CHAPTER 47: The illusory Realm of Water and Clouds (III)
The youth in the darkness, his long hair blending into the night, gazed at her for a long time. Finally, his frozen stare broke. He looked down at the locks scattered across the ground, and the dark mist swirling in his eyes began to dissipate.
After a moment, he lowered his head and pulled the young woman into his arms.
As he breathed in her scent, a fragrance that always brought him peace, the overwhelming demonic energy filling the air slowly receded. Like a large, affectionate hound, he nuzzled his face against her cheek.
There was no cage here, no endless darkness, only the comforting scent of her skin.
She patted him gently, her voice a soft murmur. "Yanyan, I am here."
The last trace of darkness vanished from his eyes.
They held each other in silence for a while.
In a place she could not see, the eyes of this lawless Great Demon curved into the shape of phoenix wings, hiding a frantic, paranoid possessiveness. He leaned in, his voice nearly a whisper. "Suisui, I cannot wait any longer."
"Do not make me wait a month, let it be now, alright?"
She was so good, he never wanted to leave her side.
He gripped her with intense possessiveness, holding her so tightly it felt as though he wanted to embed her into his very body. Like a man trapped in eternal night who had finally caught a beam of light, he refused to let go, even if it meant death.
She let out a soft sigh in her heart, turned her head, and pressed a light kiss to his cheek, a touch as fleeting as a dragonfly skimming the water.
The volatile youth was instantly soothed by that gentle kiss.
Guang Ping, who had been pretending to be invisible nearby, finally couldn't help but let out a dry cough. "What should we do with these children?" he asked.
The cages were open now, but the little half-demons inside remained dazed. They looked lost and helpless, as if they didn't understand what had happened, huddled motionless within the iron bars.
"The situation in the Water-Cloud Realm is unknown," Guang Ping continued. "There are too many of these children. If we let the Changming Sect disciples transport them into the illusory Realm, it will be difficult to protect them. It would be better to let them go now."
Chao Jinsui thought for a moment. "I can use an illusion to temporarily mask their absence, it shouldn't be a problem."
Taking Yan Xueyi by the hand, she walked toward the cages.
She approached the oldest-looking half-demon and unlatched the door.
"Can you understand me? The cage is open. Take the younger ones and slip out through the back gate. The main street is just outside. Run forward and do not look back. Run as far as you can."
However, even though the little half-demon clearly understood her, he immediately shrank back. He glared at her with extreme wariness, even baring his teeth in a snarl.
Her usually persuasive and calm tone seemed to have lost its effectiveness. None of the children were willing to come out.
Just as she was about to pull out some sweets,
Yan Xueyi reached out and hoisted the little half-demon up with one hand. Billowing Karmic Fire erupted from his palm, instantly melting the metal cage into liquid.
The child’s face twisted in terror.
Yan Xueyi tossed him aside and spoke coldly. "Get lost, or I shall slaughter you all!"
As soon as the words left his lips, the children who had been paralyzed with fear scrambled out of the cages.
Chao Jinsui was speechless.
They vied with one another to flee into the night.
The Great Demon barked, "Be silent! If anyone makes a sound, I will kill them!"
The group of little half-demons was scared out of their wits. Like spirits being chased by a ghost, they vanished into the darkness in the blink of an eye.
Chao Jinsui looked down at the sweets in her hand and felt a bit like a fool.
No one understood the hearts of these half-demons better than the Great Demon. They had endured inhuman treatment for far too long. If someone treated them with kindness, their first instinct was suspicion, a fear of a hidden trap. Gaining their trust would have been an arduous task.
It was far more efficient to simply terrify them into obedience.
"I will go and see them off," she said.
But the Great Demon stopped her.
"Half-demons are still part of the Demon Race. No matter how small, they are not entirely helpless."
He looked toward the darkness. "No one can save them, they can only save themselves. Do not give them false hope."
The only reason the young demon of the past had survived until today was because he had never dared to hope for a savior. Only by gritting one's teeth and enduring could one survive. The survival laws of the Demon Race were cruel, and the plight of half-demons was even more precarious.
She watched as the group of children disappeared into the dark in the distance. Only after confirming they had left safely did she withdraw her gaze.
Next, they had to wait for the transport to Water-Cloud Realm.
She held her breath, suppressing her presence, and hid in the shadows alongside the Great Demon and Guang Ping.
After a long while, the butler arrived with a large group of demons.
The children in the cages had all been replaced by stones via illusion. These half-demons were usually half-dead anyway, so the demons weren't surprised that they weren't moving. They were too lazy to check if the children were even breathing. Thus, the simple trick went completely unnoticed.
The butler barked orders. "Move faster! We must reach the Illusory Realm of Water and Cloud before dawn. Who gave you permission to dawdle?"
Under the butler's harsh rebukes, they escorted the wagons of cages out of the Flower Street through the back gate. The caravan traveled through the dense, tangled forest, twisting and turning until they finally reached a heavily guarded valley.
A massive barrier loomed in the air.
The convoy was stopped at the entrance. One demon lifted a cover to inspect a cage, his gaze sweeping over the disguised Chao Jinsui and Yan Xueyi. His eyes eventually landed on the figure beside them, and he asked suspiciously, "Why is there a little bald one?"
Guang Ping remained silent.
The butler took a glance. "His hair fell out. That is why they are called defective products, he went bald at such a young age."
Guang Ping’s face darkened instantly. This monk merely shaved his head, I am not bald!
The guards didn't look any closer and allowed them through.
Once they entered the valley's barrier, they could see the illusion of the Water-Cloud Realm manifesting in the sky, appearing like a grand mirage. It hovered in mid-air, surrounded by demons of the Changming Sect. Sentries were posted at every third and fifth step, and patrolling squads moved back and forth. The security was tight.
The three people and one snake slipped silently out of their cages and appeared within the dense woods.
Tonight had been unexpectedly smooth. Perhaps because the Changming Sect had acted as the local tyrant in Heavenly Gift Manor for so long, the management’s vigilance had grown dull.
But then again, when the entire sect had spent their time acting as male escorts in a brothel, how much competence could one really expect?
Chao Jinsui looked at the Water-Cloud Realm illusion from a distance and finally understood why people said it was about to vanish.
From the outside, Water-Cloud Realm looked like a miniature, hemispherical world. Inside that world stood a colossal tree, its canopy nearly veiling the entire illusion. There were mountains, forests, vast plains, and emerald lakes. Countless tiny black dots moved within, though she couldn't tell if they were the original inhabitants or the children thrown in by the Changming Sect.
Despite being such a vibrant and beautiful world, its sky was cracking. Transparent shards were falling slowly but incessantly. As each shard fell and dissipated into the atmosphere, a piece of Water-Cloud Realm was lost forever.
"No wonder Chao Taichu is so confident he can just close the Realm at will."
Because the state of the illusory Realm was truly dire, Chao Jinsui thought for a moment and whispered a few words to Yan Xueyi. She intended to keep a trump card in reserve.
The Great Demon narrowed his eyes and signaled for Guang Ping to head out for a moment.
Finally, after dawn broke, voices began to rise from below.
After many days, Chao Jinsui finally saw Chao Taichu again.
He had lost an arm, and after hearing the news of Chao Xiaotu’s death, his once dark hair was now shot through with white. However, despite his weathered appearance, the moment she saw him, she realized something significant.
Chao Taichu had broken through!
His strength had reached the Great Circle of the Nascent Soul stage. Furthermore, there was an indescribable aura about him that made him seem worlds apart from before. His mere presence exerted a powerful pressure.
Following him, the brothers Nie Shui and Nie Sheng appeared, with a trail of Changming Sect demons behind them.
Chao Taichu’s attitude toward Nie Shui was significantly more respectful. "Eldest Young Master, where is Nie Chun?"
Nie Shui, whom Chao Taichu addressed as Eldest Young Master, was much more handsome than his younger brother.
He frowned and questioned the butler before replying, "That brat hasn't woken up yet. Ignore him! Look at the sorry state of Water-Cloud Realm, it makes no difference whether he is here or not."
Chao Taichu agreed. "In that case, let us not waste time. Begin."
Nie Shui clapped his hands.
A massive array began to faintly appear before them. The center of the array was pointed directly at the Water-Cloud illusion Realm. Once this array was activated, Water-Cloud Realm would be instantly destroyed.
From her perch in the trees, Chao Jinsui observed the crowd below. Her gaze eventually fixed on Nie Shui. "His strength is decent."
Nie Shui and Nie Chun were on entirely different levels.
The Great Demon chuckled softly. "Nie Hai’s eldest son was once the Crown Prince of the Demon Realm, after all."
His eyes shifted to Chao Taichu, his phoenix eyes narrowing. "Has this old dog stumbled upon some fortuitous encounter?"
The Great Demon looked around, then leaned toward her ear, his voice carrying a wicked provocation. "What is the matter? Are you afraid of your father? Do you lack the courage to strike?"
Chao Jinsui shot the demon a look, drew her Kunlun Sword, and flicked the tip of the blade.
She hadn't been afraid when she fought her way out of the Kunlun Sword Sect, so with a Great Demon by her side now, what was there to fear?
She pushed off with her toes and dived toward the ground below!
He gave a soft click of his tongue and followed after her.
Just as Chao Taichu was about to activate the array, he heard a slight movement and suddenly barked, "Who is there?!"
In the next instant, a familiar figure appeared. She walked out from the dense forest.
It was Chao Jinsui.
Seeing his daughter again, a flash of shock crossed Chao Taichu’s face before his expression turned hideously dark. "You aren't hiding in the Demon Realm? What are you doing here?"
She smiled thinly. "Father, since you are no longer hiding like a turtle inside the Kunlun Sword Sect’s protective array, I figured I shouldn't embarrass you by hiding either, should I?"
These words caused Chao Taichu’s face to cloud over instantly. Likely reminded of the pain of his severed arm, his features twisted into a mask of rage.
Chao Jinsui took a moment to appreciate his distorted expression. The fact that Chao Taichu dared to leave the safety of his sect's array proved he was indeed very confident in his new strength. Had he truly found some miraculous encounter?
It was just as well. She wanted to test his current capabilities.
She looked toward the illusory Realm. "Father, tell me, what precious treasure is hidden inside Water-Cloud Realm that makes you so obsessed? Why must you insist on destroying it?"
Upon hearing her mention Water-Cloud Realm, Chao Taichu’s face turned ashen. He cut her off brutally. "That has nothing to do with you!"
"Nothing to do with me?" Chao Jinsui countered. "Chao Zhaoyue is still inside."
She flicked her sword again, watching the emotions play across his face, and let out a soft laugh. "Father. Everything you try to cover up is exactly what I wish to know."
In the next second, she moved.
With a light tap of her toes, she lunged toward Chao Taichu!
The Kunlun Sword whistled through the air, clashing violently against Chao Taichu’s Sword. The sound of ringing steel echoed. Upon the first exchange, she realized that his strength had improved tremendously. It didn't feel like someone who had just entered the Great Circle of Nascent Soul. There was no instability from a sudden breakthrough, instead, his aura was exceptionally steady.
Chao Taichu realized it too. "You have advanced."
A cold sneer touched his lips. "Unfortunately, your greatest mistake was choosing this moment to come to my door!"
Chao Taichu’s aura exploded. His sword qi surged forward like a roaring flood, carrying the sound of crashing thunder. Chao Jinsui, agile as a sparrow, retreated several steps.
To the side, Nie Shui sneered. "Where did this insignificant pest come from, daring to cause trouble on my territory!"
He transformed into a cloud of black mist, lunging toward Chao Jinsui’s back with a clawed hand. But in the next moment, Nie Shui was snatched back by another mass of black energy!
Nie Shui’s strength was considerable. As the most favored son of Nie Hai, he was not to be underestimated. However, he was struck heavily by a palm and immediately clutched his chest.
A familiar youth appeared before Nie Shui.
With his beautiful phoenix eyes narrowed, his long hair, and his broken demon horn, Nie Shui instantly remembered the days he had fled the Demon Realm like a stray dog.
Nie Shui gritted his teeth. "Yan. Xue. Yi!"
Unlike Nie Chun’s pure terror, Nie Shui’s shock was quickly replaced by explosive rage. The demon let out a roar. "Nie Sheng! Come quickly! This is the beast who killed our father!"
The debt of a murdered father could not be settled under the same sky.
Now that he faced his nemesis, Nie Shui’s demonic energy surged violently. He and Nie Sheng pounced forward in a pincer attack.
Yan Xueyi gave a casual click of his tongue. A golden chain manifested around his slender fingers. This was something he had discovered by chance while practicing the Mind Clearing Manual. When he wasn't lost in madness, it was quite useful for whipping other demons.
The golden whip lashed out, sending Nie Sheng flying half a mile away.
The Great Demon swung the whip casually. "Who are you calling a beast?"
Nie Shui roared, "The beast is you!"
The Great Demon sighed. "How truly stupid."
Nie Shui realized the verbal trap and roared at his subordinates, "What are you all standing around for? Attack together!"
The demons of Changming Mountain swarmed forward. The whip in the Great Demon's hand elongated, lashing out at the crowd of demons with terrifying force.
Hearing the commotion on the other side, Chao Taichu paused, his heart filled with shock and fury. "The Demon Lord? You have actually entangled yourself with the Demon Lord?!"
She smiled. "You are colluding with the sons of the former Demon Lord, and I am acquainted with the current one. This is simply following in the footsteps of our fathers."
Chao Taichu was turned livid by her sarcasm. His sword wind swept toward her. "Today, within the time it takes for a stick of incense to burn, I shall teach you the proper way to live, you unfilial daughter!"
While Yan Xueyi was occupied by Nie Shui, this was his best chance to kill her!
His sword moves were broad and powerful, his strength incredibly overbearing. With each strike came the sound of wind and thunder. Compared to their last encounter, his power was on an entirely different level.
Chao Taichu believed that with his soaring strength, killing her would be easy. He held nothing back. In his mind, Chao Jinsui should have been in constant retreat.
But he hadn't expected that she had already mastered the first four levels of the Kunlun Sword Manual. Her strength was far beyond that of an ordinary mid-stage Nascent Soul cultivator. Her swordplay was as smooth as flowing water, carrying the refined air of a true sword master. For a time, he could gain no advantage.
Chao Taichu pulled back his sword, his dark eyes glaring at his daughter. Faint bolts of lightning crackled along the blade of the Taichu Sword. A cold sneer touched his lips, and a murderous intent flashed in his eyes.
In the next second, the lightning on the Taichu Sword surged forward like a nest of thunderous vipers, lunging at her with lightning speed! He intended to end it with a single killing blow.
However, the Kunlun Sword in Chao Jinsui’s hand flickered. The blade condensed into a layer of freezing frost, lunging toward the lightning vipers. Thunder and ice collided on the ground with a deafening explosion.
Chao Jinsui’s ears twitched.
From behind her, another bolt of lightning surged. A sneak attack from Chao Taichu!
She dodged quickly, but she was still struck across the back by a fierce lash of energy. Chao Taichu’s eyes brightened with anticipation.
Unfortunately for him, Chao Jinsui was protected by the Golden Bell. Though she had to endure a surge of sharp pain, she merely retreated a few steps, steadying herself.
Chao Taichu was profoundly disappointed.
Chao Jinsui suppressed the pain and wiped a trace of blood from the corner of her mouth. Chao Taichu wasn't using the techniques of the Kunlun Sword Sect at all! His strength had also increased to an unreasonable degree in a short amount of time. Previously, he would never have been able to execute such powerful sword moves.
She stopped trying to draw out the fight. She leapt into the air, and just as Chao Taichu thought she was going to charge at him, her body twisted mid-air. The Kunlun Sword erupted with a burst of golden light, stabbing directly into the heart of the array!
Chao Taichu’s face changed dramatically. The Taichu Sword let out a hum, and lightning vipers whistled toward her.
Chao Jinsui’s strike hit its mark. She immediately withdrew her sword and swung it back in a swift arc, blocking the lightning. Her hand went momentarily numb from the impact.
She raised her eyes and leveled her sword. "Teach me the proper way to live within the time it takes for an incense stick to burn?"
"To be as despicable and shameless as you?"
Her sword qi kicked up a wave of frost, resembling a collapsing snow mountain as it surged toward Chao Taichu. He was forced back several steps.
Chao Jinsui stood tall, looking at him coldly. "To be a beast like you, who can even kill his own children? I think I shall pass on that lesson. I prefer being human. I have no desire to be a beast."
How could she speak to her father like this! There was not a shred of respect left in her. She was a completely different person from the child who used to chase after him calling "Father" years ago.
Chao Taichu was shocked and enraged. But he seemed to have forgotten that she had long ago severed their bonds by cutting her hair. In her heart, he was no longer her father.
He realized he wouldn't be able to kill her today. Glancing at the Demon Lord nearby, the old fox chose not to linger. He glared at her one last time before the Taichu Sword rose into the air, carrying its master away into the depths of the forest.
At that moment, a wretched scream rang out.
In the area where the demons were gathered, the ground was covered in massive craters. They were all the result of the Great Demon pummeling Nie Shui.
Nie Shui had fallen into a state of frenzy. Demons were naturally unstable, and his demonic energy was surging out of control. His roars sounded like those of a mindless beast. "Go to hell!"
In the next second, a massive skeletal head whistled through the air and slammed into Nie Shui’s chest. He let out a piercing scream as his body disintegrated into a mist of blood.
After a brief moment of silence.
A lingering wisp of Nie Shui’s black energy suddenly shot out, lunging toward the Water-Cloud illusion Realm. As the son of Nie Hai, how could he not have some life-saving trick? As long as he escaped into the illusion, he would have a chance at life.
But that roaring black mist was suddenly snatched by a slender, elegant hand.
Nie Shui was forcibly dragged out of Water-Cloud Realm, letting out a cry of agony.
In the next second, Chao Jinsui noticed that the collapse of the illusion Realm was accelerating.
"Yanyan! Water-Cloud Realm is collapsing!"
Even though they had stopped Chao Taichu from closing it, the Realm was already in a fragile state.
Nie Shui let out a mad laugh. "This broken Realm was going to fall anyway. It would have collapsed within half a month regardless. So what if you kill me? You'll still…"
In the next instant, Nie Shui’s head was crushed. Quite literally.
The Great Demon muttered, "So what if I kill you? Killing you makes me feel much better."
He tossed aside Nie Shui’s corpse and walked to the entrance of Water-Cloud Realm. The collapse of a Realm was essentially the dissipation of the energy maintaining it.
He tried to pour demonic energy into the gaps of the world, and Chao Jinsui attempted to inject her spiritual energy to stabilize it. At first, it seemed to work, but it was merely an illusion born of hope. Water-Cloud Realm began to crumble even faster.
She saw the countless tiny dots within that miniature world scurrying about in terror. Sweat beaded on her forehead.
She thought of the Heaven-Mending Stone and asked the system urgently, "Will the Heaven-Mending Stone work? Is there a way to temporarily stabilize Water-Cloud Realm?!"
The System replied, "The Heaven-Mending Stone would definitely work, but it is too late!"
It was true. Water-Cloud Realm was crumbling before their eyes.
The Great Demon, who had been staring at the Realm in silence for a long time, suddenly spoke. "The Asura Path."
Chao Jinsui turned to look at him.
The youth lowered his head and said to her, "The Asura Path can reverse life and death. It can even briefly turn back time."
He knew she wanted to save Chao Zhaoyue.
Chao Jinsui knew that the Asura Path was the exclusive domain of a Demon God. She also knew that "life and death" and "time" were the realms of gods. For a Demon Lord who had not yet fully ascended to being a god, the backlash would be immense.
In the next second, she froze.
It was just like when they were children. Every time she faced an impossible problem, Chao Zhaoyue would always find a way to resolve it effortlessly.
She smiled. "Yanyan, there is no need. Look."
They raised their heads together and looked into that miniature, collapsing world.
Within the fracturing Water-Cloud Realm, a familiar, massive sword appeared.
It was the Lanyue Sword!
The sword continued to grow, expanding and swelling until it finally braced itself against the collapsing sky and the earth below.
Thus, the shattering sky of Water-Cloud Realm truly ceased its terrifying descent.
It was Chao Zhaoyue.
He needed no savior. The Lanyue Sword was enough to hold up the heavens and the earth.
