VOLUME 3: UNEXPECTED SOCIAL DEBUT
Chapter 24: To Her Majesty the Queen,
"Oh my! What's this all about! Breaking your promise with Elucia-san and responding to His Majesty the King's summons!"
Countess Korvitz clasped her head, hysterically shouting. Klaus is the type who would choose work over me without hesitation if asked which is more important. So, even upon hearing that he was ordered on a mission for the Iron Cavalry, I could only think, "I see."
"It's terrible to send Elucia-san alone to the den of iniquity disguised as a debut party in high society!"
"Um, Countess Korvitz, I'll be fine."
"You can't possibly be fine!"
She reached out and touched the emerald tiara and earrings.
"I have this tiara and earrings, so I'm not alone."
"Elucia-san...!"
For some reason, the tiara and earrings, which had felt heavy before, now seemed to give me courage. It felt as if they were encouraging me to do my best.
"Even if Lau-sama isn't here, I intend to attend the party with confidence."
Countess Korvitz nodded with teary eyes. It seemed she understood, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
Having displayed confidence with exaggerated gestures, I now must get through this party no matter what. Although I'm concerned about the annulment of the engagement between Ubel and Jillke as seen in the prophetic dream... I'll ask Countess Korvitz's maidservant to carry extra handkerchiefs just in case I end up coughing blood again.
As I was bid farewell by Countess Korvitz, I set off for the palace. It marked the beginning of the long-awaited major event of the past few months.
Around the palace, men and women dressed in their finest were already forming lines and walking. Carriage traffic was restricted, and it seemed most nobles had to disembark before entering the premises. Countess Korvitz's carriage seemed to be allowed to go all the way to the front of the palace. Along the way, I spotted Ubel and Jillke, and I was startled. Their atmosphere was already tense, as if they were arguing loudly about something. Seeing them suggested that the future foreseen in the dream was awaiting, making my chest tighten. I closed the curtains hanging on the window and pretended not to notice.
The carriage didn't stop at the entrance but went around to the back of the palace. Some distinguished guests were guided to enter from less crowded areas. Even without announcing ourselves, the knight guards nodded and gestured for us to enter. Along the way, a maid of Her Majesty the Queen came to greet me. She apparently wanted to speak with me before the event started.
"Please come this way."
With a nervous expression, I followed the maid. In the designated guest room, the Queen was waiting for me. The Queen, who stood up gracefully, was as beautiful as a lily.
"So, you're the daughter of Duke Schild."
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I am Elucia von Lindenberg, daughter of Duke Schild."
"No need for formalities. Please, come this way."
I straightened my back so much that I felt like a stick might be stuck in it, and I walked towards the Queen. I was ushered to a long chair and gently took a seat. Perhaps my nervousness seemed comical, as the Queen put a fan to her mouth and began to chuckle.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Klaus just argued with His Majesty for the first time earlier... He showed a sulky attitude, saying he had to break his promise to attend the party with you because he was ordered on a mission. It reminded me..."
"Klaus did?"
It's unlike him to express personal feelings in front of the King. Countess Korvitz had strongly urged me to attend the party with him, so he might have been left with a lingering feeling.
"He has never spoken up before, even when called in the middle of the night or during school exams. I was just talking to His Majesty about how much he cares about you."
Her demeanor was like that of someone admiring an adorable relative.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I called you here for a different reason."
"It's okay, please don't worry."
The Queen smiled quietly like moonlight and signaled to the maid. On the table was an intricately carved wooden box with floral patterns. The Queen opened the lid and picked up something. It was a star-shaped badge. It was a "Star Badge" usually awarded to those who have distinguished themselves in battle.
"This is a reward from the royal family for your courage."
"For me to receive a Star Badge?"
"Yes."
It was said to be the first time in history for a woman to receive it.
"Thanks to you, many lives were saved. I sincerely appreciate it."
Invited by the Queen's gesture, I approached and knelt down beside her. The Queen personally pinned the badge to my chest.
"Thank you for your hard work."
"Thank you very much."
I sincerely thought that I must live up to this star. As the party was about to begin, I took my leave from the Queen's room. I was surprised. To be awarded a star badge. I hadn't realized initially that I had been in the midst of such a major event. As I walked down the corridor, my heart was pounding.
I need to change my mindset. Just because I was given a star badge doesn't mean I can float around.
Straight ahead was the grand hall. Many men and women were already gathered, engrossed in conversation. The maid whispered to the footman standing at the entrance, who then announced:
"Miss Elucia von Lindenberg, daughter of Duke Schild, has arrived!"
Though I wished they wouldn't make such a big deal out of it, this was a rite of passage for my debut in high society. I prayed to the gods that Ubel and Jillke wouldn't notice me.
