CHAPTER 47 - CHECKING THE PULSE AND CHECKING THE POISON (1)
Upon arriving at Yunhua Residence, Yun Qingqiao found her mother, Ye Heying, immersed in a book. Ye Heying looked up with concern.
"Qiao'er, it's late. Why are you here?"
"I had some concerns and wanted to check on you," Yun Qingqiao replied, deliberately omitting the events that had unfolded at Lianzhi Hall.
Ye Heying set her book aside.
"It could wait until tomorrow."
"I thought of it and came right away. Mother, aren't you happy to see your daughter?" Yun Qingqiao said playfully, gently taking her mother's wrist to feel her pulse.
Realizing her daughter's intent, Ye Heying asked,
"Qiao'er, what's wrong? Did you find something?"
After examining her mother's pulse, Yun Qingqiao called in Ju Xiang and Bi Tao, Ye Heying’s devoted personal maids, under the guise of chatting and expressing gratitude for their care. She warmly held their hands, subtly checking their pulses as well.
She then did the same for Madam Hua, Ye Heying's headmaid, and even inspected Ye Heying’s clothing.
Anxious, Ye Heying pressed, "Qiao'er, what is it? What have you discovered?"
"Mother, there are toxins in your body, just as you mentioned earlier about the complications from your miscarriage. But I've discovered that the amount of these toxins is increasing. Although it's invisible to most, I sensed it when I first checked your pulse this afternoon. On closer examination now, it's evident the toxins are gradually accumulating," Yun Qingqiao said gravely, her mind racing with questions about how the poisoning could have occurred.

Ye Heying, reclining on her couch, turned ashen upon hearing this. Her fingers clenched tightly, fear and disbelief evident in her eyes. She had stepped back from her duties as the wife of the Prime Minister and no longer meddled in the estate's affairs. Was someone still intent on harming her, even now?
The painful memory of her miscarriage returned, haunting her — the loss of her child felt like a vital part of her heart had been torn away, causing a deep, searing pain that seemed to spread through her entire being. And now, those who had harmed her then seemed to be after her life.
Yun Qingqiao continued, "That's why I checked on your maids and Madam Hua but found no toxins. Your clothes also appear safe, ruling out direct contact poisoning. This leads me to suspect the food. Madam Hua, do we still have leftovers from tonight's meal?”
Madam Hua, visibly shaken, replied, "Miss, the kitchen staff always clear away the dishes promptly after Madam finishes her meal."
The realization that someone might have poisoned the food without their knowledge sent a chill down her spine.
Yun Qingqiao pressed on, "Compared to last year's period, has Mother's health deteriorated significantly? Has her cough worsened, yet nothing seems to be coughed up?"
Madam Hua nodded in confirmation. "Yes, Miss, that's exactly what's been happening."
Yun Qingqiao analyzed further, "I haven't detected anything unusual in this courtyard. If there were toxins present, I would have noticed immediately. Mother, do you trust my medical skills?"
Ye Heying, her fingers now unclenching, looked at her daughter with relief and pride.
"Your uncle secretly wrote to me about your medical prowess, which even your father is unaware of. I believe in you, Qiao. You're the smartest child I know," she said gently.
CHECKING THE PULSE AND CHECKING THE POISON (2)
Yun Qingqiao instructed calmly, "Madam Hua, let's keep my medical skills a secret for now. The maids might be loyal, but when I checked their pulses, I made it look casual. They probably didn't notice, but we can't be too careful. Please keep an eye on them. Any unusual behavior or contact with suspicious individuals must be reported immediately."
Madam Hua bowed respectfully.
"Understood, Miss. The safety of Madam is of utmost importance."
Yun Qingqiao spoke with determination, "If my suspicions are correct, then the poison is added to Mother's food. It's a subtle toxin, hard to detect, and coupled with the previous poisoning incident, the accumulation over time has been degrading her health. If left untreated, the toxin could become deeply ingrained in her system."
Furious, Youzhu clenched her fists.
"Whoever did this, they'll pay!"
Madam Hua, wringing her hands anxiously, asked, "Miss, can we save Madam? The doctors we've seen couldn't find anything. Despite all the treatments, her condition hasn't improved."
Yun Qingqiao turned to reassure her, "Don't worry, Madam Hua. As long as I'm here, I'll find a way to cure Mother. Youzhu and Jingyu, stay alert. I may need your skills soon.”
"Mother, don't worry. With me here, everything will get better," Yun Qingqiao assured with a confident smile, her voice calm yet filled with reassuring determination.

Ye Heying nodded, filled with admiration and comfort from her daughter's mature demeanor. Despite her young age, Yun Qingqiao's poise and calm were remarkable.
"Starting tomorrow, we won't eat anything from the main kitchen. We can dispose of a small portion outside the estate to avoid suspicion and return the rest, saying that your appetite has declined. They're bound to react somehow. The medicine is prepared in the small kitchen, right?" Yun Qingqiao asked.
Madam Hua confirmed with a nod.
"Then we'll stop the current medication from tomorrow. For food, I'll arrange for supplies to be delivered. We'll prepare meals in the small kitchen here. Let's hold off on any tonics or supplements for now. With the excess toxins in your body, they won't help and might even worsen your condition."
Yun Qingqiao's voice was firm, outlining her plan to safeguard her mother's health.
Pausing momentarily, Yun Qingqiao added, "For the first three days, a light diet of porridge and simple foods will suffice to aid digestion. After three days, I'll recheck your pulse. If the toxins haven't increased, we can confirm that the problem lies with the food. If your condition allows, I'll start acupuncture treatments after three days and will explain the necessary precautions then. Madam Hua, I'll be relying on you during this time, and I'll ask Madam Su to come over frequently to assist."
Madam Hua, deeply moved by her young mistress's assured demeanor, responded with a choked voice, "I understand, Miss. I'll do anything to help cure the lady. Just leave it to me."
Ye Heying, touched by their dedication, patted Madam Hua's hand affectionately and looked at Yun Qingqiao lovingly.
"Qiao'er, it's getting late. You should head back to your courtyard. Remember, you have to go to the palace tomorrow."
After giving a few more instructions, Yun Qingqiao, accompanied by Youzhu and Jingyu, vanished into the night.
