VOLUME 3: UNEXPECTED SOCIAL DEBUT

Chapter 26: Klaus's Account

Unbelievable. I never expected him to go this far.

Klaus bows respectfully. Despite his bloodied face, if you just observed his demeanor, he would seem like a nobleman.

While King Majesty smiles and nods, he worries about Klaus.

"Klaus, are you okay with all this blood?"

"Yes, it's just back spray."

Those surrounding us grimace. It's understandable.

"For a while, it would be good for the betrothed to spend some time alone in a room."

Klaus and I return the bow together.

Against all odds, he strides confidently through the grand hall with his arm around my shoulder.

The crowd naturally recedes, creating a path all the way to the entrance.

He seems to be walking quite slowly, perhaps matching my pace. I couldn't help but think how unexpected this consideration was.

The moment we pass through the entrance reserved for select individuals, I step away from Klaus.

"Here, please."

I take out the handkerchief I had tucked into my bosom and offer it to Klaus.

"Where do you keep a handkerchief?"

"I have no choice. Dresses don't have pockets."

It's a bit warm, but it hasn't directly touched my skin. I argue it's hygienic.

Klaus accepts it and wipes the blood from his forehead.

When I reach out for the handkerchief back, he tucks it into his chest pocket.

"Um, could you please return the handkerchief?"

"Bloodstained and dirty, isn't it?"

"It is!"

"Isn't it?"

My true feelings slip out unintentionally, and I don't get the handkerchief back. I hate my germophobia.

"Let's go."

"Wait. Why did you help me, Lord Lau?"

"Rather than expressing gratitude, is that your first concern?"

"I am grateful. However, you seemed opposed to our marriage when we spoke last night."

Klaus turns around and stares at me. His gaze is so intense I want to look away.

I can't afford to lose. I stand firmly on both legs and gaze back at Klaus.

The reason he decided to marry me was surprising.

"Because you said it would save you from death."

"Huh?"

"Death isn't salvation."

With eyes like he's seeing an enemy's parent, Klaus says.

"Don't run away. Don't avert your eyes from reality."

My heart races.

Those words sound familiar. Though the circumstances are different, they're what he said to me in a precognitive dream.

"I helped because I thought if marrying you would save you, then I should lend a hand. There are no further emotions beyond that."

"Lord Lau—"

Instead of saying thank you, I vomit blood.

Suddenly dizzy, I can't stand.

This must be the price for changing the future I saw in my dreams.

"Ugh, ugh, uuugh...!!"

"Hey, are you okay!?"

I press my hand against my mouth with gloved hands, trying to keep the blood off my dress.

Klaus lifts me up, not like luggage this time, but in a princess carry.

"Are you sick!?"

"N-no. When Jill kicked me earlier, I cut my mouth."

"That sounds like a lame excuse!"

The gloves are dyed crimson. There was too much blood for a mere cut on the mouth.

I'm taken to a nearby room and gently laid down.

The blood-soaked gloves are removed, and a sheet is pressed to my mouth.

"Ugh, ugh—!"

Klaus peers anxiously at me.

When he reaches out, about to approach me, I whisper in his ear.

"I don't want to stain the dress with blood, so could you take it off?"

"You—!"

I didn't want to ruin the dress that Countess Corvitz had carefully cleaned and repaired.

I wanted to ask him, please, but my consciousness suddenly fades.

---

A cool hand touches my forehead.

"...Feels good."

Surprised by my own voice, I suddenly wake up.

Opening my eyes, I meet Klaus's gaze.

As I try to sit up, he firmly presses my forehead.

It seems Klaus's hand was the one touching my forehead.

Gradually, my consciousness becomes clearer.

I witnessed the cancellation of Ubel and Jill's engagement while on the verge of a glamorous debut in society, and then Ubel, fleeing from Jill's control, proposed to me.

Klaus saved me from the brink of death.

I wanted to thank him but ended up vomiting blood instead.

"How long was I asleep?"

"An entire day."

"Huh!?"

When Klaus removes his hand from my forehead, I sluggishly sit up.

This isn't the royal palace's rest area; it's the Corvitz residence.

"Why am I here?"

"After the doctor's diagnosis, I brought you here."

"R-right..."

I express my thanks in a barely audible voice.

To think I was bedridden for so long...

The damage to my body must have been substantial since I altered my fate so drastically.

"Incredibly, the doctor said you weren't sick."

That's to be expected. My blood vomiting is the price for changing my fate.

Probably, I'm sacrificing my life or something.

"However, Dr. Yensh's diagnosis was different."

"Dr. Yensh was here?"

"Yeah. Grandmother called him. He said that the stress from recent events caused internal damage to your stomach, resulting in vomiting blood."

Indeed, life with Iacov and Jill had become mentally burdensome. It's not strange that I vomited blood.

"You don't have to return to your family's home anymore."

Countess Corvitz offered to be my guardian and legal guardian.

She submitted the paperwork to His Majesty the King, and it was accepted without issue.

To think she did all this in just one day. My eyes begin to tear up as I listen.

"During our engagement period, you can live with Grandmother."

"That's... right. Come to think of it, Count Corvitz isn't here, is he?"

Apparently, Count Corvitz lives in the main residence with his mistresses.

It seems the husband and wife each live their own happy lives, as they say.

"There are various forms of marriage, aren't there?"

"It's becoming quite ridiculous."

I can't imagine what kind of married couple Klaus and I will become.

The only thing I can say for sure is that he's not the type to have many mistresses like Count Corvitz.

"Lord Lau, thank you very much for everything. Thanks to you, it seems peace will come to me."

I avoided the worst fate of marrying Ubel. If he were my betrothed instead of Klaus, I wouldn't have stood a chance.

Furthermore, I don't have to return to my family's home. I won't be bullied by Iacov and Jill ever again.

I have to spend my whole life repaying Klaus.

I'll use my precognitive ability for him, not just for myself.

That's what I strongly vowed in my heart.
