CHAPTER 11 - THE STRAY DOG
"Well, you have rare golden hair."
"It's beautiful."
A female official's fan gently lifted her chin. Sango was confused.
“Well, how nice. A handsome man. ”
"Such a beautiful face, I've never seen it before.''
“The head of the Wang family has discovered the dragon jewel.”
Sango tilted her head, she couldn't understand the words that the ladies-in-waiting were saying. They were so fast.
“What kind of instrument do you like?”
"Seven-stringed?”
“I play Go, calligraphy, painting, and many other things.”
Sango couldn't understand the question so Konkon explained to him.
“They are asking about the names of the instruments. Seven-stringed, harp and other. Go is a game played on a board, and calligraphy involves writing characters with a brush. Painting is just painting. All of them are things that comfort your heart but not musical instruments.”
"I see"
Konkon explained with gestures. Sango wrote them down in her notebook.
"Unfortunately, I don't have any..."
As a child of an aristocratic family, she enjoyed playing the piano and violin, but she was told that they didn't exist in this country.
"Oh, that's too bad."
"Now that you know the language, why don't you try learning an instrument at Miyabi?"
"As the name suggests, Miyabi is a place where ladies-in-waiting give elegant performances live in the inner palace for Princess Hoshi. It is an event that entertains people. It is held two or three times a month."
“However, Princess Hoshi doesn’t like lively things.”
“It is held once a month.”
“I want Hanafuda, so I would like to see more events held.”
Once again, an unknown word appeared.
“What exactly is Hanafuda?”
Here too, Konkon quietly whispered to her and told her the meaning.
"Sango-sama, hanafuda are amulets given by the princess to ladies-in-waiting. Only ladies-in-waiting who can entertain Mistress by playing instruments or dancing at a gag party receive the item. ”
"Hmmm"
When she asked the ladies-in-waiting if they would be happy to receive it, they nodded their heads.
"Hanafuda cards are wonderful things."
“Wow, you can order whatever you want from outside.”
"Everything is allowed, including sweets, clothes, and musical instruments."
"I see. I understand."
Sango would not be able to present anything at the Miyabi-kai.
She didn't have anything in particular that she wanted, she couldn't think of anything in particular.
Suddenly, a certain item came to her mind.
The confiscated sword given by Prince Mericle. She wondered if she could get that back with Hanafuda.
"Sango-sama, what's wrong?"
She shook her head at Konkon's question.
At this moment, she had found her purpose in the inner palace. Sango straightened her position and bowed to the three ladies-in-waiting.
"From now on, please take care of me."
"Oh dear"
“So-so.”
"His pronunciation, speech, gestures, everything is not correct."
The eyes of the lady in charge of the Shogi Department shone brightly.
For some reason, Sango felt a chill and sweat formed on her forehead.
"First, let's try our best to pronounce it correctly."
"If you can do this, you won't have a hard time talking."
"It's okay. No one can do it from the beginning."
The ladies-in-waiting were supposed to be smiling with the corners of their mouths turned up, but their eyes weren't smiling.
The way one of them held a fan and slammed it into Sango's hand was a frightening gesture.
Sango had a bad feeling.
It was the beginning of a hard and demanding language training.

"My jaw hurts..."
She couldn't help but feel alone.
It was a relentless guidance. She failed to pronounce the word correctly a lot of times and they kept slamming the back of his hand with their fans.
In an exhausted state, Sango walked down the hallway leading to her private room. The training in etiquette at the Shogi Club was hard beyond imagination.
Everything was different from the days of knights wielding swords and raising their spirits. Sango screamed for an hour.
The reason for this was Karetsu's unique way of sitting.
Sango usually did his work while sitting on a chair. However, people in this country sit with their knees bent and the tops of their feet touching the floor from below the knees.
It was so painful that he was on the verge of tears. He begged the ladies-in-waiting several times to let him take a break. However, they would not forgive her until she could pronounce it properly.
Thanks to them, she felt like her pronunciation and word delivery had improved a lot.
It's finally over. She thought deeply as she looked up at the silver moon floating in the sky in the breezeway.
Konkon was summoned by someone from another department, and Sango was alone on the way home. A lady in charge of the Shogi Department wanted to go and call her, but she refused. She remembered exactly how she got to her private room.
She was staring blankly at the moon, but she was startled when she sensed a presence in the grass by the pond.
Holding onto the pillar firmly, she leaned forward and peered into the garden.
There was a rustling sound, like something was scraping through the grass.
Maybe it was a grasshopper. That's what she thought as he put her hands on her hips, where his sword usually was but there was nothing there.
She remembered that the weapons were confiscated.
However, Sango had some confidence in close combat, so he descended into the garden from the bridge-like passageway.
She pushed through the vegetation and approached the direction of the sound.
She heard an animal cry.
She approached it, furrowing her eyebrows.
“Is anyone there?”
She couldn't feel any murderous intent. She didn't feel any anxiety.
‘Are you a cat or a dog?’
She peered through the grass. What was there was――
“A dog?”
The dog looked up at her.
It had round ears, brown fur, and black fur around its eyes. Its tail was fluffy. The dimensions were not that large. Sango thought it was probably a small dog.
‘But why is there a dog in a place like this?’
It didn't seem to be afraid. It didn't even try to run away. It was just staring up at her with wet eyes.
When their eyes met, she held out her hand and the dog approached her.
There was no sign of it baring its fangs, so she assumed it was her dog.
The small brown dog placed its paw on her palm.
“By any chance, can I help you?”
As if it was responding to her, the dog let out a yelp.
"Hand"
The dog rested its front paw on her palm.
"That's very smart..."
Unfortunately, she didn't have any sweets as a reward. So instead, she praised it exaggeratedly and patted her on the head.
That was all, but the dog wagged its tail in joy.
Maybe it's Princess Hoshi’s dog. Thinking so, Sango picked up the dog.
There was almost no animal odor. The fur was fluffy and it appeared to be neatly combed.
She was convinced that it was her dog after all.
The dog seemed anxious and barked.
Sango gently patted his back as if she was trying to encourage him.

"--I'm back"
With the words she just learned, she went into the private room they shared.
She wasn't in the living room connected to the door, so she looked into the bedroom, but he wasn't there.
"There's no way you'll be sleeping after this hour."
When she looked behind, she saw Hongyu coming out of the office door.
The dog barked, “Kou-”
“What is that!?”
Hongyu's eyes widened when he saw the dog that Sango brought with him.
She explained that it had wandered into the garden.
“No, Princess Hoshi doesn’t have a dog.”
“Then, what about the other princesses?”
"I've never heard anything about them owning a dog or cat. No, I'm sorry. I don't know much about the internal circumstances outside of Peony Palace either."
"I see"
The dog looked up at Sango with anxiety. It looked like she was sad because she couldn't go home to her family.
"Um, kouuu."
"What"
"I have a request"
Sango held the dog close to her chest and prayed with a solemn look on her face.
On the other hand, Hongyu was looking at him suspiciously.
“Um, would you mind if I keep this dog with you until the owner shows up?”
“Just when he went to the Shogi Club, I thought he would be able to speak a little better. I didn't expect him to come back with another problem.''
"What did you say?"
However, once he had picked it up, she couldn't leave it alone.
"Please, please. Please save the dog."
Hongyu let out a big sigh and rubbed the wrinkles between his eyebrows.
“Firstly, that's not a dog, it's a Raccoon! ”
The raccoon dog was a creature that was not available in Sango's homeland.
Sango tilted his head at Hongyu's point.
