Chapter 61: Journey to Jade Sword Mountain (Part IV)

The torrential rain finally ceased, giving way to a clear sky. The crisp chirping of a bird or two at dawn shattered the lingering silence.

"Lecherous," she muttered.

The demon couldn't help but let out a low, muffled chuckle.

"Shameless," she added.

At that, his laughter grew even louder. His stomach even began to ache from the mirth, yet he still insisted on leaning his head against hers.

"..."

She threw her pillow at him, stood up, and went to bathe.

The demon moved to follow her, but she paused in her tracks, shot him a fierce glare, and slammed the wooden door shut.

Turning around, however, she spotted the demon lord leaning against a roof beam, arms crossed as he watched her with leisurely interest. He looked up at the ceiling with an air of feigned nonchalance. "I am merely checking if the roof leaks."

Chao Jinsui: "..."

Why is it that even if a calico cat likes a big dog, it still feels the need to swat it away with a claw? Because dogs are the natural enemy of cats.

Exiled from the room, the demon lord wasn't angry in the slightest. Instead, the corners of his mouth curled upward.

Listening to the sound of splashing water, he plucked Little Eye from the doorway where it had been standing guard and gave its head a gentle, smiling stroke.

A shiver ran through Little Eye’s entire body. If a flood dragon serpent had fur, it certainly would have stood on end.

The demon lord glanced at it, his mood remarkably bright. "Naughty."

Little Eye was utterly terrified.

It was more frightened now than when it had encountered the mentally unstable Demon Lord not long ago. It immediately struggled out of its master’s hand and slithered away.

Recently, due to the blood sacrifice, the demon’s temper had been exceptionally foul and his mental state precarious. Yet today, his gloom had vanished, replaced by a radiance so sunny it was almost eerie.

When he spotted Chao Zhaoyue, he even greeted him naturally. "Morning, big brother."

Chao Zhaoyue: “??”

“Who is your big brother?”

Initially, Chao Zhaoyue truly couldn't stand the demon who had set his sights on his sister. However, after witnessing how soul-crushed Jinsui had been during their separation at Frozen Frost Valley, he had begun to convince himself to accept the situation.

He rarely saw the usually calm Jinsui in such a state. She had been like a little adult since childhood, and as she grew, her personality became even more serene. He had never seen her display such raw emotion.

Chao Zhaoyue thought helplessly: As long as she likes it and she is happy, that is enough.

However, having seen too many people meet a dead end because of love, with Su Liuyun and Chao Xiaotu as cautionary tales, Chao Zhaoyue remained wary.

That was, until he realized that the one whose head was filled with nothing but romance and lacked any semblance of sobriety was actually the demon lord.

Chao Zhaoyue: I worried for nothing.

He had been terrified that his sister would become like Chao Xiaotu, seeking life or death over a relationship. If that happened, he wouldn't be able to stop himself from fighting the demon to the death.

Instead, he found that the one seeking life and death, feigning illness, and acting as if his heart were breaking was the demon lord himself.

Chao Zhaoyue: ...

He was completely at ease now. As long as it wasn't his sister being tormented, he would applaud and support whomever his sister chose to ruin.

During breakfast, he didn't see the demon lord and asked her, "Jinsui, where is that little wife of yours?"

Chao Jinsui: "..."

The " little wife" had returned to the mountain where the blood sacrifice had occurred.

The forest fire had been extinguished by the rain, leaving the entire mountain a blackened waste. With a wave of his hand, the great demon lord destroyed the statues of the demon gods.

He stepped onto the sacrificial altar, now reduced to ash. His boots crushed the soot as his expression turned grim. While he had indeed utilized the blood sacrifice for his own ends, it did not mean he would allow others to use him to harm his beloved.

Mysterious and sinister script appeared in the patterns on the altar. Closing his eyes, he felt the traces of the formation, tracking a faint, nearly imperceptible aura hidden amidst the scent of blood.

The demon lord returned to the courtyard and found her. "Come, I will take you somewhere."

To wish you can make a sacrifice to a god, without leaving a trace was nothing but a fool's dream.

They followed the hidden trail to a secluded villa belonging to the Yuan family. The first thing Chao Jinsui saw was Yuan Fengnian, followed by an ancestral tablet.

The tablet bore a line of characters: To the Most Holy Teacher, the Heavenly Dao.

The demon lord flew into a rage. He kicked over Yuan Fengnian, who had stood up in a panic.

"She is alive and well! Why are you setting up a memorial tablet for her?"

Yuan Fengnian saw the demon horns and immediately fell silent, shaking like a leaf. There were no survivors from the blood sacrifice last night!

He had guessed that Chao Taichu must have botched the job, so upon hearing the news, he hurried to the villa. Who could have known he would be so unlucky as to run into this bringer of calamity so early in the morning?

Chao Jinsui had met Yuan Fengnian before. He was the younger brother of the Alliance Leader, Yuan Jingtian. Compared to his brother, he was remarkably unremarkable. He was likely Chao Taichu’s inside man. She ignored him, however, and walked up to the tablet to examine it closely.

No, this tablet clearly wasn't hers. It possessed the heavy weight of history, a relic from at least several hundred, if not a thousand, years ago.

Of course. Before her, had there not been a Heavenly Dao?

Upon seeing the tablet, Yan Xueyi’s eyes slowly turned gold. When he opened them again, he possessed a pair of crimson-gold pupils.

The Demon God stood before the tablet. "It is the previous Heavenly Dao."

Yuan Fengnian: If you knew it wasn't her tablet, why did you kick me?

His gaze was so full of resentment that the Demon God finally noticed another person was present. His golden eyes were cold and indifferent. Yuan Fengnian immediately tried to flee, but he didn't even get the chance to scream before he was struck dead by a single palm.

Silence returned to the villa.

Chao Jinsui studied the tablet. "Yanyan, when you were the Demon God, did you know the previous Heavenly Dao?"

The Demon God didn't correct her choice of nickname. He answered cleanly, "I did not."

"He likely manifested within the last ten thousand years. I have spent those ten thousand years in reincarnation."

The Demon God spoke of things from the ancient past. "The gods of the primordial era fell because there were too many of them, monopolizing the vitality of heaven and earth. Including the Heavenly Dao, the gods chose to dissipate into the world, transforming into life force and spiritual energy to nourish the land."

"I left my divine seat and entered the cycle of reincarnation."

After that, the humans and demons fell into a long period of chaotic warfare until a new Heavenly Dao was born from the human race to restore the balance. However, that birth was a matter of the last ten thousand years. By then, the Demon God had long since entered reincarnation and naturally did not know this specific Heavenly Dao.

Yet, the Demon God felt an instinctive, overwhelming sense of loathing. The sheer disgust caused his brows to furrow deeply.

Chao Jinsui had never seen "Yanyan" wear such an expression in his Demon God form. "What is it?"

The Demon God stared at the characters on the tablet, his face void of emotion. "Looking at these words makes me want to vomit."

Jinsui: ...

Demon God: "Even without a blood sacrifice, I strongly desire to strangle it."

He spoke the truth. "If you were the former heavenly Dao, I likely would have strangled you the moment you were born."

Jinsui: ... Well, he's honest.

She asked, "Yanyan, do you know under what circumstances a Heavenly Dao would die?"

Thinking of how she was also the Heavenly Dao and how he had nearly strangled her last night, the Demon God instinctively tried to clear his name. "I didn't beat him to death."

The simple-minded god had no idea that saying it like that made him sound incredibly suspicious.

Chao Jinsui glanced at him several times, but remembering that the Demon God was poor at lying, she ruled him out as a suspect.

She fell into deep thought. She didn't doubt the truth of the prophecy regarding the birth of a new Heavenly Dao, especially since the Demon God had recognized her at first sight. But the birth of a new Heavenly Dao should mean the old one had perished. What was happening here?

However, if this old Heavenly Dao was still alive, it explained where Chao Taichu’s blood sacrifice method came from. It also pointed to the culprit behind the two prophecies from years ago.

Chao Jinsui couldn't help but sneer. "Chao Taichu really is as stupid as ever."

If the other party truly was a previous Heavenly Dao that had not yet vanished, then that original prophecy was nothing more than a glaring piece of bait. Yet, Chao Taichu lunged for the hook without hesitation.

The Demon God agreed. "Stupid."

His emotional intelligence was remarkably low. Having been scared away the previous night, he had learned his lesson today, picking up the art of agreement and flattery from the high-EQ "Yan Xueyi."

"What should we do with this tablet?"

The Demon God truly detested this Heavenly Dao; the tablet gave him a very foul feeling. Thus, the god tossed it casually, landing it with precision into the courtyard's latrine.

As they left, the Demon God cast a handful of karmic fire, burning the empty estate to ashes to cleanse the area of that repulsive aura.

Having learned of the old Heavenly Dao's existence, Chao Jinsui became strangely calm. Even the faint unease she had felt since entering Jade Sword Mountain vanished. She didn't fear meeting a powerful opponent; she hated the unknown.

She vaguely realized that, perhaps, only one Heavenly Dao could remain between heaven and earth.

She knew the Demon God held vast knowledge, so on the way back, she wanted him to talk about the history of the Heavenly Dao and the gods of the primordial era.

The Demon God, a cold deity who looked like he would slap a passing dog just for existing, and did he seem like the type to share "godly insights" or bond over colleague sentimentality?

No. He was the type to glance at you like an ant and then crush you with a single palm.

Although Chao Jinsui had guessed that Yanyan had been unpopular as a god, after all, he was so volatile among the demons that the entire Myriad Demon Abyss wanted to beat him, she never expected him to have been so isolated.

The Demon God did remember the Heavenly Dao of the primordial era, though. That Heavenly Dao had been very annoying.

Chao Jinsui’s interest was piqued. Putting their relationship aside, she realized that if she became the Heavenly Dao, she would be his colleague. If Yanyan hated a certain behavior, she should find out his "trigger points," whether as his partner or his peer.

After all, the primordial Heavenly Dao predecessor had chosen to self-dissipate, so he must have been a "good" god.

Thus, she asked, "What did you hate about him?"

The Demon God kept his hands behind his back. "His breathing."

Jinsui: "..."
