As we enter this Lenten season, may this be a time of reflection, renewal, and quiet strength. May our hearts grow softer, our faith deeper, and our hope stronger as we journey toward Easter.
175: Two Geralds
Gérard emerged from the rift, his gaze fixed straight upon Ortansia .
He crossed directly to where she lay and gently lifted her from the floor, cradling her in his arms.
Then, as though making a solemn vow, he said:
"I've come for you, just as I promised."
Those words, and the way he looked at her, made it unmistakably clear.
This was the Gérard who had spent so much time with her... undoubtedly her *brother* Gérard.
*..."There's no point fretting over an uncertain future. Besides, wherever you might disappear to..."*
*..."I will come for you. Always."*
The conversation they had shared just before she changed fate came flooding back to her.
...Just as he had promised then, Gérard had come all this way to find her.
"Brother, brother...!"
A torrent of emotions surged from deep within her chest, and Ortansia clung to Gérard, tears streaming down her face.
He held her gently, his arms wrapped round her back, and whispered softly:
"Let's go home, Sia."
Gérard would never know just how much joy those words brought her.
Ever since fate had changed and she had arrived in this world, she had felt as though there was a gaping hole somewhere in her heart.
The thought that she no longer had a home to return to, that she had erased it with her own hands, had been unbearably sad.
But Gérard had come for her.
He had shown her that there was still a place they could return to together.
Just that... it felt as though everything inside her had been made whole again.
Gérard reached to lift Ortansia as she nodded again and again through her tears.
But just as he did, a voice rang out to stop him.
"Wait...!"
It was, unmistakably, Gérard's voice.
Not the Gérard who was holding Ortansia now, but the voice of this world's Gérard, the one who wasn't her brother.
"...!"
Ortansia spun round as though struck, just in time to see this world's Gérard stagger to his feet.
"Who the devil are you...? What do you intend to do with Ortansia ...?!"
This world's Gérard glared at the newcomer with hostile eyes.
Though there were differences in their clothing, the two were identical in appearance.
But whilst this world's Gérard was battered and covered in wounds, the Gérard who had come to fetch Ortansia regarded his other self with the sort of look one might give a particularly unpleasant insect.
‘Wait, why are there two of them...?!’
She had been so overwhelmed by the emotion of her brother's arrival that she hadn't noticed, but thinking about it now, having two Gérards made no sense whatsoever.
Ortansia had changed her parents' fate, and as a result, the history of the ducal house had changed as well.
The cold-hearted brother Gérard should have become one loved by his parents and sister, so why did the Gérard from the original world still exist here?
...Perhaps one of them was an impostor.
Ortansia quickly reached that conclusion.
Common sense would suggest that it was strange for her brother Gérard, who should have vanished, to suddenly appear like this, but...
‘...No, this brother is real.’
She knew it instinctively.
The Gérard at her side now was the "brother" with whom she had spent so much time.
Yet she couldn't believe this world's Gérard was false either.
As Ortansia stood confused, this world's Gérard reached out his hand.
"Come here, Ortansia ! Get away from him!"
"Ah..."
Ortansia found herself faltering.
This world's Gérard had reached out to her in her loneliness and truly saved her.
"Ortansia !"
Her heart wavered at the desperate look on this world's Gérard's face.
But in that instant, as though sensing her hesitation, she felt herself pulled back by a firm grip from behind.
"Don't listen to him. We're leaving."
The Gérard from the original world spoke as though instructing a child.
But this world's Gérard wasn't about to stay silent.
"Silence, impostor! Where do you think you're taking *my* Ortansia ?!"
"*Your* Ortansia , you say...?"
In that moment, Ortansia could feel the original Gérard's mood plummet sharply.
What she sensed from behind was a terrifying bloodlust and an overwhelming pressure.
But it wasn't directed at her.
It was aimed at the other Gérard, identical to him as though reflected in a mirror.
"Don't talk nonsense. Ortansia doesn't belong to you. Don't get above yourself."
The original Gérard's voice was as cold as a blizzard that could freeze everything in its path.
This world's Gérard looked briefly cowed, but quickly rallied, glaring back defiantly.
"Stop your prattling...! Just give Ortansia back!"
Finally, this world's Gérard picked up a sword that had fallen nearby.
He intended to use force.
"Please wait, Lord Gérard!"
Ortansia let out an involuntary cry.
If this carried on, something dreadful would happen...!
"Stand back, Ortansia . I don't want you caught up in this."
"But…"
Ortansia tried to protest, but a firm push on her shoulder from behind made her stumble backwards.
"Stay out of the way. This'll be over quickly."
The one who stepped forward was the Gérard from the original world, who'd come to fetch her.
"Brother, this person... he's not a bad person, truly..."
"I'm only going to silence him for a bit."
Whether he'd understood Ortansia's plea not to be rough, Gérard stated this matter-of-factly.
But his eyes were fixed on this world's Gérard with a piercing glare.
The air grew tense as the two Gérards stared each other down.
...The one who moved first was this world's Gérard.
He lunged at the original Gérard with swift movements, his blade flashing.
‘Brother...!’
Ortansia screamed inwardly and found herself stepping forward without thinking.
But before she could, the fight was over. In barely an instant.
