In the 23rd year of the Tianqi era of the Great Rui Dynasty, it was spring—a season of rebirth and blossoming flowers. Chu State, a famous city in the Jiangnan region, was especially radiant with vibrant colors. Among its many renowned hills was Wangjiang Mountain, home to many exotic plants.

A young girl gracefully made her way through the mountain. She was holding a silver pair of small scissors in one hand, a golden trowel in the other, and carried a small medicine basket on her back. This lively and adorable nine-year-old was none other than Yun Qingqiao.

"Seventh Brother, can you stay longer this time during your break?" she asked, looking up at the young man beside her.

"Indeed, I've saved up my leaves from the previous years. This time, Uncle let me stay longer since I'm accompanying him on his training expedition," responded the boy, who had grown much taller since their last meeting. His sharp eyebrows and slender eyes gave him an air of refined elegance.

"My master has agreed to let me study medicine in the Valley of the Divine Healer for the first half of the month, and for the second half, I'll stay in the Duke's mansion to continue my studies at Changsi Academy. So, you'll be able to spend more time with me. You haven't been back in years, and I've missed you. By the way, how are Baizi Yang and Zhuang Zi Chen doing?"

"Do you miss me, or are you just asking about those two boys?" Ye Renyu said with a smile, playfully tapping Yun Qingqiao on the head.

"Ha, come on, I'm out here gathering herbs to make sachets. You can take them to the barracks to ward off mosquitoes during the summer. Do you want one?"

"Yes, yes, yes!" Ye Renyu exclaimed, clearly delighted.

"Oh, by the way, I heard from your servant that Uncle Da assigned you some homework as soon as you got back. Have you finished it yet?" Yun Qingqiao asked.

"I finished it ages ago. Who do you think your Qi Ge is?" The young man retorted, casually twirling a foxtail stalk in his mouth.

"Don't boast too much. When Uncle Da scolds you, you'll wish you hadn't. I can put in a good word for you with Fourth Aunt, though," Yun Qingqiao teased.

Alarmed, Ye Renyu spat out the foxtail, "My dearest sister, please don't! The assignment from Uncle Da was an essay. Reading and practicing calligraphy are tedious enough as it is; they're nowhere near as fun as martial training!"

"Our grandfather is a great general, and so are many of our uncles. The Ye family has a long tradition of producing military leaders. But times have changed; in this peaceful era, what society needs more are scholar-generals," Yun Qingqiao wisely noted.

"You're even longer-winded than my mother," Ye Renyu grumbled. "To tell you the truth, it was Grandfather's idea to have me protect you." As he spoke, he took the basket of herbs from Yun Qingqiao's shoulder and carried it himself.

"Grandfather always treats me like a child! And I've improved a lot in martial arts; it's unlikely anyone could bully me now. So you know, the martial arts instructors at the academy can't teach me anymore. Uncle Da has been training me personally. Pretty impressive, huh?" Yun Qingqiao said, arching her eyebrows with pride. She was quickly distracted by a nearby herb and added it to her already half-full basket.

"Sister, our second brother Yun Yongyuan sent a letter to Grandfather saying that Dad has been promoted to Left Prime Minister. It's such big news; why didn't Aunt and Uncle summon you back to the capital?" Ye Renyu asked, taking the herbs she handed him and placing them in his basket.

"Grandfather won't even let me call him 'maternal grandfather,' saying that adding 'maternal' makes it sound distant," Yun Qingqiao replied, pointing her little golden shovel at Ye Renyu as she pretended to be angry. "You talking about this is also quite distant. Are you trying to get rid of me?" As she spoke, the dirt on her shovel cascaded off with each exaggerated motion she made.

Seeing her act this way, Ye Renyu burst into laughter. "Hahaha, with that attitude, I doubt even your Prime Minister father would claim you!" he joked.
