Chapter 37
Gu Han no longer looked at Rong Ling. She looked toward Consort Shu in the hall. Since entering the palace, this was the first time Gu Han had seen Consort Shu in such a state. She'd sent someone to summon His Majesty not to seek justice, but to seek protection.
Unfortunately.
Gu Han imperceptibly glanced at His Majesty. According to her initial speculation, Consort Shu would likely be disappointed today.
Sure enough, Consort Shu's pleading for Ali made the Empress Dowager's expression grow even colder:
"This palace cannot keep a beast that harms people."
Lu Yu, under Consort Shu's expectant gaze, calmly nodded. "Mother Empress is right."
The Empress Dowager fingered her prayer beads. That cat called Ali kept its life but couldn't possibly continue staying in the palace. The civet cat was forcibly held in a palace servant's arms. Perhaps sensing danger, it struggled to jump out, crying out miserably several times in Consort Shu's direction.
Consort Shu was held back by Yaluo. Her nail guards pressed against the ground nearly broke. She watched helplessly as Ali was carried away. The moment tears were about to fall, she fiercely closed her eyes.
Gu Han glanced at Consort Shu's tense body and imperceptibly furrowed her delicate brows, vaguely sensing something amiss. Ordinary people raising cats only treated them as pets, they'd invest emotion, yet not to the extent Consort Shu did, as if treating the cat like a child.
Lu Yu on his seat had somehow risen, walked before Consort Shu, and helped her up before looking up at the Empress Dowager:
"Mother Empress, since the matter is concluded, your son will take Consort Shu and leave first."
Consort Shu collapsed against his shoulder, seemingly deeply grieved, tightly clutching his sleeve. Gu Han could still hear Consort Shu's suppressed sobs.
The Empress Dowager frowned.
But Lu Yu held the person in his embrace, his protective stance very obvious. Out of sight, out of mind, the Empress Dowager waved her hand dismissively.
Lu Yu didn't even enter the hall to check on Zhou Měirén once.
The hall full of consorts watched exceptionally quietly as His Majesty left with his favored consort. Clearly it was Consort Shu who had erred, yet she only shed a few tears and gained more of His Majesty's pity than the injured person.
Gu Han also only stood quietly among the crowd watching.
After a long while, the Empress Dowager raised her hand to pinch the bridge of her nose, some weariness seeming to color her voice: "You may all return."
As the words fell, she was helped into the inner chamber by Matron Wu.
When Gu Han stepped out of Changning Courtyard, she couldn't help feeling somewhat wistful. But immediately after, she raised Consort Shu's position considerably in her mind.
Before entering the palace, she'd heard Consort Shu was favored but never had a concrete sense of it. After entering the palace, Gu Han had been quite favored herself, even with half the time spent recovering from injuries, Consort Shu only gave her the feeling of attending bed somewhat more frequently than others.
When she had first entered the palace, Consort Shu had lowered her head to the Empress over the bed tag matter. These newly entered consorts inevitably looked down on Consort Shu somewhat.
Until today, Gu Han finally understood why others mentioned Consort Shu with expressions of admiration and envy.
Consort Shu's favor didn't lie in her frequency of attending bed, but in His Majesty's willingness to protect her. Even with today's major incident involving the Empress Dowager herself, Consort Shu still emerged completely unscathed.
For imperial consorts, losing a cat truly wasn't a loss at all.
After returning to Changchun Pavilion, Gu Han collapsed onto the soft couch. She rarely felt somewhat tired. Jiu si came in saying:
"The Imperial Kitchen has delivered the evening meal."
Gu Han drooped her eyes listlessly. "Set it in the outer hall."
Jiusi was surprised and looked at Jiunian, using her eyes to inquire. Jiu nian only shook her head.
The evening meal included a dish of braised pork with honey dates, but Gu Han had no appetite whatsoever. She frowned, thinking of Zhou Měirén's face before cleaning, blood dripping between her fingers.
Gu Han suddenly raised her hand to cover her face.
She'd overestimated herself. She thought she didn't care, but after personally witnessing that scene, at least for the next few days, she didn't want to see the color red or eat meat.
---
The next day, Changchun Pavilion received rewards from Cining Palace, a dazzling pile, all precious.
Gu Han's heart immediately sank with a thud.
After recording all these items in the registry, Gu Han pressed her temples with quite a headache. She'd indeed wanted to leave a good impression on the Empress Dowager, yes, but she didn't want to be bound together with Zhou Měirén.
Gu Han knew the Empress Dowager's own niece was Zhou Měirén alone.
Gu Han wasn't surprised by the Empress Dowager's regard for Zhou Měirén. Today, the Empress Dowager's rewards had already revealed some discreet meaning. Even if she was unwilling, in others' eyes, they'd all think she and Zhou Měirén were on good terms.
In this harem, the words "good terms" represented too many meanings.
If she didn't want to offend the Empress Dowager, she couldn't distance herself from Zhou Měirén. Gu Han rubbed her temples, recalling Consort Shu's appearance yesterday, pressing her lips together somewhat irritably.
Jiu nian keenly sensed her mistress's mood seemed poor. She dismissed the other palace servants and asked in a low voice:
"Master, is there something wrong with these things?"
Gu Han shook her head helplessly. "Nothing's wrong."
The person who delivered the rewards also had no problems. What was problematic was the timing of sending the rewards, as if reminding everyone in the harem what Gu Han had done yesterday.
Gu Han wasn't an ungrateful person. Even though she felt irritated, she also clearly understood that gaining the Empress Dowager's regard in this harem was an incredibly good thing. The Empress Dowager's words, even His Majesty couldn't take lightly.
---
Kunning Palace.
The Empress had learned early on about Changchun Pavilion receiving rewards. She only raised her eyebrows slightly and said unhurriedly:
"It seems our Concubine Gu has quite won Mother Empress's heart."
Muqiu was carefully removing her nail guards. Hearing this, she only said: "Yesterday Concubine Gu helped Zhou Měirén. Given the Empress Dowager's regard for Zhou Měirén, today's rewards are quite normal."
Muqiu's impression of Concubine Gu wasn't very good. Concubine Gu had risen too quickly along the way, making Muqiu feel somewhat uneasy. She said in a low voice:
"This servant rather feels Concubine Gu is too skilled at maneuvering."
Would others not know that helping Zhou Měirén might leave an impression with the Empress Dowager?
Many knew, but few dared to do it.
Yet Concubine Gu dared to think and dared to act, even making decisions so swiftly it was surprising. Was she truly not afraid at all?
As for whether Concubine Gu perhaps truly wanted to help Zhou Měirén, Muqiu didn't even consider this possibility. Did anyone in this palace act without purpose?
The Empress looked at the person in the bronze mirror and curved her lips in a smile:
"If she truly has the capability, that wouldn't be a bad thing either."
Muqiu's lips moved, but in the end, she said nothing.
Her Majesty had waited too long for someone who could suppress Consort Shu. Yesterday in that situation, Consort Shu could still retreat completely unscathed, how could Her Majesty not have reservations in her heart?
When only one person in the harem held supreme favor, it would oppress others until they couldn't breathe.
Thinking of this, Muqiu's resistance toward Concubine Gu lessened somewhat. Having entered this harem, how many could control their own fate?
At least at this stage, the higher Concubine Gu climbed, the more advantageous it was for them.
After a long while, Muqiu sighed quietly: "This servant ultimately doesn't think as far ahead as Your Majesty."
---
Approaching year's end,
Gu Han finally finished making the outfit she'd measured for His Majesty while recovering from her injuries. The moment she set down her needle and thread, she couldn't help rubbing her wrist. When at home she'd been pampered, she'd learned needlework well but rarely exerted herself to actually make a complete garment.
Finding an exquisite brocade box, she put away the outfit and had someone deliver it to the Emperor's Palace.
Changchun Pavilion was only a side hall and had no heated floors. Charcoal basins burned in the hall. Gu Han was quite favored, so Zhongsheng Hall wouldn't be perfunctory, even with several basins of charcoal fire lit, the hall still had no smoky smell.
Little Fangzi held the brocade box, somewhat hesitant:
"Why doesn't Master personally deliver it to His Majesty?"
As he spoke, Gu Han happened to push open the latticed window. A cold wind blew in. Gu Han shivered. This year the capital had seen several snowfalls. At first, Gu Han still had the mood to appreciate the snow. Now, she only wanted to huddle in the hall and go nowhere.
She recalled that when His Majesty came a few days ago, he had asked when she would finish making the outfit. She curved her lips slightly.
The one who told her not to stare at needlework daily was him. The one urging her to hurry and finish the outfit was also him.
Gu Han looked at the small path the palace servants had swept in the courtyard and refused with a shake of her head, perfunctorily dismissing Little Fangzi:
"You making one trip is enough."
Winter was cold. His Majesty also wasn't pleased to run to the harem. But compared to others, in a month she could always gain a few days of favor. Why eagerly suffer this hardship?
Seeing his mistress truly unwilling to move, Little Fangzi could only make this trip himself.
His Majesty was currently at Yangxin Hall. Little Fangzi ran over braving the cold wind, frozen until his whole body trembled. He stomped his feet. Holding the brocade box in his hands, his fingers were frozen red, but he couldn't even breathe warm air on them.
Liu An saw his appearance and laughed:
"What did you come for?"
Speaking thus, Liu An curiously looked at the brocade box he held, finding it novel. People from Changchun Pavilion never ran to the imperial presence. This was the first time. He wondered what that Concubine Gu wanted to do?
Little Fangzi was so cold he drew sharp breaths, smiling ingratiatingly:
"This is an outfit Master made for His Majesty. That day His Majesty urged her once, so Master worked continuously to finish it and had this servant deliver it. Eunuch, could you receive it?"
His words were always tactful, between the lines all saying how much Concubine Gu valued His Majesty's words. Hearing this, Liu An looked at him with amusement.
Liu An shook his head and had someone receive the brocade box, also not letting Little Fangzi leave:
"Wait here. I'll go in to report to His Majesty."
Little Fangzi finally freed his hands. He breathed warm air on them, rubbed them before tucking them into his sleeves, smiling and nodding at Liu An while retreating to a sheltered spot in the corridor.
Liu An pushed the door into the hall.
Yangxin Hall had heated floors, not cold at all. Lu Yu heard the sound and looked up. Seeing the brocade box in Liu An's hands, he raised an eyebrow:
"What are you holding?"
Liu An quickly opened the brocade box. "It's an outfit Concubine Gu had someone deliver."
The moment the box opened, Lu Yu could see the outfit inside clearly. Dark blue-green, embroidered with auspicious cloud patterns, a golden dragon seemingly appearing and disappearing. The stitches were fine and dense, one could tell the person making the outfit had expended great effort.
Lu Yu suddenly recalled that day when he had asked the woman, when she had shaken her head guiltily saying it wasn't finished yet. He couldn't help curving a smile. Setting down his brush, he leaned back and asked:
"Where is she? Didn't she come?"
If Liu An didn't know whom His Majesty was asking about, he needn't serve at the imperial presence. He shook his head. "Concubine Gu herself didn't come. It was Little Fangzi from Changchun Pavilion who delivered it."
Lu Yu nodded casually. "Has the person left?"
"This servant had him wait outside."
As soon as the words fell, the sound of cold wind striking the latticed window, creating muffled sounds, could be heard. Lu Yu suddenly gave a snort: "I now know why she didn't come personally."
Liu An smiled awkwardly. In this kind of weather, if one could hide lazily in the hall, who'd be willing to run out?
Lu Yu didn't care about such things. The more Gu Han didn't want to come, the more he wanted to see her now. He raised his hand and pointed at Liu An:
"You make a trip and have your Concubine Gu carried over."
When Liu An exited Yangxin Hall, his expression was still peculiar. He'd heard His Majesty have him invite people over, but this was the first time he'd heard him have someone carried over.
Little Fangzi didn't know what had happened inside. He was still craning his neck asking:
"Eunuch, did His Majesty say anything? Can this servant return now?"
Liu An also wore a friendly expression toward him. "You can. I'll walk with you."
Little Fangzi was stunned, then saw Liu An select a few people and, carrying a procession, follow him toward Changchun Pavilion. Little Fangzi led the way completely bewildered.
One incense stick's time later, upon reaching Changchun Pavilion, Little Fangzi entered the hall first. He rushed in. As the curtain was lifted, warmth decreased by more than half, and some cold wind came in with him. Gu Han pulled her fur blanket closer and looked up in puzzlement:
"What happened?"
Gu Han had Jiu si pour Little Fangzi a cup of hot tea. Little Fangzi held it in his hands but had no time to drink, hurriedly saying: "Master, Eunuch Liu has also come!"
Gu Han was somewhat surprised but not flustered, only saying warmly:
"If he's come, he's come. Why are you panicking? Just invite him in."
Little Fangzi patted his forehead and finally spoke clearly: "No! Eunuch Liu also had people bring a procession. This servant saw, he's requesting Master to go over!"
These words struck Gu Han somewhat dazed. Her almond eyes widened. Just then Liu An was also invited in and explained his purpose:
"His Majesty sent this servant to invite Concubine Gu to the Emperor's Palace."
Gu Han was rarely flustered, but at this moment, she turned to look at the bronze mirror. Reflected in the mirror was a woman with dark hair disheveled over her shoulders, wearing only a very simple, elegant long dress, wrapped in a fur blanket. In this appearance, how could she possibly go out?
Gu Han rarely blushed with embarrassment. She said in a delicate voice: "Please wait a moment, Eunuch."
Changchun Pavilion immediately became busy. During this time, Gu Han didn't forget to have someone pour hot tea for Eunuch Liu and the others. They all quickly bowed and withdrew outside to wait. There was no time to change clothes. Gu Han could only have someone arrange her dark hair while she drew her own delicate brows.
She'd been well-nourished recently, her cheeks showed pink through white. Even without applying powder, she had excellent color. Gathering her dark hair and adding a jade hairpin, Gu Han didn't dare delay. Without even changing her dress, she threw on a fox fur cloak and went out.
Upon reaching outside the hall, Gu Han realized Little Fangzi hadn't exaggerated. Liu An had truly brought a procession.
Liu An cupped his hands. "Concubine Gu, please. We mustn't keep His Majesty waiting long."
The procession was carried very steadily. Cold wind whistled. By rights, in this kind of weather no one would want to go out. The Imperial Garden, no matter how beautiful, after half a year in the palace, one would be thoroughly sick of it. Yet oddly, nearing the Imperial Garden, Gu Han heard some commotion.
Gu Han lifted a corner of the embroidered curtain and saw several imperial consorts together in the Imperial Garden, looking this way from afar. The distance was somewhat far, Gu Han couldn't see clearly who those people were. As for why they appeared here, she had no interest. She lowered the curtain.
In the distance, Bǎolín Song watched the procession leave from afar. Withdrawing her gaze, she looked at the somewhat distracted Bǎolín Rong. She covered her lips and laughed:
"People truly can't be compared. Some stay nicely in their palaces, yet His Majesty sends people to invite them over. Others brave the cold wind waiting eagerly but can't wait for His Majesty."
Bǎolín Rong's appearance wasn't outstanding in the palace, but she knew how to adorn herself well. Today she wore a light green palace dress, her jacket lined with fur, draped in a purple cloak. Her dark hair was arranged at an angle, adding several traces of delicate frailty.
She watched the procession move far away until it could no longer be seen before withdrawing her gaze. She heard Bǎolín Song's words. Her eyelashes trembled lightly as she lowered her eyes, saying softly:
"Is Bǎolín Song talking about herself?"
Bǎolín Rong had been coming to this Imperial Garden frequently recently. After Bǎolín Song learned of it, she also came daily. She waited eagerly for His Majesty, didn't Bǎolín Song do the same?
Bǎolín Song's expression immediately changed, becoming angry from embarrassment:
"What are you so smug about? Why don't you look, since Concubine Gu's return, has His Majesty even remembered you? If not for Concubine Gu, you'd probably be even worse off than me!"
A gust of wind suddenly came through the cold day, disheveling the hair at Bǎolín Song's temple. She nearly fell to the ground. She looked at Bǎolín Rong in disbelief:
"You dare hit me?"
Bǎolín Rong seemed very surprised. She furrowed her delicate brows lightly. "What is Bǎolín Song saying? The wind blew a flower branch that struck Bǎolín Song. It has nothing to do with me."
A plum blossom lay wind-tossed on the ground. Just hearing the wind, one knew it was very strong. Bǎolín Song's temple throbbed with pain. Bǎolín Rong truly hadn't struck her with her hand, but this plum branch had been held in Bǎolín Rong's hand all along. If Bǎolín Rong claimed it wasn't intentional, Bǎolín Song absolutely didn't believe it!
Bǎolín Rong looked up once more toward Yangxin Hall's direction. The expression in her eyes was obscure and difficult to read. She knew, today she wouldn't obtain what she wanted. So she no longer lingered. Before leaving, she didn't even glance at Bǎolín Song.
Bǎolín Song targeted her at every turn, yet Bǎolín Song was even worse off than her.
Bǎolín Song watched her retreating figure, grinding her teeth and spitting hatefully: "What trash!"
Recalling Bǎolín Rong's performance just now, she gave a cold laugh, her voice full of sarcasm:
"Wanting to imitate as a substitute, doesn't even look to see if the original is present or not. Dongshi imitating Xishi!"
The maid beside her, whether from cold or fear, shrank her head. "Master, let's also return."
---
Gu Han was completely unaware of what had happened in the Imperial Garden. The procession arrived at Yangxin Hall. Just as Gu Han descended, she couldn't help shivering. Liu An had already pushed open the hall door. Gu Han quickly walked two steps faster. Upon entering the hall, she finally felt somewhat better.
And the person who had put her through this trouble was reclining against a soft couch. The hall had heated floors. With one hand holding a book and the other tea and snacks, how comfortable could he be?
Hearing the sound, Lu Yu looked up. He happened to see Gu Han removing her cloak. She was dressed simply, a loose long dress that precisely displayed her slender waist. Even her sideways movement of handing the cloak to a servant allowed Lu Yu to see her exquisite, graceful figure.
Lu Yu couldn't help closing his eyes.
He inwardly cursed the servants attending the Yangxin Hall.
The heated floors in this hall were burning too hot.
The woman's gentle voice carried a trace of complaint: "Where has this consort displeased Your Majesty? Why torment this consort for no reason?"
Lu Yu pulled at the corner of his lips, only feeling she didn't know her own fortune.
Treatment others begged for but couldn't obtain, from her, it actually drew complaints?
Lu Yu extended his hand. Gu Han raised her hand to place it upon his. Borrowing Lu Yu's strength, Gu Han ascended the steps. The next moment, she fell into Lu Yu's embrace. Before she could recover her senses, she heard a cold snort.
Right at her ear, Gu Han suddenly felt her earlobe somewhat itchy, and even the skin at her neck felt slightly uncomfortable.
She shifted her body slightly, seeking a more comfortable position in His Majesty's embrace. One hand rested on His Majesty's shoulder, her fingers touching His Majesty's neck. She personally witnessed His Majesty shiver suddenly from the cold. Only then did her heart feel satisfied. Before His Majesty could frown, Gu Han lowered her eyes and said softly:
"Your Majesty, this consort's hands are so cold."
Lu Yu knew full well she did it intentionally, but when grasping the woman's hand, the icy touch transmitted, that bit of annoyance in his heart also dissipated. Lu Yu furrowed his brows. "Why didn't you bring a hand warmer?"
Gu Han nuzzled against his neck, her voice soft and coquettish: "Too heavy. This consort didn't want to carry it."
Gu Han calculated, His Majesty entered the harem infrequently in winter. It had also been some time since she had attended bed. Perhaps because the hall had heated floors, Gu Han's languid feeling faded considerably. From the corner of her eye, she noticed the palace servants in the hall had withdrawn at some point.
She blinked her eyes and gently tugged at His Majesty's sleeve. She lowered her eyes demurely and called out: "Your Majesty."
Lu Yu's movements paused. He lowered his eyelids to look at the woman.
The woman lay obediently and compliantly in his embrace, an appearance of yielding to his whims. Even the hand tugging his sleeve had somehow found its way to his belt. Lu Yu glanced at the water clock, there were still some hours until evening.
His hand encircled the woman's waist as he still pretended to ask:
"Have you eaten your midday meal?"
Gu Han's breathing tightened. Her cheeks flushed rosy with embarrassment. She naturally heard the teasing in His Majesty's words. He was deliberately reminding her, it was still daytime, not long after noon had passed.
Gu Han bit her lip and shot him a coquettish glare, unwillingly turning over. Though still in his embrace, she faced away from him.
Lu Yu had long discovered that this woman was usually gentle, but in matters of the bed, her temper was terrible.
The slightest thing not to her liking and she'd turn her back on him. But she made a fuss with propriety, so Lu Yu couldn't get angry either.
Just like now, Lu Yu could only hold the woman's waist, turn her around, and coax in a low, displeased voice:
"Where has your mind gone now? I was only afraid you'd be hungry, so I asked. If you don't want to hear it, I won't say it."
Speaking thus, Lu Yu lowered his head to kiss the woman's forehead. Gu Han opened her almond eyes wide, humming softly and pliantly. Her hands clutched his lapels as she tilted her fair neck slightly to receive it. Lu Yu's eyes darkened. While coaxing her in a low voice, he bent down.
Outside Yangxin Hall, Liu An heard the sounds from within and considered it in his heart. Exchanging glances with Little Fangzi, they smiled at each other politely, both lowering their heads. Seeing Little Fangzi so composed, Liu An touched his nose. In broad daylight, the people of Changchun Pavilion from top to bottom were truly remarkable.
Just then, Liu An saw someone approaching from not far away. His expression changed. He quickly intercepted the person before they could get close.
Jiachun was forced to stop. She smiled at Liu An:
"Eunuch Liu, this servant comes on Her Ladyship's orders. Please announce me."
Liu An thought inwardly, he wasn't so tired of living that he'd announce her at this moment. He smiled and dismissed her:
"My apologies. His Majesty is not seeing anyone right now."
The smile on Jiachun's face faded. Her Ladyship had the First Prince at her knee. The Emperor's Palace rarely blocked their people. His Majesty hadn't visited Xianleng Palace for some time. Jiachun said:
"Today is Her Ladyship's birthday. Her Ladyship had the First Prince brought to the palace and sent this servant to ask, does His Majesty have time to visit Xianleng Palace today? Can Eunuch truly not announce this servant?"
Liu An wiped nonexistent sweat from his forehead. "Miss Jiachun, I will report this matter to His Majesty shortly. But right now, His Majesty truly is not seeing anyone."
Hearing this, Jiachun knew that even bringing out the First Prince, with Liu An blocking, she wouldn't see His Majesty today.
Before leaving, Jiachun glanced at Yangxin Hall's corridor. Whether it was her imagination or not, the palace servants guarding outside the hall today seemed somewhat numerous. And somewhat familiar.
Not until leaving Yangxin Hall and nearly returning to Xianleng Palace did Jiachun suddenly realize why those palace servants seemed familiar.
Why would Changchun Pavilion's palace servants be at Yangxin Hall?
So Eunuch Liu blocked her because Concubine Gu was inside the hall?
Jiachun furrowed her brows and quickened her pace back to the palace.
Liu An had no idea what Jiachun was thinking. His Majesty summoning Concubine Gu to Yangxin Hall wasn't a secret to begin with. He'd never intended to keep it from anyone.
After who knows how long, the sounds within the hall finally ceased.
Six-panel screens concealed a chamber's spring colors. Lu Yu held the perspiring woman, lowering his head to rest against her neck. He did nothing, only pressing very lightly. Gu Han, utterly exhausted, collapsed in his embrace. Because of this movement, she felt her body soften even more.
After a long while, Liu An's voice sounded outside the hall. Gu Han's reason finally returned. Realizing what she had done, in an instant she flushed red with embarrassment, hiding herself behind Lu Yu like a quail.
