VOLUME 3: BEGINNING OF THE ENGAGEMENT
Chapter 27: Peaceful Days at the Marquis Mansion
Dr. Yensh arrived for a house call and advised me to rest for a while.
Even though I insisted I was fine and wanted to work at Mimi Clinic, I was told it was not allowed.
"The most harmful part is your insistence that you're fine. You should spend some time leisurely drinking tea with the Marchioness Corvitz and enjoy yourself."
According to Dr. Yensh, my greatest ailment is my heart.
It seems no medicine can cure it, and only time will heal it, he said.
When I saw Yulia after ten days, she hugged me and promised to come play.
"Elusia, when you're feeling better, let's help Dr. Yensh together."
"Yes."
So, it seemed I had no choice but to stay quiet at the Corvitz Marquis Mansion for a while.
Since then, I've been experiencing unbelievably peaceful days.
Today, I took a short walk in the garden with the Marchioness Corvitz and was invited to a tea party in the sunroom.
In the warm sunlight pouring into the greenhouse, winter roses were blooming. It was such a beautiful space that it made me sigh.
There, I drank the tea the Marchioness Corvitz brewed.
I thought it was absurd for the Marchioness to brew tea for me, but it seemed to be her hobby. And it was delicious.
The cherry cake was a masterpiece of the head chef, they said.
Moist chocolate sponge with plenty of buttercream, topped with sugared cherries.
Although it looked sweet, it wasn't as sweet as it looked, and I ate it in one go.
"By the way, I was really surprised the day Klaus brought you back while still covered in blood."
"I apologize for causing concern."
Even though he asked to remove my dress to prevent it from getting dirty with blood, Klaus brought me back while still dressed.
"I thought he had brought back a corpse because the face part of the sheet was covered in blood."
Thanks to Klaus's consideration, I managed not to dirty my dress.
"More importantly, it's important to bring Elusia back without making her suffer."
I had apparently left the nose part exposed so I could breathe, but my breathing under the sheet was rough.
"I hurriedly called Dr. Yensh."
"I caused you a lot of trouble then."
"It's okay. You're like my granddaughter."
I was deeply moved by the warm words of the Marchioness Corvitz.
It had been a long time since I felt cherished by someone like this.
"I'd like to complain to that child again, but it seems he's busy."
"Yes."
After that, Klaus met with my father and apparently secured a marriage agreement.
My father protested against my not returning home, but when I explained how I was taken to Mimi Clinic, he seemed unable to say anything.
Even my father didn't think Klaus had beaten me so badly that scars would remain.
The incident started with the mother and daughter, Iyakobe and Jillke, but all the blame for the whipping was apparently shifted to Hera. She seems to have been fired.
"Elusia, don't worry about anything and live here in peace."
"Yes, thank you."
When asked if I should go get necessary items from my parents' house, most of my personal belongings had been taken.
About a month ago, I had a bad feeling, so I had all my diary entries about premonitory dreams burned.
There wasn't a single necessary item in that house.
Perhaps sensing this, the Marchioness Corvitz generously gave me dresses, hats, shoes, and more.
The dresses seemed to have been altered from ready-made ones and were all sophisticated and beautiful.
"Recently, my disciple Filbach has been popular, but I'm still good, right?"
"Yes, they're all really wonderful—Oh, was Filbach a disciple of the Marchioness Corvitz?"
"That's right."
It seems the Marchioness Corvitz hadn't taken a disciple for many years, but she was touched by Filbach's enthusiasm and became his mentor.
"He knows you."
"He was my mother's friend."
"I see. You and him seem to have a mysterious connection."
She said she would also make a wedding dress for me. She said it had been ten years since she had made one from scratch.
"Elusia, are you happy?"
"Yes, very."
Mother's teaching was to always accept gifts from others as they were all tokens of kindness. Refusing them out of modesty would be rude.
"Please don't push yourself too hard."
"That's right. It's difficult to stay up all night working like before."
However, she finished the debutante dress overnight. The Marchioness Corvitz seemed to be someone who worked hard quietly.
"Um, if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to help with the dressmaking."
"My, are you going to make dresses with me?"
The Marchioness Corvitz hugged me and was delighted, saying I was like a real granddaughter.
That evening, a letter arrived from Iyakobe. How did she know I was at the Corvitz Marquis Mansion?
It was a mystery. The letter was probably no good either.
I wanted to dispose of it, but I checked the contents just in case.
Written in worm-like handwriting was that Jillke, whose engagement was broken off, was feeling down. She selfishly wanted me to come back to cheer her up.
She probably called me out because she wanted to take her frustration out on me. It also mentioned that my father was lonely, but was that true?
It also said she wanted to celebrate the engagement, but it was shameless.
I sent a letter of refusal, saying I was busy preparing for the wedding.
