CHAPTER 23
After our meal, Ilvis and I immediately returned to the mansion.
That night, I wanted a more definite and secure way to break off the engagement and just find happiness. But running away wouldn't solve anything.
Because if my fiancé could resort to such measures just because I resisted a little...
Ilvis apologized for his overly optimistic judgment, but he had no need to feel guilty. I was the one who let my fiancé steal my younger sister. Instead of obediently following my parents' orders and hiding, I should have immediately gone public and broken off the engagement. Yes, I would have become a pitiable woman who lost her fiancé, but at least I could have avoided marrying him.
It was my attempt to play the tragic heroine that complicated things like this. The one tormenting me was none other than myself.

Listening to Ilvis, I made up my mind. When I shared the plan that came to mind, Ilvis immediately raised objections, as it was a plan hanging on the edge of a gamble. After convincing him, he reluctantly agreed to it with conditions.
The direction my fiancé headed earlier was towards the Earl's residence. Since the Marquess's home was the opposite direction, he must have gone back to the Earl's place instead of returning home. It seemed better for him to wait for my return rather than aimlessly wandering the town.
The thought of my fiancé welcoming me home was daunting. On the other hand, it also meant he knew where I was until I returned.
Today, my fiancé following us was an impulsive action. But once executed, it would be easier for him to act again. However, that would put us on the defensive.
That's why I decided to strike first while we still could.
"We can see the Earl's mansion now."
"It feels strange, doesn't it? We arrived in the town so early in the morning, but the way back feels incredibly long."
My own home appeared like a demon king's castle from a fairy tale. Well, to be fair, my childhood home was a dark and suffocating place, so it wasn't entirely inaccurate.

"You're serious, aren't you?"
"Yes."
"You understand the danger in this, right?"
"Yes, if I make one wrong move, it will turn into an irreversible disaster."
"If I make a mistake, you won't be able to escape from there ever again. Are you fine with that?"
"If that's the result of my fight, I will accept it."
"There are better ways. Can't you rely on me, even though I made a mistake once? If that's the case..."
"It's not like that."
I retort to Ilvis' words with a touch of defensiveness.
Once again, I felt sorry for dragging him into my mess. If we manage to resolve this safely, I would have to find a way to express my gratitude. It might be impossible to provide something equal to Ilvis' kindness, but I'd try my best.

"If I didn't trust Ilvis-sama, I could never execute such a plan. Even though we've only known each other for a few days, I trust you more than anyone else, and that's why I relied on you."
"Just a few days."
Ilvis wore a look of disbelief, but I carried on, regardless.
"I truly apologize for getting you involved in my problems. But I want to settle this with my own hands."
With sincerity, I bow my head. I couldn't stand upright in the carriage, so I intended to press my forehead against my knees.
"Oh, Amalia!? Please raise your head! That's not what I meant. I just didn't want to put you in danger... But if that's what you want, I won't say anything more."
"Thank you. I appreciate your understanding."
"It's not a bother at all. Besides, the mistake in the beginning was mine. I'll help you make things right this time."
Ilvis still maintained his enigmatic determination, but this time he seemed to have accepted it.
While having this conversation, the mansion's gate finally came into view. As expected, the Marquess's carriage was parked in the distance.

I started feeling nervous again, taking deep breaths. From here on out, Ilvis and I will have to split up temporarily.
...It's regrettable that even though I claimed I would fight, in the end, I had to rely on Ilvis. But I had no choice since I didn't have anyone else in my family I could depend on.
Strengthening my resolve, I stepped out of the carriage. After bidding farewell to Ilvis, who escorted me, I made my way through the gates of the mansion.
My hands were trembling slightly, but that must be what they call the trembling of a warrior.
