VOLUME 3: UNEXPECTED SOCIAL DEBUT
Chapter 23: Thoughts of Countess Korvitz
Finally, the day of the party arrived. Despite feeling heavy-hearted, the maids came rushing in from the morning, and I couldn't help but prepare. I was washed all over in the bath, had facial and hair packs applied, and my nails were polished. My hair was dried and carefully brushed. Perhaps because I hadn't slept well, I was told my face was swollen. A beautician was hastily summoned to improve my facial circulation. Reflected in the mirror, I resembled the daughter of Duke Schild from before my mother's death. It's unbelievable how much I've managed to recover in just ten days.
The legion of maids summoned by Countess Korvitz was too excellent. We took a short break at noon. When I said I had no appetite, they prepared oatmeal porridge for me. I couldn't eat much of it either, but it was better than nothing.
In the afternoon, I changed into the dress. The dress that Countess Korvitz had worked on until midnight was beautifully finished. The original dress was a size larger than me, but it was altered to fit, transforming into a modern shape that emphasized my figure. Graceful drapes, reminiscent of swans swimming on a quiet lake, were added, and lace was generously used on the hem and neckline. It was truly a beautiful dress. It was hard to believe it was the same dress I had seen ten days ago in such a sorry state. I planned to pair it with the emerald necklace, a memento from my mother, which I recently retrieved from the pawnshop. Although I borrowed a tiara made of pearls from the pawnshop, Countess Korvitz had an emerald tiara and earrings in her possession.
"I think this tiara will complement your necklace well, so I'll lend it to you."
"I can't possibly borrow such an expensive item."
"It's fine. It's been sleeping in the jewelry box for twenty years anyway. It's not modern, but I'd be happy if you used it."
"Countess Korvitz... Why are you being so kind to me when I have nothing to give in return?"
With a smile, Countess Korvitz placed the tiara on my head. It felt heavy, perhaps because it didn't suit me.
"The past few days with you have been very enjoyable. Consider it a thank-you?"
"A thank-you?"
"Yes, exactly. So you don't have to give anything in return. If anything, I'd even give you this tiara."
Countess Korvitz seemed to find my fluster amusing and started laughing out loud.
"Haha, how amusing. I hope a woman like you marries Klaus. Then, both of you would surely have fun every day."
"Is that so?"
"Of course. After not having fun for so many years, I'm feeling so happy now."
If you really want to get married, I'll lend you my full support," Countess Korvitz whispered in my ear. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Klaus as she dug his grave without him knowing.
"Lau-sama said that having a wife would become his weakness."
"Oh, that's not true. When you find someone important, you become even stronger than before. Both of you do. That child and you, you just don't realize it yet."
Countess Korvitz asserted confidently. It felt refreshing, as if the cloudy feelings inside me had cleared up.
"Eloise-san, do you dislike Klaus?"
"...No."
Despite feeling a bit intimidated, I couldn't dislike Klaus. He's straightforward and unwavering, even if he's a bit intimidating. And I did have feelings of longing for him as I sought his help.
"If you don't dislike him, then I want you to stay by his side forever. If things continue like this, he'll surely break."
Break... What does that mean exactly? Sensing my lack of understanding, Countess Korvitz continued.
"No matter how strong a sword is, it becomes dull if it's wielded continuously. It needs to be sharpened regularly. If it's wielded continuously while dull, eventually the sword becomes useless."
Ah—!
That must be referring to Klaus's mental state. She's probably trying to say that without someone by his side to support him, his limits will be reached early. Certainly, the future Klaus I saw in my dream was much more powerful than he is now. It might resemble a wounded wolf seen in a painting. A cornered beast is fierce and relentlessly bares its fangs. But such a state can't be sustained for years on end.
"I summoned that child because it's a rare opportunity. So please—"
Just as Countess Korvitz reached out to me, the butler entered the room. He seemed flustered. What on earth could it be?
"Why are you in such a hurry? What happened?"
"Um, just now, a fast horse arrived from the royal palace. Sir Klaus has been summoned by His Majesty the King."
It was an order for a new mission for the Iron Cavalry. In other words, Klaus couldn't accompany me to the party.
