“Oh, it was an absolute commotion! Every single day, His Grace was summoning doctors and wizards from all over—”
“Ahaha... that sounds like quite a commotion...”
On the day following her return to the real world, Ortansia was listening to Pamela recount everything that had transpired while she slept.
Apparently, ever since the night she used Time Leap, she had been fast asleep, throwing the entire ducal household into utter turmoil.
“Though I’m so relieved Tyrol-chan came back too! We were all beside ourselves when we couldn't find him anywhere...”
“Umm, well, it seems Tyrol was working really hard out there, worrying about me and all.”
Ortansia smoothed over the situation while gently stroking Tyrol, who was snoozing peacefully on her lap.
Though she had been asleep for a long time, aside from her body feeling a bit stiff, she had no real ailments to speak of. Even so, the people around her were being overly cautious; it didn't seem as though they would let her step foot outside anytime soon.
‘I was asleep the whole time after I used Time Leap that last time... The boundary between what was a dream and what was real still feels hazy.’
Precisely because of that, even after making it back, her lingering anxieties refused to fade.
‘What happened to rewriting the past to save Father from his tragic fate...?’
She had used Time Leap to go back to the day her parents met, successfully altering the course of history. Yet here she was, sitting in this room as the "ducal lady."
That meant fate had somehow snapped back to its original track. While she was overjoyed to be back in this place...
‘Does this mean... After everything I ultimately failed to save Father ...?’
Had things gone awry due to the demon's interference, or had a goddess—or someone else—restored the original timeline? She couldn't be sure, but in the end, she was right back where she started.
“Mmm...”
As Ortansia groaned, her mind spinning in endless circles, Pamela watched her in anxious flutters.
“My lady! Are you feeling unwell again—?”
“No, I’m fine! It’s just...”
Ortansia frantically shook her head and turned to Pamela.
“Umm... is Brother at the mansion right now? There’s something I’d like to speak with him about...”
After everything that had happened, Ortansia had truly learned her lesson.
...In the end, acting on her own had only left her dancing in the palm of a demon's hand, causing immense trouble and worry for Gérard. That was why she had changed her mindset: from now on, she had to consult him before trying anything reckless.
At her words, Pamela offered a sweet smile.
“I will go check right away, my lady!”
Pamela turned toward the door, but just as she took a step, a timely knock sounded, sending her trotting forward.
“Coming—! Oh my, Lord GĂ©rard!”
At Pamela’s bright voice, Ortansia gasped in surprise. To think that the very person she was about to go see had appeared from the other side.
“We were just talking about you, Lord GĂ©rard! The young lady was just saying she wished to see you—”
“Wha—!”
As Pamela cheerfully babbled on, Ortansia’s face flushed in panic.
In the past, it wouldn't have been anything to feel embarrassed about, but now that she was fully conscious of her feelings for him, she couldn't help feeling utterly self-conscious.
“I-I just had a quick question for Brother...”
Gérard looked down at Ortansia as she mumbled awkwardly, his expression as impassive as ever as he opened his mouth to speak.
“What a coincidence. I had something to tell you as well.”
“Really?!”
“Forgive me, but I have plans after this, so I cannot spare much time. Is that acceptable?”
“Y-Yes, of course...”
As Ortansia gave a bewildered nod, GĂ©rard’s eyes flicked over to Pamela. With just that single glance, Pamela instantly picked up on his intent.
“Well then, I shall step outside...”
“Wait, what?!”
The thought of being left alone with GĂ©rard made Ortansia’s heart race in sudden nervousness, and she cast a pleading look toward Pamela. But Pamela simply offered a gentle smile and stepped out of the room.
Naturally, Ortansia and Gérard were left completely alone. Technically Tyrol was there too, but he was breathing softly in deep sleep with no signs of waking up.
Ortansia’s eyes darted around frantically before she stole a nervous glance up at GĂ©rard. He wasn't shaken in the slightest, staring right back down at her.
“I will be brief, as I am short on time.”
It seemed he truly was in a hurry. As Gérard was about to speak, Ortansia swallowed her breath with a gulp.
“You are likely overthinking things in that head of yours again.”
“Ugh...”
Having spent the last few moments groaning and overthinking, Ortansia was caught completely off guard by his sharp deduction and found herself speechless.
“We can discuss the details another time, but I will say this much for now.”
GĂ©rard placed his palm gently on Ortansia’s head, leaning down until his eyes were level with hers at a dizzying proximity. Caught in his direct, unswerving gaze, Ortansia’s pulse instinctively quickened.
“There are likely many things weighing on your mind, but worry about nothing.”
Gérard spoke with quiet authority, as if trying to drill the words into her heart.
“What you need right now is rest. Do not trouble yourself with complicated matters; focus entirely on resting your body and mind.”
“...Yes.”
Understanding that Gérard was saying this out of deep, genuine care for her, she gave an obedient nod. At that, Gérard stroked her head in relief.
“...Do not worry. Nothing bad will happen.”
As if reading right through her soul, GĂ©rard repeated the words reassuringly. That sheer thoughtfulness alone made Ortansia’s chest throb with emotion.
‘Brother is only worrying about me as my "brother." I know that, and yet…’
Getting rid of her feelings was easier said than done. Ortansia did her best to calm her nerves, managing a soft smile up at him.
“...I understand, Brother. Thank you for taking the time to come by.”
Part of it was genuine concern, and the other part was likely his way of warning her not to do anything reckless again, that was surely why he had carved out time from his busy schedule to come here.
Appearing satisfied with her response, Gérard gave a single nod and lightly brushed her hair aside.
“...I will make time again in a few days. Be good until then.”
With only those words, Gérard turned and walked gracefully out of the room.
Left alone, Ortansia placed a hand over her thumping chest, letting out a long, heavy breath.
‘Haaah... this is terrible for my heart…”
Even while trying her best to act as she always had, she kept worrying whether her romantic feelings might be become noticeable. Would she really be all right at this rate?
‘I just have to get used to it. If I want to stay by his side as his "sister".’
Telling herself that over and over, Ortansia gave her slightly flushed cheeks two light, quick slaps.
And slowly, they pushed the door open.
