herself, Ortansia replayed the dream she'd just seen. It was a dream about her father's funeral.
It felt close to the events from her first life, yet parts like Janet and Emily calling out to her could only happen in this life.
‘...It was just a dream, right?’
Perhaps memories from the past and present had become jumbled, causing her to have such a nightmare.
‘Yes, that must be it.’
She pacified herself with this and lay back down.
But until Pamela came to wake her in the morning, she couldn't sleep a wink and could only tremble.
“Good morning, Ortansia. It's a lovely morning.”
Her father, whom she met in the dining hall, greeted her as always.
Seeing his smile, Ortansia felt such relief she almost cried.
“Good morning, Father...”
“Oh dear, you don't look well. Is something wrong?”
“No, I just couldn't sleep...”
Apparently, her low spirits showed on her face.
When she glossed over the nightmare and made excuses, her father's expression grew slightly concerned.
"If you have any problems, feel free to consult a doctor. Of course, I'm always available to listen to you. And…"
His gaze shifted behind Ortansia.
Ortansia was drawn to the scene, she gasped in shock.
“Big Brother!?”
Before she knew it, Gérard was standing directly behind her, looking down at them.
Ortansia, who was completely unaware of his presence, broke out in a cold sweat.
“G-good morning, Brother...”
“Huh? ...Whoa!”
Gérard fixed a probing gaze upon them.
Though she had nothing to hide, his gaze made her uncomfortable, and as she stiffened...
“Let's go.”
“Huh? ...Whoa!” Just like he did previously, he suddenly scooped her up, and once again, Ortensia let out a startled cry.
Gérard carried her out of the dining hall and strode purposefully forward.
“Brother!? Breakfast is over there!?”
“Breakfast can be brought up later, so there’s no problem.” The Duke’s voice followed from behind, leaving Ortansia utterly flustered.
She had no idea what her brother was thinking or where he was taking her, but somehow, Father seemed to understand.
“Um, where are we going...”
“The infirmary.”
“Huh?”

Gerard gave Ortansia, who looked utterly bewildered, a sharp, piercing stare.
“Don't you realize you look like you could collapse any second?”
“…”
Ortansia gasped and pressed her hand to her cheek.
Father had also said she looked “unwell,” but was it really that obvious?
“...It's just lack of sleep. I'm fine.”
“If it's lack of sleep, we need to identify the cause and take immediate action.”
“Ugh...”
She couldn't help but think it was a bit exaggerated, but she understood perfectly well how excessively worried Gerard usually was about her.
So, Hortensia embraced Gérard tightly, full of gratitude."
"Thank you very much, elder brother."
"...Hmph."
After Gerard carried her into the infirmary, a simple examination awaited her.
When she vaguely explained she'd “had a scary dream,” the doctor didn't press further.
He probably assumed it was a nightmare related to the Demon Lord.
“Apologies for the wait, Young Miss!”
Pamela soon arrived pushing the breakfast cart.
The cart held a lavish breakfast far too large for Ortansia to finish alone.
“It's important to nourish yourself when you're unwell! Come on!!”
“Now, now, Pamela. It's not good to force a patient to eat.”
“But Doctor, I want the young lady to get well soon!”
Watching Pamela being admonished by the doctor, Ortensia chuckled softly.
...Everyone was worried about her.
She felt both apologetic and happy about that.
As her mood lifted, it seemed silly how much she'd been frightened by what was just a dream.
‘Yeah, it was just a dream. I have to pull myself together so I don't worry everyone!’
Whilst she forced breakfast down into her stomach, and consequently made herself ill again because of it, that dream gradually faded from Ortansia’s mind.
