173 Sudden Change

"Marguerite...!?"

At Marguerite's sudden appearance, Gérard cried out in surprise.

But Marguerite paid no heed to his voice, barging into the room.

Seeing Gérard and Ortansia in what looked like an embrace at close distance, Marguerite's eyes narrowed even more sharply.

"...So this is where you were, Ortansia."

"Miss, this is…"

"How dare you carry on like this right in front of me! You hussy!!"

Marguerite shrieked hysterically, then grabbed Ortansia's arm with great force and pulled, like she was tearing her away from Gérard.

Furthermore, Marguerite raised her arm high and struck Ortansia's cheek violently before she could say anything.

"Ngh...!"

"Stop it! Marguerite!!"

The pain and impact made Ortansia stagger, and Gérard frantically stepped between them.

But even so, Marguerite wouldn't stop.

"It was a mistake to let someone like you into this house! You...!"

"That's enough!"

Gérard shoved Marguerite away as she tried to strike Ortansia again.

Surely from Gérard's perspective, he had held back considerably.

After all, Marguerite had merely landed on her bottom behind her.

But she stared at the brother before her with wide eyes, as if she couldn't believe it.

"Brother...? Why are you protecting Ortansia? She's a devilish woman who's bewitched you, isn't she?"

"...The devil is you, Marguerite."

At Gérard's words, Marguerite gasped.

"Wh-what are you saying, Brother..."

"Did you think I knew nothing?"

At Gérard's words, at his cold eyes, and most of all at the intensity directed at her... Marguerite must have realised that Gérard had discovered her punishment of Ortansia.

"I-I was merely disciplining Ortansia! She's a shameless woman who seduces you, right!? She must be doing the same thing with other men! You're being deceived, Brother!!"

Gérard looked down at the shrieking Marguerite with cold eyes.

"I was only trying to correct Ortansia's rotten nature! For your sake... I did it for you, Brother! I'm not in the wrong! It's all Ortansia's fault!!"

Whilst glaring at Ortansia, Marguerite continued to declare this.

At such behaviour from his sister, Gérard spoke in a chillingly cold voice.

“...Marguerite. Until now, I had turned a blind eye to your excessive selfishness. That’s because, even though you usually behave like that, I thought that deep down you still had pride as a member of the Duke of Verite family. However…”

Pausing once, Gérard glanced back at Hortensia behind him.

"What you've done to Ortansia is unforgivable, no matter what excuses you make. First, as heir to the Vérité ducal house, I cannot acknowledge someone like you as a member of the Vérité family. Be prepared that when I become head of the family, I won't hesitate to disown you."

"...!"

At Gérard's harsh words, Marguerite's face paled all at once.

"And this... these are my words as Gérard."

"Brother..."

Marguerite turned pleading eyes towards Gérard.

But Gérard spoke as if cutting through that gaze.

"Ortansia is the first person I've ever loved. You have unreasonably hurt such a person, and to top it off, you have cursed her with words that are unbearable to hear... I despise you.”

"...!"

Marguerite continued to stare at Gérard with a blank expression.

"...Why? Why would you say such things? I'm your sister. I'm supposed to be a precious family member, right? So why would you protect some commoner woman over me?"

...Even after all this, Marguerite didn't understand.

In a sense, she might be the possessor of truly aristocratic thinking.

Marguerite was a noble young lady of high birth, and Ortansia was a commoner's daughter from an orphanage.

At any time and under any circumstances, she believed without doubt that she was more valuable than Ortansia.

But Gérard was different.

He clenched his fists as if suppressing his rage, and declared coldly.

"No matter how related we are by blood, I don't consider you my sister since you hurt Ortansia.”

"...!"

Marguerite and Ortansia gasped simultaneously.

…"Silence, you disgrace to the ducal house. ...Not once have I ever thought of you as my sister."

The words Gérard had said to her in her first life came back to her mind.

The despair Ortansia had felt then was what Marguerite was experiencing right now.

"...Why..."

Marguerite muttered in a dry voice.

"Why, why, why..."

Like a broken doll, Marguerite simply repeated this over and over.

...Perhaps her heart was on the verge of breaking.

"Miss..."

"Leave her be."

Gérard stopped Ortansia as she tried to call out.

"More importantly, proper treatment comes first. We're going to the infirmary."

Saying this, just as GĂ©rard was about to lift Ortansia…

"WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!"

A piercing scream loud enough to burst eardrums echoed throughout the room, and simultaneously they were assaulted by a tremendous impact.
