Chapter 30
The incident at Rongcui Hall had delayed things. The next day was the Mid-Autumn Festival, and Gu Han rose a bit late. She changed into the sapphire blue cloud-weave brocade palace dress she had selected yesterday. It cinched her slender waist and was paired with a glass hairpin, making her appear even more gentle and graceful.
The banquet was to be held in Taihe Hall. Gu Han estimated the journey and wasn't in a rush. When Jiu Si brought breakfast, she shared some news with Gu Han:
"When fetching the meal, this servant heard that Zhou Měirén rushed to Cining Palace first thing this morning."
She hadn't even taken breakfast in her own palace.
Perhaps from being blown by the night wind yesterday, Gu Han had a bit of a headache today. She furrowed her delicate brows with some discomfort, casually drank two sips of porridge, and hearing this, only said calmly:
"At the banquet, His Majesty should go to Cining Palace to invite the Empress Dowager to come along. Zhou Měirén probably wanted to follow the Empress Dowager to gain some prestige."
Gu Han put down her chopsticks. Jiu Nian frowned slightly: "The food at the banquet is unpalatable. Please eat more, Mistress."
Her head throbbed faintly. If not for being mindful of the banquet time, Gu Han would have wanted to summon a physician to examine her. Regarding Jiu Nian's words, Gu Han waved her hand: "Clear it away."
There was no need to pay respects today. When she arrived at Taihe Hall, Gu Han discovered she had come neither early nor late. But what surprised Gu Han was that Zhou Měirén, who had rushed to Cining Palace early in the morning, was already in the hall.
Gazes from all around fell upon her, annoying her with their scrutiny. Her face darkened slightly. Gu Han was led closer by palace servants and only then discovered that their seats were together. The banquet used long tables that could seat two people.
Gu Han and Zhou Meiren had similar ranks, this arrangement was not wrong.
After Gu Han was seated, Zhou Měirén glanced at her and snorted coldly: "Are you also laughing at me?"
Clearly, Zhou Měirén already knew why those people occasionally looked at her. She wasn't too stupid after all. But Gu Han silently declared her innocence. She raised her head, her eyebrows moving slightly, and gave a bitter smile:
"Why would I laugh at you?"
Zhou Měirén stared at her. The woman's almond eyes were completely clear, she truly wasn't laughing at her. Zhou Měirén looked away somewhat unnaturally, her expression improving. She spat hatefully:
"They're just jealous that I have a good aunt. If they were in my position, they'd probably do even worse than me. What right do they have to laugh at me!"
Gu Han inconspicuously rubbed her temple, acting as if she hadn't heard this. Fortunately, Zhou Měirén hadn't expected her to respond anyway. After cursing a few times, her mood improved, and she recovered her usual arrogance. Looking carefully at Gu Han, Zhou Měirén was instead somewhat suspicious:
"What's wrong with you? You look terrible."
Gu Han couldn't wait for her to change the subject. She immediately rubbed her temple: "I was blown by the cold wind last night and feel somewhat unwell."
Zhou Měirén curled her lip and muttered quietly:
"So delicate."
Gu Han's lips twitched slightly. The two sat almost shoulder to shoulder, no matter how quietly Zhou Měirén spoke, Gu Han could hear her clearly. But Gu Han could tell Zhou Měirén wasn't scolding her.
The Zhou clan had many military generals. Even their women were much more robust than ordinary young ladies.
Gu Han lowered her eyes without speaking. Zhou Měirén felt somewhat irritated. She couldn't talk to any of the imperial concubines in this harem. She couldn't stand their pretentious behavior, and those concubines also found her domineering. Even those who wanted to curry favor with her because of her aunt couldn't tolerate her temper.
Speaking a few words with Gu Han today was actually quite peaceful.
So now seeing Gu Han silent, Zhou Měirén frowned. Had she spoken too harshly? But if she couldn't even withstand a bit of wind, wasn't that being delicate?
Zhou Měirén was proud by nature. Seeing this, she also became sullen, turning her head away and refusing to speak to Gu Han anymore.
When Rong Ling entered, she saw this scene, Sister Gu and Zhou Meiren sitting together. Her heart skipped a beat, but when she approached, she discovered the atmosphere between them seemed somewhat off. Sister Gu lowered her eyes without speaking, and Zhou Meiren also wore a cold expression.
Although the atmosphere was awkward, Rong Ling breathed a sigh of relief.
She found her seat, sitting far from Sister Gu. After all, there was a rank difference between them, which meant quite a few people separated them. Just as she sat down, she heard a mocking laugh.
Rong Ling's expression changed slightly. She looked up and saw that Song Bǎolín was seated beside her. Song Bǎolín was a palace veteran who also resided in Chaoyang Palace. She wasn't close to He Xiuyi but definitely disliked Rong Ling. She said pointedly:
"Some people haven't seen His Majesty in so long, they must be thinking of climbing the social ladder and currying favor with others."
Both were Bǎolíns without imperial favor, but Rong Ling relied on her acquaintance with Gu Meiren and lived much more comfortably than she did. Song Bǎolín naturally felt unbalanced. The only thing that pleased Song Bǎolín was that He Xiuyi disliked Rong Ling.
The palace maid at the side cooperatively covered her mouth and giggled. Song Bǎolín's voice was quiet and didn't cause much commotion.
To Rong Ling, this mockery was neither here nor there. She lowered her eyes and took a sip of tea. Just when Song Bǎolín thought she didn't dare talk back, she said softly and lightly:
"That's still better than some people who want to climb the social ladder but can't find anyone to attach themselves to."
This statement struck Song Bǎolín's sore spot. Her expression changed immediately. Song Bǎolín gritted her teeth: "What are you so proud of?! You haven't attended the Emperor's bed in ages. How many more days can Gu Měirén take care of you? Sooner or later you'll end up in the same situation as me, or even worse!"
Her voice rose slightly. Both Gu Han and Zhou Měirén heard the commotion and turned their heads. Gu Han frowned lightly. Zhou Měirén snorted coldly:
"I told you she was a troublemaker who would cause problems sooner or later."
Gu Han's eyes cooled almost imperceptibly. Even though Zhou Měirén meant no harm, she very much disliked others pointing fingers at her affairs. So Gu Han only said indifferently: "Zhou Měirén need not trouble herself."
Zhou Měirén choked, glared fiercely at Gu Han, then turned her head back in frustration.
Only then did Gu Han have the leisure to focus her attention on Rong Ling. Although she didn't know what had happened, judging from their expressions, Rong Ling hadn't suffered a loss. Moreover, if she had to help with everything, then Rong Ling wouldn't be an ally to her but a burden.
As they were speaking, a graceful figure appeared at the hall entrance. Some commotion arose, and everyone looked over, Gu Han was no exception. Gu Han raised her eyebrows inconspicuously. Miao Měirén?
She had just experienced fetal disturbance yesterday. Instead of resting properly in her palace, what was she doing here?
Miao Měirén didn't pretend to support her waist, but her movements were careful and cautious. Gu Han watched helplessly as Miao Měirén bypassed a group of people and sat down above Zhou Měirén. Zhou Měirén's face turned iron blue for a moment.
Vaguely, from the corner of her eye, Gu Han caught Zhou Měirén glaring at her irritably, then muttering unclearly: "Both equally favored, why are you so useless?"
Gu Han's expression couldn't help but become strange.
To Zhou Měirén, what difference could there be between her being pregnant and Miao Měirén being pregnant?
Fortunately, before Zhou Měirén could continue, His Majesty's party arrived and the banquet officially began.
On the high platform, Lu Yu also saw Miao Měirén. His eyes darkened slightly. He turned his head and asked calmly: "Why did she come?"
Liu An followed his gaze and also paused:
"This servant doesn't know. Early this morning, a physician went to Rongcui Hall to take her pulse."
The result was the same as yesterday, Miao Meiren should rest well in the near future.
Liu An wiped nonexistent cold sweat from his forehead. What was Miao Měirén doing? Couldn't she distinguish what was important? With the fetus in her womb still unstable, why was she coming out to join this commotion?
He stole a glance at the Emperor. Sure enough, the Emperor appeared the same as usual with no change in emotion, but Liu An had some understanding of the Emperor, he must be somewhat displeased.
The Emperor had difficulty producing heirs. Fearing someone might disturb Miao Měirén's recuperation, he had issued a decree yesterday for everyone in the harem to avoid Rongcui Hall unless necessary.
Yet Miao Měirén had run out herself?
Lu Yu raised his hand and drank a cup of wine. Although displeased, the child in Miao Měirén's womb was ultimately his. So he inevitably placed some attention there. When his gaze swept over again, he suddenly caught sight of the two people beside Miao Měirén.
Zhou Meiren wore a cold smile on her face, saying something unknown, but anyone could see that mocking energy. The woman sitting beside her had a face flushed red from being scolded, lowering her head in shame.
Lu Yu raised an eyebrow almost imperceptibly and beckoned Liu An: "Go see what happened."
At her seat, Gu Han felt somewhat astringent. Just now, a palace servant had poured wine for the two of them. Gu Han was focused on the song and dance performance and didn't think anything was wrong, but Zhou Měirén suddenly scolded the servant. Gu Han came back to her senses and saw the young palace maid was so frightened she was about to cry. Afraid of disturbing others, Gu Han was about to persuade her when she heard Zhou Měirén turn her criticism toward her:
"Knowing your body is unwell yet still wanting to drink wine, do you think you're living too long?"
Only then did Gu Han realize that she had been watching so intently that at some point she had picked up the wine cup. If Zhou Měirén hadn't stopped her, she would have probably already drunk it.
Gu Han wasn't ungrateful. She immediately said softly: "Thank you for Zhou Meiren's reminder."
Zhou Meiren was stunned, as if she hadn't expected her to thank her. She unnaturally turned her head away and raised her hand to drink a cup of fruit wine. The little palace maid was thus forgotten by her.
Interrupted by this incident, Gu Han also lost her interest in watching the performance.
On the other side, Miao Měirén turned her head, taking in the commotion between the two. Suddenly, she said coldly: "Zhou Měirén and Gu Měirén seem to have quite a good relationship."
Her voice was neither high nor low, just reaching the ears of both.
The embarrassment on Gu Han's face froze slightly. She looked up, meeting Miao Měirén's gaze. Just as she was about to say something, she heard Zhou Měirén say impatiently:
"What does it have to do with you?"
Gu Han felt Zhou Měirén would sooner or later fall because of that mouth. Miao Měirén's expression indeed became somewhat colder, but no one cared, even Gu Han didn't particularly care about her feelings. Miao Měirén was aloof, and Gu Han had no desire to deal with her either. She only produced a shallow smile and said perfunctorily:
"The Empress teaches us daily to get along harmoniously. We naturally dare not forget."
Zhou Měirén felt Gu Han's words were extremely hypocritical, but when examined carefully, Gu Han's position this time was on her side. Zhou Měirén swallowed her urge to complain. Seeing Miao Měirén's expression grow even colder, Zhou Měirén even savored some of the wonderful effects of speaking this way.
Miao Meiren withdrew her gaze from the two. The moment she turned her head, her eyes were somewhat cold.
Zhou Měirén was a fool, no need to pay attention to her. Even though she had the Empress Dowager's backing, she herself was now pregnant. Miao Měirén wasn't worried the Empress Dowager would favor Zhou Měirén. Which was more important, an imperial grandchild or a niece? Miao Měirén believed the Empress Dowager could distinguish clearly.
But once Gu Měirén and Zhou Meiren got mixed up together, Miao Měirén couldn't help but take notice. Since entering the palace, Gu Měirén had been gentle and tender toward everyone. Even palace servants privately had many good things to say about her.
Right after entering the palace, she had won over Rong Bǎolín. Although Rong Bǎolín was useless, one could still glimpse some of Gu Měirén's scheming methods from this.
Liu An quietly returned to Lu Yu's side and recounted in detail what had just happened among the three Měiréns. Lu Yu glossed over their verbal dispute and narrowed his eyes slightly:
"Body unwell?"
Liu An couldn't answer. He gave an embarrassed laugh, then heard the Emperor order:
"Have the palace servants replace their fruit wine with sour plum soup."
Liu An acknowledged and withdrew, but his mind began to ponder. Miao Měirén was pregnant, Gu Meiren's body was unwell, and neither could drink wine. So whom was the Emperor's decree mainly to care for? Recalling the Emperor's earlier question, Liu An hurriedly interrupted his thoughts, not daring to think deeper.
As for Zhou Měirén? Liu An knew in his heart, she was just incidentally included.
The sour plum soup was quickly delivered by palace servants. Gu Han was very surprised. She scanned the area, only these three had received special treatment. Miao Meiren was pregnant and couldn't drink wine, she could understand that. But why had hers and Zhou Meiren's wine also been replaced?
Gu Han inconspicuously glanced behind her. It seemed their every move fell within the Emperor's sight.
She heard Zhou Měirén's dissatisfaction beside her: "Why replace mine too?"
"This is His Majesty's order."
Hearing this, Zhou Měirén immediately fell silent. Her eyes suddenly brightened, her entire being unable to conceal her joy.
Gu Han also raised her eyes, secretly looking toward that person. When she met those pitch-black eyes, Gu Han froze and hurriedly withdrew her gaze. Even knowing that at this distance the Emperor couldn't see clearly, she still blushed to the tips of her ears.
The Empress couldn't possibly have missed the Emperor's action. After a pause, she shook her head:
"His Majesty is still the most thoughtful."
She ignored Gu Han and the others, attributing the Emperor's decree to Miao Měirén. At the same time, her gaze swept over Lin Měirén, who was separated from Gu Han by only an empty aisle. Lin Měirén kept her head lowered, no one could see her expression clearly.
The Empress's eyes darkened inconspicuously.
Among the new consorts this time, there were four Měirén. Miao Měirén was pregnant, Gu Měirén was favored, Zhou Měirén had the Empress Dowager's backing, only her legitimate younger sister was often overlooked. Even the Emperor's several rewards had uniquely excluded this legitimate younger sister of hers.
The Empress didn't know what emotion she felt. She picked up some fish with her chopsticks and put it in her mouth. It was somewhat cold. After just one bite, the Empress put down her chopsticks with distaste.
The banquet proceeded peacefully. Gu Han couldn't help but be curious about Miao Měirén's purpose today. She looked at Miao Měirén a few more times. The person beside her noticed and couldn't help rolling her eyes: "Why are you looking at her?"
Gu Han wasn't sure whether Zhou Měirén knew the reason, so she lowered her eyes with a slight smile:
"I'm just somewhat curious why she isn't resting in her palace."
After a pause, Gu Han added hesitantly: "After all, there are many people with mixed intentions at the banquet. If…"
Gu Han fell silent, not saying the rest, but Zhou Měirén knew what she wanted to say. She snorted coldly and curled her lip:
"Today is a state banquet. She's carrying an imperial heir, how could she not come?"
Gu Han understood Zhou Měirén's meaning, but she furrowed her brows almost imperceptibly. It wasn't that she didn't believe Zhou Měirén's words, but, it was too frivolous.
Disregarding the fetus's safety just to show off?
Gu Han didn't understand, so she still devoted extra attention to Miao Měirén.
Because of this, when the banquet was about to end and everyone was preparing to disperse, Gu Han naturally noticed the palace servant who walked behind Miao Měirén with lowered head. Gu Han's expression changed slightly. This matter originally had nothing to do with her, but Miao Měirén happened to be right beside her.
Before Gu Han could decide whether to remind Miao Měirén, she saw the palace servant lower her head and step on the carpet. Miao Měirén's body tilted. Gu Han had no time to think and could only cry out: "Careful!"
The next moment, Gu Han only heard several panicked, chaotic sounds. She watched helplessly as Miao Měirén fell toward her. Below were steps. If she fell down, the consequences were imaginable. To dodge or not to dodge?
In that instant, Gu Han deeply hated whoever was behind this.
With no time for any thought, her mind went completely blank as she caught Miao Meiren. Heaven and earth spinning, her back slammed hard against the steps. Gu Han's face immediately turned deathly pale, but even so, she still gripped tightly the Miao Meiren in her arms. Gu Han only remembered that despite clenching her teeth, she still couldn't stop muffled groans.
Shocked cries came from all around. Someone seemed to rush over. Gu Han had no reaction at all. Her whole body trembled with pain—even lifting a finger felt laborious.
When Lu Yu heard the chaos and turned back, he saw this scene, Miao Měirén toppling toward the woman. The woman seemed to want to dodge, but when her gaze fell on Miao Měirén's abdomen, she froze. The next moment she gripped Miao Měirén tightly and fell from the high platform.
Lu Yu's breathing stopped for a moment.
It wasn't until the palace servants' cries brought him back to his senses that Lu Yu's expression darkened as he quickly descended the steps. Gu Han was in so much pain she was somewhat unconscious, but only one thought remained in her mind, she had risked half her life. If she still couldn't protect Miao Měirén, she would have suffered a huge loss.
There seemed to be bloodstains beneath her. People around covered their mouths in horror. Jiu Nian cried so hard she couldn't catch her breath, but kneeling beside Gu Han, she reached out her hands yet didn't dare touch her mistress. Xia Qiao's face was deathly pale:
"Quick! Quickly pull Mistress out!"
Miao Měirén was carrying an imperial heir, no one dared neglect her. They immediately tried to pry open Gu Han's hands. But just touching Gu Han made her shudder with pain, piercing straight into Jiu Nian's eyes. She tremblingly waved away the others:
"Don't move! Don't touch my mistress!"
Lu Yu had just arrived when he heard Xia Qiao shout sternly: "If there's the slightest mishap to the imperial heir in my mistress's womb, can you bear the responsibility?!"
"My mistress was severely injured protecting Miao Meiren, yet receives not a bit of gratitude and must suffer this humiliation! Had I known this, I should have died to hold back Mistress, avoiding her early like everyone else!"
Xia Qiao was left speechless. From the corner of her eye, she glimpsed Lu Yu and with a thud fell to her knees:
"Your Majesty, Mistress's condition is unknown, yet this servant here is wasting time. I beg Your Majesty to make a judgment!"
Jiu Nian also knew the imperial heir was important, but no one held a higher position in her heart than her mistress. She immediately kowtowed: "This servant dares not delay Miao Meiren's treatment, but I beg Your Majesty, in consideration of my mistress disregarding her safety to protect the heir, to let the palace servants be gentler. Mistress is in pain!"
Xia Qiao's expression changed. Jiu Nian's words instead made her seem like an ungrateful wretch. She was about to say more when Lu Yu directly cut her off coldly:
"Silence!"
He stepped forward several paces, taking in both their conditions. The woman trembled with pain throughout her body but still hadn't released her grip. Miao Měirén was protected tightly. Lu Yu didn't know what emotion to feel, but seeing the bloodstains beneath the woman, his voice was uncontrollably cold:
"Where is the physician!"
"This servant has already sent someone to fetch one." As soon as things seemed wrong, Liu An had sent someone for a physician.
Lu Yu reached out to pry open the woman's hands, but she was using so much force, and Lu Yu didn't know where she was injured, so he had several additional concerns. He lowered his eyes and, carrying an inexplicable emotion, spoke:
"Gu Han, let go."
The woman's eyelashes trembled. Her pupils were somewhat unfocused. She seemed to recognize him, and the force in her hands finally released. The palace servants easily pulled Miao Měirén out.
It was impossible to leave Gu Han there. Lu Yu's face was stern as he steeled himself and picked her up horizontally.
Lu Yu touched a handful of sticky wetness. The woman curled up in his arms. Probably from the severe pain, a tear fell from the corner of her eye, and in a very, very low voice:
"It hurts..."
Lu Yu had heard many women say it hurt. The concubines were pampered, if a needle even pricked their finger, they would cry out in pain. But Lu Yu had never felt his mood so heavy, to the point that his arms holding the woman even seemed to tremble.
The physician quickly arrived. She had protected Miao Měirén very well. Even falling from the high platform, Miao Měirén was unharmed, only suffering some shock that caused her to faint.
The physician took Gu Měirén's pulse with cold sweat dripping from his forehead. The Emperor sat at the side, his face stern and silent. The atmosphere in the side hall was particularly oppressive, with only Jiu Nian and Jiu Si's occasional sobs.
The Empress glanced at the Emperor's expression and didn't dare speak at this time.
The physician inserted needles to keep Gu Han somewhat conscious, but any touch made her pain severe. She didn't cry out in agony, only trembled throughout her body, biting her lips as tears slid from the corners of her eyes into her black hair. The entire process was silent, yet made people feel even more sympathetic.
The Empress Dowager had returned to her palace early. Upon learning the news, she specially had a matron relay a message:
"Gu Meiren's health must be cured."
A quarter-hour later, the physician finally released his hand, stepped back half a step, and said: "Reporting to Your Majesty, Měirén fell too hard on her back, injuring the bone. Combined with having caught a chill, fortunately there is no danger to her life, but she will need to recuperate for a period of time."
As the words fell, the eyes of many imperial consorts brightened slightly. Miao Měirén had woken early and now wore a complicated expression.
Lu Yu was very clear that for imperial consorts, time was of utmost importance. He glanced at the woman's deathly pale cheeks and asked in a deep voice:
"How long?"
The physician wiped cold sweat from his forehead: "At least three months."
Gu Han froze. She looked up at the Emperor, then paused. She closed her almond eyes and turned her head away with difficulty. Lu Yu saw very clearly that the moment she turned her head, she seemed to shed tears.
Lu Yu seemed able to perceive her emotions at this moment, panicked, helpless, and a trace of fear. No one knew what the situation would be after three months, but she hid from everyone, saying nothing.
Lu Yu didn't know if she regretted saving Miao Měirén. For her, this was simply a disaster for no reason.
Lu Yu's eyes darkened, feeling somewhat irritated:
"Use the best medicine. I do not wish to see any ailment in her health."
Gu Han felt extremely vexed in her heart, but she couldn't show it. Suddenly, she remembered the palace servant who had harmed Miao Měirén. Causing her such injuries, did the person behind this want to escape scot-free?
Gu Han turned her head with difficulty, seeming to want to get up. Lu Yu was faster than Jiu Nian, pressing down on her shoulder. Lu Yu lowered his eyes, looking at the woman: "If you have something to say, say it. Don't move around."
Gu Han bit her lip and said somewhat weakly:
"Miao Meiren's fall was no accident."
Lu Yu's eyes darkened. An uproar arose among everyone.
Gu Han, as if afraid he wouldn't believe her, said hoarsely: "Your concubine saw with her own eyes, a palace servant
stepped on the carpet, which is why Miao Měirén fell!"
As she moved, the wound on the back of her head that had just been bandaged seemed about to bleed again. He couldn't help scolding:
"Don't move!"
Someone deliberately plotting to harm an imperial heir was no small matter. The Empress immediately sent people to bring all the palace servants who had served in the hall today. With many people, it was inevitably noisy.
Lu Yu caught sight of the woman's furrowed delicate brows, paused, then withdrew his gaze and said coldly:
"Take them outside for interrogation."
Some people's eyes changed slightly. Consort Shu glanced between the Emperor and Gu Han, seeming to perceive something. She gripped her handkerchief almost imperceptibly, then looked up again. She covered her mouth and said charmingly: "What His Majesty said is correct. Having so many people enter the hall will only disturb Gu Meiren's peace."
At these words, everyone's expressions varied. Consort De said hesitantly:
"But among those present, only Gu Měirén knows who the palace servant who plotted to harm the imperial heir is. Without Miao Měirén's identification,"
Before she finished speaking, Lu Yu lifted his eyelids to look at her. Consort De suddenly fell silent. Where no one could see, Consort Shu discreetly curved the corner of her mouth.
The group finally didn't dare say anything more and all withdrew.
When leaving, Lu Yu raised his hand to touch the woman's cheek, saying calmly:
"You have merit in protecting the imperial heir. Rest easy and recover from your injuries."
His words seemed to have hidden meaning. Gu Han froze. When Lu Yu's figure disappeared from the hall, Gu Han still hadn't quite come to her senses. After a long while, she barely lowered her eyes, her eyelashes trembling lightly.
Jiu Nian didn't care what the Emperor's intention was. She wiped away tears, for the first time resenting her mistress:
"Everyone else only thought to get out of the way. Why did Mistress care about her, suffering this ordeal for nothing!"
She also mentioned Xia Qiao's attitude, clearly extremely angry.
Gu Han's eyes grew cold. She glanced around to ensure no one was present, then said softly:
"She fell toward me. With everyone watching, I couldn't dodge.”
