Lent Blessings 🤍
As we enter this Lenten season, may this be a time of reflection, renewal, and quiet strength. May our hearts grow softer, our faith deeper, and our hope stronger as we journey toward Easter.
165 For Big Brother's Happiness.
After that, Marguerite's attitude changed.
...She began treating Ortansia conspicuously coldly.
"Ortansia, I would like to entrust you with an important task today. Would that be all right?"
Seeing the malicious gleam in Marguerite's eyes, Ortansia felt a chill.
But she was employed by the Vérité ducal house.
Against Marguerite, a duke's daughter, she had no right of refusal.
"...Please command me as you wish, my lady."
"Thank you, Ortansia! Well then... could you wash my precious dresses beautifully?"
Saying this, Marguerite led Ortansia to the wardrobe.
"This one and this one... this too, please! Oh, and just to be safe, this as well!!"
Ortansia sorted through the dresses Marguerite indicated one after another.
With this quantity, it would be quite heavy labour.
"Right then, I'll call for help!"
Seeing the situation, Pamela naturally proposed this.
The Vérité ducal house had maids who primarily handled laundry, and it was normal to enlist their help for such tasks.
But at that moment, Marguerite's eyes flashed.
"No!"
At this unexpected prohibition, both Ortansia and Pamela were startled.
"These are my precious dresses! Absolutely not, I won't have them mixed with other laundry!"
Ortansia glanced sideways at Pamela.
Pamela's face was clearly bewildered, suggesting that even the wilful Marguerite didn't usually say such things.
"Ortansia, it's because I trust you that I want to leave this to you alone. You can do it, can't you?"
With a provocative smile, Marguerite said this.
...Clearly, she knew full well this was an unreasonable demand.
"But my lady, this quantity is impossible for Ortansia alone. We really should call for assistance…"
"Be quiet, Pamela! Will you not obey me!? ... Ortansia is 'excellent' enough to be favoured by my brother. This should be easy for her, shouldn't it?"
In a tone brooking no argument, Marguerite pressed this point.
The kind Pamela was about to open her mouth to try to dissuade Marguerite once more, but Ortansia spoke words of acceptance before she could.
"As you wish, my lady."
...If she resisted further, not only Ortansia but Pamela would be treated harshly as well.
She absolutely wanted to avoid that.
"Hehe, I knew you'd say that. I'm counting on you."
Leaving these words in high spirits, Marguerite departed, practically dragging Pamela along.
Left behind were only Ortansia and the mountain of dresses she'd been ordered to wash.
"...I've no choice but to do it."
She didn't think she could possibly complete the task Marguerite had set in a single day, but she couldn't abandon it either.
Failure was inevitable, but at least only Ortansia would be reprimanded.
‘...As long as Pamela isn't troubled, that's enough.’
Telling herself this, Ortansia set to work immediately.
---
She went to the laundry and began washing Marguerite's dresses with meticulous care.
The other maids present offered to "secretly help," but Ortansia firmly declined.
She wanted to avoid them being blamed if it were discovered.
Taking care not to damage the fabric, she handled the dresses carefully.
It was work requiring not only physical strength but mental fortitude.
The fortunate thing was that Marguerite possessed such an enormous number of dresses that most had barely been worn and had no conspicuous stains.
Even so, she couldn't cut corners.
Ortansia painstakingly cleaned the dresses, now heavily with absorbed water.
As she boiled large quantities of water for sterilization, she felt dizzy.
‘Not good, I can't collapse here…’
Despite feeling light-headed from the heat, Ortansia continued working, drenched in sweat.
She skipped lunch. She certainly wouldn't make dinner either.
Even so, she couldn't complain out
‘This is all for the VĂ©ritĂ© ducal house... for Brother's happiness…’
If Ortansia obeyed, perhaps Marguerite would improve her mood.
She didn't want to create friction between Gérard and Marguerite.
Much less could she bear being the cause of it.
‘It's all right. I can do my best even without Big Brother. I can do it, so…’
By the time she hung the washed dresses to dry, the sun had already set and evening darkness spread around her.
Relying on faint light, she hung the heavy dresses one by one.
‘I wonder if they'll dry by morning. Then I'll iron them…’
When she finished hanging the last one, perhaps she'd let herself relax,
"Ah…"
Ortansia’s body, having reached its limit of exhaustion, collapsed as if its strings had been cut.
Reflexively closing her eyes, bracing for impact with the ground, the pain never came.
"...What are you doing?"
When Ortansia opened her eyes, she saw Gerard looking down at her with a slightly anxious expression.
