Chapter 9: Yan Lin Stands Up for Her
Chu Baihan hesitantly looked up, only to see a certain prince's cold and stern face.
He actually came.
"At my prince's residence, you dared oppose me. What now? Back at the Chu manor, you're this pathetic?" he mocked coldly.
Chu Baihan: "..."
A dog’s mouth can’t produce ivory—she would’ve been better off without his help.
At that moment, Chu Yu also caught up. Spoiled as always, she only ever did what she pleased, and thus completely ignored Yan Lin’s presence.
She raised her hand and lunged forward, sharp nails aiming for Chu Baihan’s face.
“Zi Ying.” Yan Lin had sharp hearing. The moment he sensed movement, his expression darkened further. His cold voice called out to Zi Ying.
Zi Ying immediately stepped in, drawing his sword and placing it against Chu Yu’s neck.
Only then did Chu Yu realize what was happening. She shrieked in terror and glared hatefully at him.
"Zi Ying, anyone who harms the princess consort…kill them." Yan Lin's voice was void of emotion, not caring one bit about who Chu Yu was.
Zi Ying, expressionless, was just about to strike.
"Stop!"
At that moment, Chu Hesheng and Madam Jiang arrived in a rush with servants in tow.
Chu Yu seized the opportunity, broke free, and ran behind Chu Hesheng. Unable to speak from fear, she stomped and cried, looking utterly pitiful.
"Chu Baihan! You actually wanted to hurt your sister? Did all your years in Jiangnan only teach you to be this vicious? Apologize to your sister, now!"
Without even asking what happened, Chu Hesheng lashed out at Chu Baihan, pinning all the blame on her.
Hearing this, Chu Baihan gave a faint smirk. She didn’t even care to explain.
After all, she’d lived this same scene eleven years ago.
Back then, if Chu Yu tattled, she was always at fault—and the one punished.
History was merely repeating itself now.
“General Chu, the world says I’m blind. But it seems you are blinder than I am; not only in sight but also in heart.”
Yan Lin’s cold and cutting words landed directly on Chu Hesheng.
Chu Baihan turned to look at him in shock. Was he... actually defending her?
Only then did Chu Hesheng seem to notice Yan Lin. His expression shifted slightly.
He narrowed his scheming eyes and carefully sized up Yan Lin, who stood beside Chu Baihan. No one knew what he was calculating inside.
After a long pause, he saluted calmly. “Your Highness, I didn’t expect you to visit the Chu residence today. That’s why I didn’t greet you properly. My apologies.”
“If you had greeted me earlier, General Chu, I wouldn’t have witnessed how your family treats the princess consort. What is this? You spoil your concubine-born daughter and oppress your legitimate one?” Yan Lin’s voice grew colder with each word.
He was a war god who led troops into battle at fifteen. The blood on his hands surely outweighed Chu Hesheng’s. His presence was soaked in the scent of blood. Now that he was furious, even the nearby servants looked ready to faint.
Chu Yu trembled with fear.
Only now did she realize—the man before her was *Prince Lin*.
Wasn’t he supposed to hate that wretched Chu Baihan? Wasn’t he not even going to take her back to his manor? Then what was going on?
*Father, save me,* she pleaded with her eyes.
Chu Hesheng’s gaze darkened, his expression grim.
After a long while, he forced a smile. “Your Highness may have misunderstood. This was merely a little squabble between two sisters. Nothing serious.”
“Han’er, don’t you think so? Your sister has always been gentle by nature. Surely you must have done something to upset her. Sisters don’t hold grudges, do they?” He glanced at Chu Baihan, his tone carrying an unspoken threat.
Same daughters, yet Chu Yu was his precious jewel while Chu Baihan was treated worse than a beggar.
Seeing her place in the Chu family so clearly, Chu Baihan felt a bitter amusement.
Chu Hesheng then glanced at Yan Lin and lowered his voice. “Your Highness, my second daughter has indeed been spoiled and deserves some discipline. But the Empress is fond of her and has summoned her to the palace soon. If anything happens to her, it’ll be hard to explain to Her Majesty. Wouldn’t you agree?”
He was... trying to use the Empress and Crown Prince to pressure Yan Lin?
Chu Baihan's breath hitched. No wonder Yan Lin hated the Chu family. Chu Hesheng was just a perfect lapdog for the Crown Prince and Empress!
She wondered how Yan Lin would respond.
At present, he held no official position. Though he had command over 100,000 troops, they were all handed off to other generals.
Meanwhile, the Crown Prince had endless influential supporters and tens of thousands of soldiers. Even the Chu family controlled 200,000 troops.
“Your Highness, allow me to handle this,” Chu Baihan suddenly tugged at his sleeve and stepped in front of him.
She didn’t want to drag anyone down with her.
Sensing her action, Yan Lin’s body stiffened slightly, emotions swirling in his usually hollow eyes.
After a long silence, he pulled her back behind him and said coldly to Chu Hesheng, “What if I *must* seek justice for the princess consort today?”
Chu Hesheng’s expression shifted. He hadn’t expected the powerless, crippled prince to be this defiant.
His smile faded. “Your Highness, if you—”
But before he could finish, Yan Lin commanded, “Zi Ying. The princess consort was hurt in her left arm. Cut the tendons in *her* left hand.”
A cold “Yes” responded.
Before anyone could react, Zi Ying struck. Blood poured from Chu Yu’s wrist.
She screamed in agony.
“Yu’er!”
Chu Hesheng and Madam Jiang cried out at once.
Madam Jiang cradled Chu Yu and wailed, “My Yu’er! My poor Yu’er!”
Chu Yu broke down. Her tendons were severed. She’d never play the zither again—her most treasured skill, her pride over all the noble girls in the capital.
Watching the mother and daughter sobbing in each other’s arms, Chu Hesheng’s eyes turned red with rage. His fists clenched. This was the daughter he had raised so carefully—ruined.
He turned with hatred blazing in his eyes, glaring at Yan Lin and Chu Baihan.
Zi Ying raised his sword defensively.
So... he *did* know how to care.
Same daughters; yet when Chu Yu was injured, he showed such grief.
Chu Baihan felt no fear, only a cold, lingering bitterness.
“Your Highness, what is the meaning of this?” Chu Hesheng gasped, seething with rage.
“She attacked the princess consort. That is a capital offense. But since she’s your daughter, I only severed the tendons in one hand. I already showed mercy,” Yan Lin replied coolly.
“You—!” Chu Hesheng’s eyes were filled with venom. He looked like he wanted to tear the three of them apart.
“If you have complaints, General Chu, feel free to report to the emperor. I’ll be waiting,” Yan Lin added sharply.
Chu Hesheng trembled with fury, his teeth clenched tight.
“Princess consort, let’s go. You’re still injured. If you die in the Chu household, General Chu might really be in trouble,” Yan Lin said as he looked down at her coldly.
Chu Baihan: “...” He really had a venomous tongue.
Her mind was still on Nanxing, but the poison took hold quickly. Her head spun, and she could only let Zi Ying help her and Yan Lin out of the Chu residence.
Chu Hesheng kept staring after them. Then he suddenly said in a strange tone, “Han’er, don’t forget what your father and Young Lord Su told you.”
Chu Baihan burned with rage.
Her “good” father—how truly “good” he was. Even as she left, he made sure to stir up trouble, planting doubts in Yan Lin’s mind.
