174 I'm the One Who Should Be Loved.
The impact sent Gérard and Ortansia flying against the wall.
"Ugh...!"
Though Ortansia was unharmed because Gérard had shielded her, Gérard groaned as his body struck the wall hard.
"Master Gérard!"
"Ortansia..."
When she frantically called out to him, GĂ©rard pulled Ortansia’s body close protectively.
With a grim expression, he glared at the one who had likely attacked them, Marguerite.
"This is wrong, this is all wrong."
Ortansia looked the same way and let out a small involuntary scream.
Where her gaze fell, Marguerite rose unsteadily to her feet.
...She was clearly abnormal now.
The usual selfish yet radiant and lovely atmosphere of a ducal daughter had vanished, replaced by an ominous aura like that of an evil spirit.
Marguerite raised her face and turned her gaze directly at Ortansia.
That expression... was filled with unmistakable murderous intent.
"I'm Brother's sister... I'm the one who should be loved by Brother..."
Just as the grudge-filled mutter reached her ears, Marguerite moved.
"Why does it have to be someone like you!!"
"Ngh!?"
Assaulted by another strong impact, Ortansia groaned.
"Stop it! Marguerite!!"
"Shut up!!"
Gérard rushed forward to stop Marguerite, but the moment she shouted, his body was slammed to the floor.
"You're not my brother. If you were my brother, you would love me the most."
With cold eyes, Marguerite looked down at Gérard, who collapsed on the floor.
She walked right past Gérard and came to where Ortansia was.
"If only you... if only you weren't here..."
At Marguerite's mutter filled with anger, hatred, and resentment, Hortensia felt sad.
‘Have I failed again...?’
She had thought that in this world, Gérard could be happy.
She had thought that, surrounded by kind parents and a biological sister, he could obtain the peaceful happiness that he couldn't get in the original world.
And yet... Ortansia, who had wished for his happiness more than anyone, had destroyed the peace of the ducal house.
"It's all your fault, Ortansia."
Like a condemnation, Marguerite's words gnawed at Ortansia's heart.
At the same time, the ominous aura surrounding Marguerite entwined itself around Ortansia's entire body.
"If only you weren't here, everything would have gone well. Everyone would have been happy."
"Ngh..."
She was assaulted by pain as if her entire body were being squeezed by a giant hand.
But more than that... her heart hurt.
No matter what Ortansia did, no matter whose happiness she wished for, it only had the opposite effect in the end.
‘I'm someone who would be better off not existing…’
If only Ortansia weren't here, everyone could have been happy.
‘If only I... weren't here…’
Her head was dominated by such dark thoughts, her consciousness sinking down, fading.
"Your very birth was a mistake, Ortansia. So…"
Marguerite grinned wickedly, and it felt as if both body and soul were sinking into darkness, into deep despair.
But at that moment…
"Kyaa!"
Suddenly the area was enveloped in dazzling light, and Marguerite screamed.
The pain of her entire body being squeezed eased, and Ortansia raised her head.
Seeing the scene before her... she involuntarily doubted her eyes.
"Eh...?"
A large tear had appeared not in the furniture or floor, but in empty space itself.
...As if someone had slashed through space.
Before Ortansia's astonished eyes, something even more surprising occurred.
A human figure was visible beyond the tear.
That figure was approaching closer and closer.
As if peering at a water's surface, what form it took was blurred.
But Ortansia understood just from the hazy silhouette.
‘No, it can't be…’
With disbelief, she stared at what lay beyond the tear.
Finally, the figure appeared as if passing through a veil of light.
"B-Brother..."
Almost reflexively, Ortansia muttered.
The one who appeared from beyond the tear in space was... Ortansia's stepbrother, Gérard.
