CHAPTER 9
PART 1
Thursday morning at 8:30 am, Chief Detective Jiang Ming had just reached his office door when he saw Detective Tan Yong, dressed in his police uniform, waiting there.
He paused for a moment and asked, "Tan Yong, what are you doing here?"
"I was waiting for you, Chief Jiang," Tan Yong replied.
Jiang Ming glanced at him and used his key to unlock the office door. "Waiting for me? Weren't you supposed to be on vacation? You applied for leave, and you should be resting now."
Tan Yong followed Jiang Ming into the office. "I've changed my mind; I want to start working today."
Jiang Ming sat down, gestured for Tan Yong to do the same, lit a cigarette, and looked at him. "Are you planning to discuss continuing the investigation of this case with me again?"
"You guessed it right, as always," Tan Yong replied.
"Tan Yong, why are you so stubborn? How many times do I have to tell you that in situations like this, you need to..."
"You need to recuse yourself," Tan Yong interrupted Jiang Ming and then pulled out a folded piece of paper from his police uniform pocket, handing it to Jiang Ming. "But now, there's been a change in circumstances."
"What's this?"
"It's a fax from Lawyer Feng Zheng of Wuhan Huaxing Law Firm. You'll understand once you read it."
Jiang Ming took the paper, unfolded it, and read the contents. After finishing, he was surprised. "Tan Yong, you've relinquished your inheritance rights to Gong Yamei's estate?!"
"Yes," Tan Yong replied calmly. "I entrusted Lawyer Feng Zheng to handle it for me yesterday, and this is the official letter from the law firm, stamped with their seal. You can call Wuhan Huaxing Law Firm to verify."
"What's going on? Of course, I trust you; there's no need to make that call. I'm just surprised. Tan Yong, did you give up your inheritance rights just to continue investigating this series of cases?"

"That's correct."
"I find it hard to believe. Is this case so crucial for you?"
Tan Yong fell silent for a moment and said, "There are various reasons, but the most critical one is that I can't live with it."
"Can't live with what?"
"Watching a serial killer right under my nose, committing murders one after another, while I peacefully inherit a massive estate without a care in the world, it's something I can't live with."
"But I'm investigating this case; you don't trust me?"
"It's not about trust."
"Then why do you insist on personally solving this case?"
"Jiang Ming, it's hard for me to explain my feelings to you. Since I was a child, I've loved reading crime novels and watching detective movies. I've always fantasized about being a detective who can see through the tricks of criminals, solving one case after another."
"Later, when I attended the police academy and became a detective, I thought I could finally fulfill that dream. But more than twenty years have passed, and I've never solved a major case. If it were just that, it would be fine. But now, the problem is that a series of serial murders is right in front of me, and the killer is someone I considered a friend! I meet with him regularly, yet I couldn't see through his true identity, allowing him to commit one crime after another without restraint."
"In this situation, standing by and doing nothing would be torture for me. If I can't personally solve this case, apprehend this vile killer with my own hands, for the rest of my life, I'm afraid I'll curse myself as an inept cop, a useless man, living in eternal regret and shame!"
Jiang Ming stared at Tan Yong for a moment, then nodded slightly and said, "I can understand your feelings, Tan Yong. But have you thought about one thing, even if you give up your inheritance rights and continue to handle this case, it doesn't guarantee that you'll solve it."
"I have thought about it."
"So, if you give up such a large inheritance and still can't catch the killer in the end, wouldn't that be even more regretful?"
"Yes, more than regret, I might even feel remorse. After all, I'm just an ordinary person; this much money isn't something I can treat lightly."

"Since you've considered all of this, why are you still doing it?"
"I want to try and see if, through this 'burning the boats' approach, I can push myself to unlock my potential. In other words, to avoid future regrets, I swear that I'll catch the killer and solve this case!"
Tan Yong's words left Jiang Ming deeply moved, and he felt an indescribable emotion welling up inside him. He nodded and said, "I understand. I'll call Director Chen right now to report this matter. Please wait for me in the office."
"Alright," Tan Yong turned to leave, and as he reached for the door, Jiang Ming stopped him. "Tan Yong..."
"What is it?" Tan Yong turned back.
Jiang Ming hesitated for a moment, his mouth slightly agape. "It's nothing, go ahead."
Tan Yong left the division chief's office and closed the door behind him. Jiang Ming watched his retreating figure and whispered softly to himself, "You're the one I've truly admired all these years."
