VOLUME 3: UNEXPECTED SOCIAL DEBUT

Chapter 25: What I was afraid of….

Already, the daughters of noble families who have already debuted in society were forming a line to pay their respects to His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen. Among them were relatives of the royal family and daughters of prestigious noble families with long histories. The difference in status was apparent at a glance.

A man approached me. My maid whispered to me that he was the Chief of the Royal Household.

"Miss Elusia of House Schild, please come this way."

"Yes."

After all, I am also a daughter of a duke. I would probably be guided relatively close to the front. The gazes of the noble daughters who were already lined up pierced me like daggers. If possible, I didn't want to stand out.

To my surprise, the Chief of the Royal Household led me to the front of the line.

"Um, I think it's better if I stand further back..."

"No. As a member of the Shield family, who supports our country as one of its shields, and as someone who has received a star badge, Miss Elusia is more fitting to stand at the front than anyone else."

I was placed in an extremely awkward position. Eyes like needles were already stabbing into my back. It felt like being on a bed of nails.

I wanted to leave as soon as possible— but then His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen arrived. Everyone kneeled deeply and bowed. His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen greeted those who had welcomed them near the entrance with gentle smiles. It would take a while to reach the prepared throne. Until then, I had to brace myself. As I was steadying my breath, I felt a strong tug on my arm.

"What are you doing here?!"

Zilke approached me, startling me. I hadn't been paying attention to my surroundings because I was watching His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen.

"I was told I couldn't greet the King and Queen, so why are you at the front?!!"

"Zilke, please don't raise your voice."

I was already drawing attention, and her commotion was making me stand out even more.

"I'm a daughter of Duke Schild. This isn't your place!!"

Zilke forcefully pulled my arm, which she was holding onto. As a result, I, wearing high-heeled shoes, lost my balance and fell right there.

"Ahh!"

Zilke stood confidently in the place where I had been standing. Despite not being the true daughter of my father, she didn't have the right to be received in audience. As I stood up, I heard a shout from behind.

"What are you doing, Zilke?!"

It was Ubel who had arrived. Astonishingly, he slapped Zilke across the face.

"W-What are you doing?!"

"That's my line! Do you realize how foolish your actions were!?"

"I don't care! I'm going to greet the King and Queen now!"

"You were just told by the Chief of the Royal Household that you don't have that right!"

The guards gathered, and Zilke was restrained. Apparently, they had rushed over at the same time as she pushed me away. Ubel directed words of condemnation towards Zilke.

"I didn't think you were so ignorant and foolish!!"

"That's my line!!"

The moment I heard their exchange, my heart skipped a beat. Their conversation was exactly the same as in the dream. Even though I had thought about escaping from here, my legs stiffened and wouldn't move. Why—? I wanted to cry now, but my whole body froze like a statue.

"That's enough!! I'm breaking off the engagement with you, Zilke!"

Finally, he broke off the engagement. What I saw in my dream had become reality.

"Fine, fine. I'm done with you anyway. I'm going to find a wonderful prince now!"

Zilke shouted at Ubel as she was being taken away by the guards. Although the situation was different from the dream, her words were exactly the same. And— Ubel suddenly reached out his hand towards me.

"Ahh, Elusia! You're the only one for me after all. I will marry you, Elusia!!"

He said it. The words I had feared the most. My vision blurred, and I felt like I was about to collapse at any moment.

"Now, Elusia. Come here."

Ubel tried to touch me. I didn't want it, I absolutely didn't want to be touched. Someone, anyone, help—!

"Receive the King's and Queen's permission for marriage..."

Before Ubel's hand could touch me, someone pushed him away. There was a loud clang, and my vision cleared. I was suddenly pulled towards someone. In my field of vision were black hair and crimson eyes.

"Unfortunately, she is engaged to me."

"W-What—?!"

The person embracing me was Klaus, his face stained with blood. He was entirely dressed in black, not exactly suitable for this occasion. However, in that moment, he seemed like a hero to me.

Screams erupted from the surroundings, and voices shouting "The Demon Prince!" echoed. Ubel looked pale and stared up at Klaus.

"E-Elusia, is it true that you were engaged to this man?!"

I looked up at Klaus's face. He nodded slightly. I didn't quite understand the situation, but Klaus must be helping me. Then, I had to make up my mind and speak up here.

"I am promised to Klaus von Dingfelder!"

Ubel's eyes widened, and he took a step back, then another.

"If you have no business here, leave!"

After hearing those words, Ubel made a quick about-face and ran away. My relief was short-lived. It seemed that His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen had witnessed the whole commotion. Just as I was about to apologize, His Majesty the King began to applaud.

"It's like a miracle that the Sword family, who have long been at odds, and the Shield family are forming a marriage. We must also give our blessings."

"Yes. We must also offer our blessings."

Following the King and Queen, applause poured from everyone in the grand hall. The dream I had seen

was turned upside down by Klaus's appearance.
