193. Ah, I Really Am Home
“Umm, Brother, where are we heading today?”
Settling into her seat inside the carriage, Ortansia asked timidly.
She was fully ready to follow him wherever he led, yet she couldn't help but crave a little advance preparation for her fragile nerves.
Gérard stared intently at Ortansia for a beat before letting out a low murmur.
“The Royal Botanical Gardens.”
“The Royal Botanical Gardens...?”
At the sound of those words, a sharp tremor ran through her heart.
The Royal Botanical Gardens... She vividly remembered visiting that place with the other Gérard in the world created by the demon. After all, she still held a crystal-clear memory of him presenting her with that Shangri-La flower brooch.
‘Now that I think about it, when I told Brother what happened in that world, I did briefly mention that Lord GĂ©rard and I went to the Royal Botanical Gardens, but…’
There was no way Gérard would remember such a trivial detail, let alone go through the trouble of replicating the exact same situation here in the real world. It was almost certainly a mere coincidence.
‘I have no idea why Brother is taking me to the Royal Botanical Gardens, but... knowing him, he must have a deep reason for it.’
Ortansia managed to convince herself.
As usual, Gérard was gazing out the window with an unreadable expression, leaving his thoughts completely shrouded in mystery. Yet, strangely enough, the silence between them didn't feel uncomfortable in the slightest.
‘Ah, I really am home.’
The sweet realization washed over her anew, and Ortansia had to bite her lip hard to swallow back the prickle of tears.
◇◇◇
When they arrived, the Royal Botanical Gardens presented the exact same scenery she had walked through with the other Gérard in the demon's illusion. Even though she knew rationally that every inch of that realm had been a deception, Ortansia couldn't resist a strange wave of bittersweet nostalgia.
As she stood there mesmerized by the view, GĂ©rard’s voice broke through her reverie.
“When you came here before—”
“Uhhmm!”
“What did you see?”
GĂ©rard turned his sharp, probing gaze squarely at her, causing Ortansia’s posture to stiffen on instinct.
“Umm... by 'before'...?”
“...You mentioned coming here in that illusionary world, did you not?”
‘H-He remembered...!’
She had never imagined he would bring that up here of all places, and a slick, uncomfortable cold sweat broke out across her skin.
...She had genuinely believed it was just a coincidence. But Gérard had brought her to this exact location knowing full well that she had visited it with the Gérard of that other world.
‘Why on earth would he do that?!’
...Truthfully, she would have preferred for him to let sleeping dogs lie. Unable to fathom what was passing through GĂ©rard’s head, Ortansia felt like a wretched criminal standing before a merciless interrogator.
Still, now that Gérard had asked, she couldn't stay silent forever. Opening and closing her mouth like a fish desperately gasping for oxygen, Ortansia desperately squeezed out an explanation.
“Umm, he simply showed me around to look at the flowers! We took the walking path that connects right from the main entrance over there—”
Flustered, Ortansia used exaggerated hand gestures as she frantically explained that nothing out of the ordinary, nothing he needed to worry about—had happened.
At that, the sharp, interrogative tension radiating from Gérard seemed to soften, if only a fraction.
“...I see. So that was it.”
“...? Brother...?”
“Let’s move.”
She had no idea what part of her panicked rambling had satisfied him, but Gérard set off walking. Ortansia let out a long, quiet sigh of relief and hurried after him.
‘...Wait. This isn't the walking path.’
She wasn't entirely sure where Gérard was leading her, but he was certainly heading in a completely different direction than the route she had taken in the illusionary world.
Following closely behind his back, she realized he was steering them directly toward the massive conservatory standing prominently at the very center of the grounds.
‘Does he have business in there?/’
Neither in this world nor in the illusion had she ever stepped foot inside that grand conservatory. Though she still couldn't fathom why Gérard had brought her here, her curiosity was undeniably piqued.
