At 4 PM, Tan Yong and Li Bin arrived at the captain's office. Seeing their unusual expressions, Jiang Ming couldn't help but ask if they had cracked the case. Tan Yong revealed that they had indeed solved the case of He Yushan from two years ago. However, the perpetrator was already deceased—Gong Yamei.
Jiang Ming was surprised to learn that Gong Yamei had killed the out-of-town tenant, He Yushan, two years prior. He inquired about their connection and the motive behind the crime. Tan Yong explained that initially, there was no connection between the two women, but Fan Ke had played a pivotal role in linking them together during interrogation.
Tan Yong continued, revealing Fan Ke's confession about his past romantic involvement with He Yushan and how he had callously treated her, leading to her decision to undergo cosmetic surgery that went awry, leaving her disfigured. He Yushan, heartbroken and disfigured, moved away to heal, while Fan Ke completely cut ties with her.
The conversation unfolded further, recounting how He Yushan, feeling deceived and rejected, harbored revengeful sentiments toward Fan Ke. Unable to find him, she attempted to reach him through dozens of phone calls to various companies, including Gong Yamei's.
Tan Yong confessed his oversight in not thoroughly investigating He Yushan's phone calls, assuming they were solely for job applications. However, they later realized the significance of these calls, indicating He Yushan's attempts to locate Fan Ke.

Finally, Li Bin mentioned finding He Yushan's phone in a cabinet at the technical department, revealing her calls to Gong Yamei's company on the day of the murder among other companies. This discovery shed light on He Yushan's relentless pursuit to track down Fan Ke.
"Among these dozens of calls, the first one was to Gong Yamei's company," Li Bin said, patting Tan Yong's shoulder. "But, to be honest, Old Tan, this isn't your fault. You didn't know Gong Yamei, and how could you have known whom He Yushan was trying to reach at that company's reception? Nobody could have guessed that it was a woman nursing a broken heart and seeking revenge, who, unable to find her ex-boyfriend, dialed the chairman of his mother's company."
"Right, Li Bin's right. At that time, nobody could have foreseen this. It's not your fault, Old Tan, no need to blame yourself," Jiang Ming reassured.

Tan Yong nodded and continued, "Evidently, when He Yushan was involved with Fan Ke, she knew that Gong Yamei, Fan Ke's mother, was the chairman of a company. After being blocked by Fan Ke, she recalled this and found the company's number in the business directory, attempting to reach Gong Yamei. What exactly she said to Gong Yamei remains unknown. But the end result was that after making that call, Gong Yamei boarded a plane to Lishi and met He Yushan at 1203 Yuehai Bay a few hours later."
"From the outcome, one can infer the content of that call," Jiang Ming said. "Complaints, accusations, venting—these are secondary. The crucial part would likely have been threats. For instance, He Yushan might have threatened Gong Yamei, saying she wanted to see Fan Ke one last time, or else she would cause trouble at Gong Yamei's company, tarnishing their reputation. Or she might have directly stated her intention to kill Fan Ke, a tragic end for both of them. Hearing such things, Gong Yamei would naturally be frightened, trying to pacify He Yushan and promptly flying to Lishi to handle the situation."
"Yes," Tan Yong continued. "When Gong Yamei came to Lishi to meet He Yushan, her initial intent might not have been to kill her but perhaps to offer compensation. However, upon meeting He Yushan and seeing her mentally distressed state, irrational behavior, and inability to communicate, she might have felt compelled to eliminate her. "The first was placing He Yushan's body in the fridge and cleaning up the blood at the scene. As He Yushan was a solitary woman without relatives or friends in Lishi, her death might not have been discovered immediately. In reality, it took more than twenty days for the landlord and police to realize she had been murdered. But Gong Yamei couldn't guarantee this. What if the landlord had opened the door the next day and found it? Therefore, she had to do two more things.
"The second was knowing that He Yushan had called her that day. If the police found the call records, they'd find it suspicious and eventually trace it back to her through the company's phone. So, she used He Yushan's phone to call dozens of similar companies, pretending to be a job applicant. This cleverly obscured her company's phone among these calls. Even if the police checked the call logs from He Yushan's phone, they wouldn't immediately notice Gong Yamei's company's number."
"This woman thought of everything..." Jiang Ming shook his head in disbelief, gesturing for Tan Yong to continue.
"This was Gong Yamei's second action. The third was buying the house in Yuehai Bay. After the murder, she didn't immediately leave but stayed in Lishi for a few more days. Because she knew that if she hurriedly left that night and was caught on surveillance the next day in Yuehai Bay's 12th floor, being an outsider would raise suspicions. She couldn't explain why she was there, making her a prime suspect.

Li Bin and I confirmed this at the agency; they remembered the incident. Apparently, Gong Yamei looked at several apartments—4th, 10th, 12th, 13th floors... and she indeed purchased the apartment 1303 on the 13th floor. This way, she could disguise her presence in Lishi as house-hunting, making her appearance in the area seem entirely natural—cleverly masking her abrupt appearance in the neighborhood on the night of the crime."
Jiang Ming took a deep breath, shaking his head. "This woman's mind is too meticulous. No wonder we couldn't crack the case for over two years."
"Yes, Gong Yamei once mentioned that she's good at math, indicating strong logical thinking. These three actions were her attempts to evade suspicion. However, her plans didn't stop there. "But Gong Yamei never expected that we would catch her son after two years and inadvertently uncover some information during interrogation, linking various suspicious points and ultimately solving this case that seemed unsolvable," Li Bin remarked, feeling amazed.
"Yes, you both deserve credit!" Jiang Ming commended, then turned to Tan Yong. "You mentioned that these speculations have been confirmed, how?"
Tan Yong explained, "Gong Yamei once told us that after going through various hardships, she didn't want to live anymore. It was later when she received guidance from a certain 'master' that she regained faith in life. I just called Lawyer Feng to ask if he knew this 'master,' and coincidentally, he was the one introduced to Gong Yamei by Lawyer Feng. So, I got his number."
"After conversing, I learned that this 'master' is a recluse, a practicing spiritual figure away from worldly affairs. Gong Yamei sought guidance from him after the murder."

Hearing this, Jiang Ming understood："So Gong Yamei bought the 1303 apartment because it was directly above 1203."

Li Bin expressed doubts, "Is the inn owner reliable?"
Jiang Ming chuckled, "This inn's owner happens to be my friend. Although not a police officer, getting their assistance won't be a problem."
