VOLUME 2: MEETING KLAUS
Chapter 12: In the Orphanage
Though he attends the orphanage, Klaus never comes.
Rather than waiting here, wouldn't it be better to attend his brother's school event?
But there aren't many chances to enter the school.
Maybe during the end-of-year festival or the promenade at the end of the semester.
The festival is a year away, and the promenade is six months away.
I felt scared that if I took it too easy, misfortune would strike.
Today, I baked a cake with plenty of dried fruits and visited the orphanage.
Since I come every week, Sister Camilla seemed deeply embarrassed.
"Somehow, I feel sorry."
"We have many sick children, so I'm worried."
I couldn't say that I check every week to see if Klaus has come.
"Oh, it seems like the number of children is decreasing again."
"Yes!"
Sister Camilla happily reported that adoption was going well.
"I'm glad. I hope all the children in this world can be happy."
"Yes, indeed."
I agree with that sentiment, but I suddenly had a question.
When the director was here, adoptions took time and were done slowly.
They thoroughly investigated the personalities and income of those who wished to adopt as well as carefully assessed compatibility with the children.
If the child didn't refuse, they would send them out for adoption.
They took their time, over half a year, to carefully assess.
From recent stories, it seemed that the children were being adopted one after another.
Now, Sister Camilla seems to be acting as acting director, but did she change the adoption process?
"Sister Camilla, I have a question."
"What is it?"
"Until last week, there was a girl named Mia, about five years old, right? Where did she go?"
"Mia was adopted by a couple who own a shoe shop on the main street."
"I see. I'll stop by on my way back to see how she's doing."
"Oh, no, wait. Without reading the records, we won't know for sure."
I swallowed the word "why." Without pressing further, I smiled and left.
I have a bad feeling. The alarm bells in my mind were ringing, telling me to leave here quickly.
I met up with Maya, whom I had kept waiting outside the orphanage.
While walking, I told him I wanted to make a detour.
"Oh, that's unusual."
"I have something I want to investigate a little."
"Where are you going?"
"To the shoe shop on the main street."
I paid the extra fee. As I walked, Maya suddenly grabbed my arm.
He leaned in and whispered in a low voice.
"It seems like someone is following us."
"Eh!"
Who could it be? I shivered.
Perhaps it's the men from the lower town that Klaus attacked before.
"When I give the signal, let's run."
I nodded firmly.
After one, two, three steps, Maya blew a whistle.
At that moment, I started running.
"Wait!!"
"Stop!!"
I could hear the men shouting behind me. Judging from their footsteps, there were five or six of them.
They had prepared quite a large crowd.
"Miss, I'll handle this, so let's meet up at the destination!"
The destination would be the shoe shop I mentioned earlier.
I nodded and parted ways with him.
When I got to the main street, there was a patrol knight. If something happened, he would help.
As I ran desperately, I accidentally bumped into a man who turned the corner of the building.
"Oh, where are you looking?"
"Ah, ahead..."
I answered, following Klaus's example.
When I timidly raised my head, I recognized the face.
It was a man from the lower town who had chased me before.
"Oh, it's you!"
"Long time no see!"
The man reached out his arm, so I instinctively dodged. Not only that, but I also kicked his shin with all my might.
"Ugh!! You damn woman!!"
It was an effective blow; he squatted down on the spot and didn't try to move.
"All right!" With my fists clenched, I started running away.
"Wait!!"
"Stop!!"
I could hear the men's shouts from behind. It seemed there were five or six of them.
I felt a shiver down my spine, wondering who it could be.
Before I could confirm what it was, I was caught.
My wrist was held tightly, and I was pulled forcefully.
If they put in a little more effort, my body would have floated.
It was like I was hanging in a butcher shop.
Thinking that, I raised my gaze.
The one who caught me was a man dressed all in black.
From his feet to his waist, chest, neck, and black hair—I confirmed each part and, finally, our eyes met.
He had crimson eyes as red as blood.
"Ugh!!"
There was no mistaking it. The one capturing me was Demon Prince Klaus von Lure Dinglefelder.
"Why are you here?"
"T-That's..."
I couldn't speak properly with my cheeks being crushed.
Even if I appealed for him to let me go, Klaus just stared at me with my cheeks crushed.
"Your Highness, please wait!!"
Maya tried to stop Klaus's violence.
Despite facing multiple men, he seemed fine, and I was relieved to see that he
didn't seem injured despite his disheveled appearance.
"Who are you?"
"I apologize for my appearance."
Maya bowed with his fist on his chest, showing the respect of a knight.
"I am Matthias von Borchart of the Third Prince's Royal Guard."
"For a knight to stroll through the city in a maid's outfit, you're quite amusing."
"I have no words to return."
Klaus and Maya, now Matthias, stared at each other in the tense atmosphere.
I silently wished that Klaus would stop pulling my arm and crushing my cheeks.
