VOLUME 3: UNEXPECTED SOCIAL DEBUT

Chapter 18: Accusation

It seems I must attend the debut party in high society. Since Her Majesty the Queen wishes to meet me, there's no way to avoid it. The dress code for the party only allows for white dresses. In that case, I have no choice but to ask my father to have a new dress made for me. I head to my father's study and plead my case.

"Father, I'd like to have a dress made for my debut in high society."

"But didn't you receive a dress from the Filbachs?"

"That one—"

I didn't intend to cause a stir within the household, but I had reached my limit. I decided to expose Gizel's misdeeds right then and there. So, I confessed to my father.

"Gizel took it from me."

"What!? Is that true?"

"I'm not lying."

Father immediately ordered the butler to bring Gizel. Within moments, both Gizel and Eikov arrived.

"Gizel, what's the meaning of taking Elusia's dress!?"

"W-What are you talking about!? I didn't take Elusia's dress!"

In the next moment, Gizel started crying in an obvious manner. Instead, it was Eikov who began protesting.

"Gizel didn't take Elusia's dress. In fact, Elusia took the dress that was made for Gizel."

"What!?"

Father gave me an incredulous look.

"But that's not all. Gizel has been bullied by Elusia all this time. Gizel has been enduring it quietly because she's so kind-hearted."

A sly smile played on Gizel's lips, hidden behind her hands.

"As for evidence—"

Hera entered the room. In her hands was the dress.

"Here is Miss Gizel's dress."

She presented the torn dress with missing pearls that had been in my room.

"Elusia, what have you done!!"

Father ordered Hera to lash my back as punishment. It seemed he didn't believe my side of the story.

Afterward, I received thirty lashes from Hera. By the time it was over, my back felt like it was on fire from the pain.

"This dress suits you well."

With those words, Hera draped the torn dress over my shoulders.

It was the worst day of my life.

---

My back throbs sharply, making it hard to sleep. I think about asking the baker for some ointment... and then I drift off.

In my dream, I'm wearing a tattered dress. Everyone around me laughs, except for Klaus, who looks at me seriously.

I reach out to him and make one wish.

Just kill me—.

Death is the only peace for me.

He's the grim reaper who will lead me to happiness.

But Klaus doesn't take my hand. He just says, "Live," and walks away.

How cruel. I'm not asking him to marry me. But even in my dreams, I wish he would help me. Is that selfish?

...It's noisy around me. What on earth happened?

I slowly open my eyes.

"Dr. Jens, the patient has woken up!!"

"Oh, good."

I'm peered at by a man and woman in white coats. One is an elderly gentleman with a white beard and glasses. The other is a young woman, around twenty, with chestnut hair tied up. Who are they?

At the same time, I realize I'm under an unfamiliar ceiling and feel startled.

"Where am I?"

"You're at the Mimi Clinic in Central Street."

The woman with chestnut hair answers my question crisply. It seems she's a nurse. The elderly gentleman with glasses must be the doctor.

"Why am I here?"

"You were found collapsed outside by the baker, and he brought you in."

"I see..."

My vague memories gradually become clear. Even the day after the whipping, Hera mercilessly assigned me work. I couldn't focus on work because my back hurt, and I felt dizzy and faint. In the midst of it all, I was ordered to wash the sheets. It seems I passed out while doing so, in the midst of the sideways snowfall.

"Bacteria entered the wounds on your back, and you developed a fever. If you hadn't been found soon, your life would have been in danger."

"I see..."

I need to rest for a few days. Although I was told to take it easy, I couldn't afford to do so.

"I have things I must do."

"No, no, you're a patient, so rest comes first."

"But still—"

I have to prepare a dress for the debut party in high society. I need to mend the torn dress. Thanks to Hera draping it over my back, it's covered in blood. I need to wash it first, then repair the torn parts. There's no time to rest here. I try to get up, but the nurse restrains me.

"Dr. Jens, please give her some medicine. This young lady refuses to listen to reason."

"Understood."

I'm forced to take the medicine and fall asleep against my will."
