VOLUME 2: MEETING KLAUS
Chapter 13: Interrogation of Klaus
How on earth did this situation come about?
I was planning to propose marriage to Klaus the next time I saw him.
Now, there's a volcanic eruption of emotions inside me, a feeling of absolute unwillingness to get married.
Meeting Klaus again, whom I had missed so much, made me yearn to part ways immediately.
The atmosphere between Klaus and Matthias was like that of a snake meeting a frog.
It's a mystery why Matthias, a knight, seems overwhelmed by someone younger. It's probably because of the overwhelming presence of the Demon Prince.
"Your Excellency, the young lady over there should have nothing to do with the incident."
"Then why have you been hanging around the orphanage lately?"
Klaus asked, glaring at me with eyes that seemed to see through enemies.
It didn't feel like an atmosphere where I could say, 'I came to propose marriage to you.'
"Your Excellency, it seems the young lady can't speak with her cheeks being crushed like that. Also, please release her hand. Her arm is so thin, it might break off."
"I'm not an insect's leg."
Despite his words, he let go. However, he continued to send an intimidating glare and remained vigilant to prevent me from escaping.
"I was using my mother's inheritance to engage in charity work before marriage. I was also worried about the epidemic."
"Yes, that's right! She even planned to establish a clinic in the lower town!"
It was surprising that Matthias knew all that. I had been doing it anonymously.
"Um, Maya, how did you know that?"
"T-That's..."
Matthias quickly looked away, seeming uncomfortable. Instead of him, Klaus explained.
"It seems his master ordered him to find out what you were doing charity work for."
"I see."
"I'm sorry."
At this point, Matthias properly introduced himself by his real name.
The clinic had received donations and had become quite extensive. It was already out of my hands, and the donations were managed by another noble.
It's better for the head of a noble family to manage it than a little girl like me taking the lead. That's why I entrusted it to someone who volunteered.
I never expected it to be misused like this...
"It seems there was rampant embezzlement of donations. The Third Prince seemed to suspect that you were behind it."
"Really!"
To conduct a detailed investigation, the Third Prince sent Matthias to me.
"Lau, were you also investigating the flow of donations?"
"No."
Klaus called him 'Your Excellency.' If they were both knights, he would have addressed him as Lord Dingfelder.
"Lau-sama belongs to an organization other than the Knights and was investigating another incident, right?"
"..."
His silence seemed to confirm it.
"Hey, Matthias. What organization does he belong to?"
"Um, well, that's..."
"He addressed him as 'Your Excellency,' so he's not a knight, right?"
"T-That's... Ugh!"
Matthias, sweating profusely, stumbled over his words.
It was starting to feel pitiful, but he had approached me hiding his true intentions. I had the right to pursue it.
I had been cornering Matthias little by little, but Klaus provided an answer to the question.
"I belong to the Ironside, a cavalry unit directly under His Majesty the King."
I had never heard of the Ironside organization before.
As I looked bewildered, Matthias whispered to me.
"It's like a knight who serves His Majesty the King more closely than the Royal Guard."
It seemed to be an organization not publicly disclosed, so it was normal not to know about it.
Unlike knights who work in groups, they seem to operate individually.
"Was it okay for me to know that information?"
"No, it wasn't. That's why tell me about the orphanage you know about."
It was more like an order than a negotiation.
"Anyway, since we're just standing here, would you like to sit down somewhere and have tea?"
I had come here without a break since morning. I was hungry and thirsty.
Since I didn't know who might be listening here, I suggested it.
Klaus just said, "Follow me," and turned on his heel.
I followed him and arrived not at a stylish café but at a shabby tavern.
Since it was still daytime, the tavern wasn't open for business yet, but Klaus went in through the back like he owned the place.
There was a hidden entrance to the basement from the warehouse-like room, and we went down the stairs from there.
At the end of the dim corridor was a café. It was a small shop with only counter seats.
A middle-aged man in his forties seemed to be the owner and welcomed us with a smile.
"Welcome."
"Three cups of tea."
Klaus ordered on his own and took a seat. I sat down next to him, leaving one seat empty.
I gestured to Matthias to join us, but he declined.
Tea and butter cake were brought to us. I was so hungry that the owner seemed like a god.
Gratefully, I enjoyed them. The tea was delicious, and I was very satisfied.
As I drank the second cup of tea, Klaus began to speak.
"In the lower town, people have been disappearing one after another."
"What!?"
Rumors in the underworld suggested that they were being sold as slaves to other countries. Klaus had received orders from His Majesty the King to investigate this incident.
"After investigating diligently, I narrowed down the suspects to the director of the orphanage."
"No way! Dr. Director is not a bad person!"
He was someone who worked tirelessly for the sake of children without families.
"When I tried to investigate the director further, he suddenly fell ill and fled to the countryside."
"T-That's..."
Since I hadn't met the sick director, I couldn't verify the truth.
"In place of the director, a certain noble lady began to frequent the orphanage. She also successfully established a clinic in the lower town and collected a large amount of donations."
"Um, she seems very suspicious."
"It's you."
"Yes, it's me."
I hadn't known that things had come to this.
Like Matthias, sweat was pouring from my forehead.
"Indeed, I have been frequenting the orphanage lately and also established a clinic."
Regarding the former, it was to meet Klaus, and regarding the latter, it was partly due to my shattered dreams.
I had no idea that it would put my own position at risk.
"The culprit behind the incident isn't me or the director, but..."
That's right. There was only one suspicious person.
I had forgotten about it since Klaus had caught me, but I had been planning to go somewhere to gather information.
"Um, would you like to go to the shoe shop together?"
"What?"
