CHAPTER 4
PART 2
Everyone looked at each other. Li Xueli said, "Nothing special happened. We chatted and had dinner as usual. Han Lei made jokes about Yuan Dong, and Sister Yamei was laughing happily. She even said that our group's friendship and affection were the purest."
"So, none of you noticed any unusual behavior from Gong Yamei? She didn't say anything out of the ordinary?" Tan Yong asked.
Everyone shook their heads.
"Then what did you do after dinner?"
"I suggested going to a bar to have fun. So, Su Xiaotong, Wang Xingxing, Xia Qi, and I went to the bar where I perform," Han Lei said.
Tan Yong took out a pen and a small notebook from his police uniform pocket and leaned over the coffee table to record. "Han Lei, Su Xiaotong, Wang Xingxing, Xia Qi, you four went to the bar. What about the others?"
"I went home with Wen Jing a little after 8:00 PM," Fan Lin said. "I stayed at home with Wenjing to do her homework."
"I did the same. Almost at the same time as Fan Lin and her daughter. I went home with Xiao Liang and didn't go out again," Gu Lei said.
Tan Yong made a note and then looked at the remaining people.
"Yes, Gu Lei and Fan Lin both went home with their children. Only Yuan Dong, Feng Xia, Sister Yamei, and I were left here," Li Xueli said.
"What did you do at home?"
"We watched TV, a popular drama series currently airing on television."
"Until what time?"
"Until 10 o'clock." Yuan Dong remembered clearly, "The TV series starts at 8:00 PM, with two episodes every night, and it ends at exactly 10 o'clock."
"After watching, then what?"
"Then Feng Xia and I went downstairs," Yuan Dong said, and Feng Xia nodded beside him.
After recording the information, Tan Yong looked at Li Xueli, "Then, there were only you and Gong Yamei left at home."
Not just him, everyone's eyes were focused on Li Xueli. Li Xueli called out, "What are you all staring at me for? Yes, after Yuan Dong and the others left, only Sister Yamei and I were left at home. I asked her if she wanted to have some late-night snacks, and she said yes. So, I cooked some glutinous rice balls in sweet wine soup."
"Then, what happened? After eating the glutinous rice balls, what did you do?"
"Nothing. After eating, she went upstairs and went home."
"Approximately what time was that?"
"After Yuan Dong and the others left, it was about twenty minutes later."

"From cooking the glutinous rice balls to finishing eating, it only took twenty minutes?" Tan Yong was an experienced person in life. "My wife also cooks glutinous rice balls in sweet wine soup for me. It takes at least ten minutes from boiling the water to cooking them. And the freshly cooked glutinous rice balls are very hot. Did Gong Yamei finish eating them in five minutes and then go upstairs? She's not someone who needs to wake up early tomorrow. Why would she be in such a hurry?"
"She didn't finish... After eating for a few minutes, she apologized and said she had to go back."
"How much of the glutinous rice balls did she eat?"
"Probably less than half."
Tan Yong pondered for a moment and said, "This is a problem. The fact that Gong Yamei agreed to stay for the late-night snack shows that she was a bit hungry. From what I know about her, she's not the type to waste food. Normally, even if she couldn't finish, she would try to eat more to avoid wasting it. But this time, why did she leave more than half and suddenly say goodbye?"
"I don't know..." Li Xueli murmured.
"The only possibility is that something 'happened' during those ten minutes when you were cooking the glutinous rice balls, causing Gong Yamei to suddenly lose her appetite. After that, she reluctantly ate a few bites and then left." Tan Yong stared at Li Xueli. "Tell me the truth, Xueli, what did you talk about during those twenty minutes alone with Gong Yamei? Did anything unpleasant happen or any conflicts arise?"
"Nothing!" Li Xueli exclaimed in great frustration, "I swear, nothing happened! We didn't even chat much. Sister Yamei was in the living room watching TV or using her phone, and I was in the kitchen boiling water and cooking the glutinous rice balls. After cooking, I served them in two separate bowls and brought them out. Sister Yamei ate a few bites and said she had to go back. I was a bit puzzled at the time, asking her why she was in such a hurry to go upstairs. She didn't say much and then left!"
"Okay, I understand. Don't be upset," Tan Yong noticed that Li Xueli was close to tears and comforted her, "I need to ask for more details to rule out various possibilities."
"Sister Yamei told you she was going upstairs to go home?" Su Xiaotong frowned, "But a few dozen minutes later, she drowned in Yuehai."
"That's right, Gong Yamei never went home. Instead, she took the elevator downstairs and left this community. Then she took a taxi and went to Huanhai East Road. I confirmed this through the surveillance footage in the community and on the street," Tan Yong said.
"Why would she lie to me and say she was going home?" Li Xueli said in confusion.
"Based on what you know about Gong Yamei, does she have a habit of going out at night?" Tan Yong asked.
Everyone shook their heads. Fan Lin said, "No, Sister Yamei either stays at Xueli's house or goes back to her own home at night. She doesn't have any other acquaintances or friends in Lishi, so she generally doesn't go out at night."
"Yes, even if she wanted to take a walk, she could have just walked in the courtyard of the community. There's no need to go all the way to Yuehai beach at night," Shen Fengxia said.
"Speaking of this issue, how far is the location where Sister Yamei had the accident from our community?" Wang Xingxing asked.
"If you take a taxi, it takes about ten minutes," Tan Yong said, "As you said, it's not necessary to specifically take a taxi to such a far place for a walk late at night. So I tend to believe that she went there for a purpose. To put it more clearly, she went there to meet someone and then met with foul play."
"Tan Lao, you used the term 'foul play,' does that mean you have already classified this case as a murder case?" Su Xiaotong asked anxiously.
Tan Yong fell silent for a few seconds and nodded, "Yes. I am almost certain that this is a homicide case."
