176: A World Where Impossible Dreams Come True

"Gah!"

It happened so quickly that Ortansia couldn't even process what had occurred.

By the time she realized, this world's Gérard had been sent flying and slammed hard into the floor.

"Lord Gérard...!"

"Leave him."

The original Gérard stopped Ortansia as she tried to run forward.

He cast a cold glance down at this world's Gérard, who was still glaring up at them despite everything, and spoke with cutting disdain:

"Someone as weak as you could never protect Ortansia."

"Damn you...!"

This world's Gérard's face twisted with frustration.

The original Gérard turned away from his other self as though he'd lost all interest, facing Ortansia once more.

"Everyone's waiting for you. Let's get out of here."

With those words, he reached for Ortansia's hand.

But just then, a voice rang out from Marguerite, who had been silently watching everything unfold until now.

"...Incredible! How incredible!"

Ortansia, who'd been so preoccupied with the two Gérards that she'd forgotten Marguerite's existence entirely, jumped in shock.

Gérard turned towards Marguerite with obvious irritation.

"Oh, how could I not have seen it? The reason my brother didn't love me most of all was because he wasn't the real one! That's it, isn't it?!"

Marguerite was smiling radiantly now, her earlier frenzy seeming like a distant lie.

She scurried over to the original Gérard and gazed up at him with shining eyes.

"I can tell! You're the real one... my true brother, aren't you?!"

At those words, Ortansia's heart gave an unpleasant lurch.

Reflexively, she checked the original Gérard's reaction.

He wore his usual expressionless face, looking down at Marguerite as though she were nothing more than a stone by the roadside.

Then, slowly, he opened his mouth.

"I've no idea who you are."

For a moment, Marguerite's expression froze at Gérard's utterly dismissive words, as though she'd been caught off guard.

But she quickly rallied, crying out loudly:

"I'm Marguerite! The only daughter of House Vérité! I'm the one you should truly love!"

At Marguerite's words, Gérard's eyes narrowed slightly.

"I see..."

Gérard's hand moved to his sword once more.

His entire being radiated such intensity that even Ortansia found herself shrinking back.

"So you're the 'core' of this world."

He glared at Marguerite with eyes that looked upon a mortal enemy.

Even Marguerite seemed to falter before such force, stepping backwards.

"W-why...? Here, you wouldn't have to suffer. It's a world where you're loved by your family and can live happily ever after! So why would you try to destroy it?!"

Marguerite spoke as though trying to shake Gérard's resolve.

But it seemed not to touch him in the slightest.

"Ridiculous. I've no interest in such illusions."

In the next moment, he moved. Ortansia had no time to stop him.

In an instant, Gérard's blade cut through Marguerite's body.

Ortansia screamed, anticipating a spray of blood from Marguerite's pale skin.

But something far more unexpected happened instead.

"What?!"

Like a nesting doll, something else emerged from inside Marguerite.

Everything was so utterly incomprehensible that Ortansia couldn't tell whether this was a dream or reality.

But Gérard showed no surprise, shielding Ortansia behind him.

"Just as I thought. There you are."

Gérard muttered towards whatever was inside Marguerite, his voice laced with hostility.

"Brother, what is that...?"

"The root cause of your imprisonment in this world."

"What...?!"

"It trapped you here, weakened you, exhausted your spirit to the breaking point, and then it intended to consume you."

Gérard pointed his blade towards the "something."

"A demon daring to play such cunning tricks..."

At those words, the "something" that had emerged from Marguerite rose languidly.

It took the form of a woman so breathtakingly beautiful it stole one's breath away.

‘A demon was inside Marguerite...?’

Despite having spent years alongside Lucien as a living example, Ortansia had still half-thought of demons as beings from ancient tales.

But that wasn't the main matter at all.

If what Gérard said was true, this demon had interfered with Ortansia, influenced her.

The demon showed no fear of Gérard's bloodlust, smiling seductively.

"As expected of the legendary demon slayer. How perceptive you are."

Each time she smiled, Ortansia was assailed by terrible drowsiness and felt herself swaying.

But Gérard showed not the slightest waver.

"Spare me your prattle. Disappear."

"My, how cold you are. And after I went to such trouble to entertain your precious little sister."

The moment the demon mentioned Ortansia, the bloodlust emanating from Gérard sharpened markedly.

"...You've got some nerve."

"You misunderstand me. The dreams I offer aren't all terrible things, you know."

The demon turned her gaze towards Ortansia.

Ortansia's shoulders jumped involuntarily, but the demon smiled reassuringly.

"You understand, don't you, Ortansia? This is a world where happy dreams that could never come true in the original world become reality. Everything your brother lost exists here as though it were the most natural thing."

The demon's words stirred something in Ortansia's heart.

The harmonious Duke and Duchess, Gérard's real sister, the warm family gatherings that symbolized happiness...

Images of what she'd witnessed in this world—things that could never have existed in the original—flashed through her mind.

...Even Ortansia knew that these were the very things Gérard had been searching for.

"I'm sorry 'Marguerite' was so horrid to you. I made her personality a touch too wilful, it seems. ...Oh, I know! Next time, I'll place you as a noble lady somewhere. That way, things should go much better."

The demon spoke gleefully, and Ortansia felt a chill run through her.
