In the conference room of the Li City Criminal Investigation Bureau, Public Security Bureau Chief Chen Xin, Deputy Chiefs Hao Dong, Jiang Ming, Tan Yong, Li Bin, and others gathered urgently for a meeting. They were discussing the series of consecutive murder cases that occurred in the Yuehai Bay community.

Tan Yong, who had been in charge of investigating the case from the beginning, was reporting the situation. He was writing key points on the whiteboard while narrating the case.

"The first victim, Gong Yamei, drowned in the Yuehai Sea. After her death, lawyer Feng Zheng came to Li City and informed the members of the 'Big Family' that Gong Yamei had evenly distributed approximately 250 million in substantial inheritance among the nine members. Each person could inherit more than 27 million.

"However, this inheritance was not paid in a lump sum but spread over twenty years, around 1.38 million annually. The condition was that every inheritor from the Big Family couldn't leave the Yuehai Bay community in Li City for these twenty years. Additionally, if anyone from the Big Family died during this period, their money would be equally divided among the rest. In other words, the fewer people remaining, the more money each would inherit."

"Only three days after Gong Yamei's death, the 'Poisoned Chicken Soup Case' occurred. Someone secretly put a highly toxic powder of Flaming Morel mushrooms into the chicken soup, causing everyone to be poisoned. Yuan Dong died despite rescue efforts. Among the poisoned individuals, including the culprit himself, he used a diversion to avoid being the prime suspect."

"After the poisoning incident, both the police and the Big Family members were highly cautious and vigilant. The purpose of the murderer could likely be to reduce the number of inheritance recipients, thus gaining more money. Members of the Big Family dared not continue eating at Li Xueli's home and maintained distance and vigilance among themselves.

"To investigate the case and provide protection, I moved into the Yuehai Bay community with Li Bin, staying on the second floor of the same block. However, unexpectedly, on the very day we moved in, yesterday, another murder occurred. This time, the victim was Xia Qi."

"This case is much more mysterious compared to the 'poisoning case.' How the murderer killed Xia Qi remains a puzzle. Last night, Li Bin and I repeatedly patrolled and reminded everyone to securely close doors and windows, locking them from inside, to prevent anyone from entering at night. Due to the intimate relationships among the Big Family members, acquiring someone's room key and making a duplicate was relatively easy."

"Last night, Xia Qi clearly stated that she had closed the doors and windows and locked the main door. When we arrived at the scene today, we found the windows were indeed closed, making it impossible to enter from the outside. There were no signs of forced entry on the main door, but it wasn't locked from the inside. This is a significant suspicion. We suspect the murderer used some trickery to deceive Xia Qi into opening the door, then killed her in that moment and moved the body to the bedroom, setting up the scene to appear as if she was killed while in bed—this has been verified with the forensic team."

"The crucial clue in this case is that last night, around midnight, Xia Qi sent a message to the group saying, 'Tonight, after thinking for a long time, it seems like I know who the culprit is.' Someone asked her who the culprit was in the group, but she didn't reply, only saying, 'It's late now, I'll talk about it tomorrow.' After that, she didn't send any more messages. We have reason to believe that Xia Qi somehow guessed the identity of the murderer, and the murderer killed her to prevent her from reporting."

Tan Yong stopped speaking there, and Jiang Ming interrupted, "Let me add, the technicians have just cracked Xia Qi's phone screen lock. They checked her WeChat chat history, text messages, and call records. It was found that last night, Xia Qi made phone calls to Fan Lin, Su Xiaotong, Li Xueli, and Han Lei separately. Each call lasted around ten minutes. After these calls, just half an hour later, she posted the message in the group indicating that she knew who the murderer was. After that, she was killed. Therefore, we suspect that Xia Qi might have discovered the identity of the murderer while talking to these four people. In other words, the murderer is very likely one of these four women."

"If Xia Qi already knew who the murderer was, why did she send a message in the group instead of directly calling the police?" Chen Ju raised a question.

"Maybe Xia Qi wasn't so sure, so she sent a message in the group to test the murderer's reaction and attitude, but it resulted in her demise," Jiang Ming said.

"If that's the case, she shouldn't have opened the door. Most likely, no rational person would be foolish enough—knowing that the murderer was targeting them—to create an opportunity for their own murder."

"Yes, why would Xia Qi open the door in such a situation? It's a major question mark in this case," Tan Yong said.

"Two years ago in Yuehai Bay, there was a case of a tenant from out of town being murdered. That case remains unsolved until now. Do you think this current series of murders is related to the case from two years ago?" Chen Ju asked.

"I think it's related. It's just that at the moment, we haven't found the definite connection between the two. But all these cases are related to this 1203 house. I believe this can't be merely coincidental," Tan Yong said.

"So, counting the case from two years ago, four people have already died in Yuehai Bay. From any perspective, it's a major case. If it's not solved quickly, it will cause a very negative social impact and provoke public panic. I declare the immediate formation of a task force. The members and team leader will be determined by your Criminal Investigation Bureau."

Jiang Ming glanced at Tan Yong and said to Chen Ju, "The members of the task force will be me, Tan Yong, and Li Bin. I suggest Tan Yong as the team leader."

Tan Yong looked at Jiang Ming, feeling surprised. Generally, the team leader of a task force is the person with the highest position among the members.

Indeed, Chen Ju asked Jiang Ming, "Why shouldn't you take on the role of team leader?"

"Because from the beginning, Tan Yong has been in charge of this case. His understanding and familiarity with the people involved, the price he paid for this, his determination, and perseverance to solve the case all surpass mine. Tan Yong not only moved into Yuehai Bay but even gave up his own inheritance to crack the case. Such dedication and determination will surely be transformed into wisdom and strength. With my and Li Bin's assistance, I believe we can solve the case soon!" Jiang Ming replied.

Upon hearing this, Tan Yong felt a warm rush within him. He glanced gratefully at Jiang Ming, yet simultaneously felt an unprecedented pressure.

Chen Ju nodded in agreement, "Alright, let it be so!"

Before adjourning the meeting, Chen Ju asked one last question, "Gong Yamei distributed a 250 million inheritance to nine people, how many people are left now?"

"Yuan Dong died, Xia Qi also died, and I gave up my inheritance rights. That means three fewer people. Currently, each person's share of the inheritance has increased from the previous 27 million to over 41.6 million," Tan Yong replied.

"In other words, within a few days, the inheritance each person can receive has increased by over 13 million. If there are more deaths or withdrawals in the future, the amount will continue to rise," Chen Ju furrowed her brow, her expression grave, and said, "Under this enormous temptation of interests, some people's greedy nature could be maximally triggered. Tan Yong, Jiang Ming, and Li Bin, you must collaborate and do everything possible to stop the murderer from killing again and apprehend them. This case is now in your hands!"

Jiang Ming, Tan Yong, and Li Bin stood up together and said in unison, "Yes!"
