CHAPTER 39 - MEETING THE MOTHER
Here, Yun Qingqiao calmly watched as her father's concubines and children chatted idly among themselves. From around the corner of the main hall, a figure appeared—Madam Hua, according to the original host's memories. She was a maid who had accompanied her mother when she got married. Over the years, all the other maids had left to marry, leaving only Madam Hua.
Walking up to Yun Qingqiao, Madam Hua gave a respectful bow. "Old servant greets young miss."
Dressed in an indigo cotton dress, Madam Hua looked much plainer than the older maids beside the concubines. Her mother wasn't living well here.
Catching her eye, Madam Su quickly understood and helped Madam Hua up from her half-bow.
Softly, Yun Qingqiao said, "Madam Hua, you're too kind."
"Miss, your mother is waiting for you," Madam Hua stated bluntly, ignoring the stares from others.
"Then please lead the way, Madam Hua," Yun Qingqiao responded gently.
Yun Xiuwen had quickly risen to the rank of Vice Chancellor, and the residence bestowed upon him was naturally opulent and grand. When Yun Qingqiao first entered the mansion, walking from the front courtyard through the corridors to the main hall took quite some effort.
Now, as they moved from the main hall to the Vice Chancellor's wife's quarters, a maze of pavilions and towers unfolded before them, leaving one dazzled.

Fortunately, Yun Qingqiao and her maids had grown up in the Duke of Dingnan's residence, so they were no strangers to grandeur. They walked purposefully, their eyes focused straight ahead, maintaining proper etiquette.
As Vice Chancellor, Yun Xiuwen was highly favored by the Emperor. The mansion, as grand as it looked from the outside, should have been equally magnificent inside. But what Yun Qingqiao found was a tasteful elegance; it was both luxurious and simple, which spoke volumes about why her father had the Emperor's favor.
After about fifteen minutes, they finally arrived at Yunhua Residence, the living quarters of the Vice Chancellor's wife. Yun Qingqiao saw a more secluded courtyard, not the one from her original host's memories. Still, the surroundings were pleasant, if not as extravagant, which suited her mother's personality.
Passing through a side room and walking along a gallery, they entered the main room, where someone could be heard coughing.
Madam Hua stood firm and announced, "Young miss is here!"
The coughing inside ceased.
Two young maids, probably in their early twenties, emerged. They must have been hired after her mother's original maids had left to marry.
Swiftly, Madam Hua approached Ye Heying, adjusted her back pillows, and smiled, "My lady, your daughter has returned!"
Yun Qingqiao rushed in and saw her mother reclining on a daybed. Her once beautiful face was now pale, and her cheeks were sunken. The radiant beauty she had seen in her dreams when she first crossed over was nowhere to be found. Heartbroken, she knelt beside the bed, took her mother's hand, and burst into tears.
"Mother, I'm back. I've failed to be by your side to take care of you."
Quick-thinking Madam Su positioned Youzhu and Jingyu by the door while Chunan stood by the window, and Yian kept an eye on the courtyard.
Looking at her daughter with love, Ye Hehuan said, "Nine years without seeing you, and you've grown so much!"
Noticing the veil on her daughter's face, she paused before asking,
"Why are you wearing a veil?"
