(1,1) UNTIL OUR MIRACLE REACHES YOUR HEART - CHAPTER 1, PART 1

 Prev | TOC | Next

The future is always uncertain.

Just like today, we don't know if tomorrow will come

Fate is predetermined

Miracles do not happen so easily

In such a world, how do we live?

Will we be able to use up

These precious days

An endless horizon and a slightly distorted asphalt road.

Calm and soft blue sea under the sky.

I thrust one hand in my pocket, humming to myself as I make my way between the two.

A peaceful town by the sea.

I walk to school on the promenade overlooking the horizon. The road to school is a sidewalk by the sea beyond the horizon, and you can always see the sea and sky from the classrooms of the school.

Even I, who have become accustomed to this view in my daily life, still think it is "the best," so it is understandable that the media sometimes come here in search of a spectacular view.

"Ishikura!"

I stopped when I heard someone call my name. Turning around, I see my classmates waving at me from the other side of the road.

"Are you eating ice cream again? It's still early in the summer isn't it?"

"For me, spring, summer, fall, and winter are all ice cream days!"

In my left hand, I have an ice cream cone that is almost melted.

This commute is the best. First of all, the scenery is nice. Second, there is a small store where you can buy popsicles.

Eating popsicles while walking alongside the ocean. This luxury is possible thanks to this route to school.

"Don't be late tomorrow."

"When have I ever been late? You're just too early!"

The sound of laughter disappeared around the corner with a "See you later!"

It's just so lively

I laughed and stretched my hands upward, looking at the horizon.

The half-eaten popsicles reflect the sun's rays and shine, and the zipper on the backpack makes a small clicking sound...

"Huh!"

"Eh?"

Suddenly, a small voice shook behind me, and I turned around in surprise.

'Nakata......Nakata, san?'

There stood my classmate Nakata, Nakata Kurumi.

She was rubbing her right cheek with her eyes narrowed.

 No way.

I rushed to her side with all my might.

"Sorry! Did it get in your eye?"

"It hurts! It's sinking!"

A drop of melting popsicle can fly anywhere with a slight backlash. Apparently, it bounced to her face.

I'm not sure what to do to help.

 "Oh, yeah..."

She looked up and retreated vigorously backwards, rubbing her cheek with the towel she had taken out of her uniform pocket.

This is soda flavored, so the carbonic acid component might have made it sink in even more "...I am really sorry!"

It was a terrible blunder to send an ice cream cone into a girl's face - and that too, at Nakata-san's face.

She has long chestnut hair and large eyes with large pigment. She was in the same class with me for the first time since entering the third grade, and even though she did not belong to a prominent group, she somehow stood out in the classroom.

However, she seems to be extremely shy, and I have only seen her talking with a limited number of girls.

"My towels are getting sticky, aren't they? What should I do?" She mumbled

"Let me help you."

"I'll take care of it. It's okay! I just need to clean it off my cheek!"

I took a step toward her, and she took a step back.

That's when I realized the mistake I was making. Maybe this distance is too close for her.

I took a big step backwards.

"Sorry, I was too close!"

"It's okay........"

"I'm also sorry for talking to you in a friendly manner on the first day of class!"

'I'm sorry for talking to you in a familiar way on the first day of class...?'

On the first day of the class reshuffling, when I spoke to her, she avoided me, saying, "I'm in a bit of a hurry..."

I had seen her in the hallway before and thought she was beautiful. I later learned that she is extremely shy and often uses the reason "I'm in a hurry" when approached, especially by boys.

Since then, a month and a half had passed without me finding the right moment to talk to her.

I had been regretting it for a long time.

I had always regretted it. If someone talks to you so enthusiastically when you first meet, no one would be able to handle it.

"He is cheerful and a mood-maker who could easily open up to anyone." That's how the adults around me have described me ever since I was a child. I have always had a cheerful disposition. But I wonder how many people realized the real reason for my cheerful personality.

"......Ishikura, Ishikura, you've been apologizing for a while now."

The strength of her grip on the straps of her backpack was released a little.

"Nakata-san, you know what?"

Human beings have a certain affinity for each other. Even if you want to get along with someone, sometimes it doesn't work out. In human relationships, I believe that such a kind of wavelength is the most important thing.

 How about Nakata-san and I?

My first impression was a one-way arrow from me.

My second impression from the past month and a half is that Nakata is probably not good at the type of relationship with someone like me.

And now my third impression. I think we might be....

"Would you like to be my friend?"

I held out my right hand, the one not holding the ice cream. Of course, I didn't forget to scrub my palm clean on my pants before doing so. A small rustling sound of waves shakes the air between us. It's for a moment, but it feels like an eternity. For some reason, a line from a TV drama I once saw comes to mind. I didn't understand it at that time, but I thought that perhaps that is how it is described. I thought to myself, 'Ishikura-kun, you are so strange.' I had never felt her warmth on my right hand. The most important thing to remember is that the best way to get the most out of your money is to be prepared to spend it. A dazzling, pure white hand held the towel out to me. "Popsicle, it's melting" The soda-flavoured popsicle, whose existence I had completely forgotten, was dripping from my left hand to my feet. The third reason why this route to school is the best. ─ ─ Nakata Kurumi passes by.
