After Feng Zheng left, Tan Yong also took his leave. Today happened to be a weekend, so he didn't have to work, and after attending Gong Yamei's memorial service, he could return home.

Walking down the street, Tan Yong felt like he was walking on air, as if each step were on clouds, giving him an unreal sensation. In this dreamlike state, he arrived back at his own home.

His wife and daughter were both at home. Upon seeing Tan Yong return, Dou Hui asked, "Did you attend the funeral?"

"Yeah," Tan Yong replied with a nod, sitting on the sofa lost in thought. He pondered how to break the news to his wife and daughter.

"We're having Thai hot pot for lunch today," Dou Hui said.

"Okay."

"That hot pot we had yesterday was quite expensive, over 500 yuan," Dou Hui said, her heart aching. "If we buy groceries and cook at home, it would be enough for half a month's meals. Luckily, I packed the leftover Tom Yum soup, added some hot water, and cooked some vegetables in it. We can have another meal for lunch today and at least improve the cost-effectiveness a bit."

"Right."

Dou Hui walked over, looking at her husband's absent-minded appearance. She couldn't help but ask, "What's going on with you? I'm talking to you, and you seem so distracted, one word at a time. Is everything okay?"

Tan Yong raised his head to look at his wife, took a few seconds, and asked, "Is Yali at home?"

"Yes, she's in her room doing homework."

"Could you ask her to come out for a moment?"

"What for?"

"Just ask her to come out; I have something to tell both of you."

Dou Hui called her daughter with suspicion. Tan Yali was somewhat reluctant. "What's going on? I'm in the middle of a practice test. The teacher wants us to complete it on time, just like a real exam."

"Pause for a moment; Dad has something to tell you," Tan Yong gestured for his daughter and wife to sit on the sofa opposite him.

Both the mother and daughter understood Tan Yong well enough to know that he usually didn't hold such serious conversations. This made them uneasy, and Tan Yali cautiously asked, "Dad, what's going on? Did something happen?"

Tan Yong looked at the two of them, opened his mouth, hesitated for a moment, then smiled and shook his head. This series of inexplicable actions left his wife and daughter even more confused. Dou Hui couldn't help but worry, "Old Tan, what's going on? Don't do this; it's scaring us."

Taking a deep breath, Tan Yong said, "Right now, I feel like I'm in a dream, but clearly, I'm not."

"Dad, the suspense is killing us; just say it. What's going on?" Tan Yali asked.

"I don't know how to say it. If I tell you, you might also feel like you're in a dream, how could things work out so perfectly? We were worried about Yali's overseas education yesterday, and today, that problem is solved."

"Huh? What do you mean? Did you borrow money from someone?" Dou Hui asked.

Tan Yong shook his head, "Why would I borrow money now when Yali isn't going abroad immediately?"

"Dad, did you win the lottery?" Tan Yali playfully suggested.

"It's more extravagant than that."

"I can't think of anything else," Tan Yali admitted.

Tan Yong took another deep breath and slowly exhaled, "Do you know what happened today? When we attended Gong Yamei's memorial service, her lawyer was there. After the service, he told us something. Gong Yamei had left a will, dividing all her assets and evenly distributing them among the 'extended family,' including me."

"Really? How much will you get?" Dou Hui asked with concern.

"138,000 yuan per year."

"What? That's a lot! Gong Yamei was this wealthy? I heard you say her company went bankrupt..."

"Hold on, I haven't finished. It's 138,000 yuan every year, for twenty years, totaling over 27 million yuan."

Dou Hui and Tan Yali were left dumbfounded. After a while, Dou Hui covered her mouth and said, "Old Tan, you're not joking with us, are you?"

"Do you think, based on your knowledge of me, that I'm the type to make such jokes?"

"Is this for real?" Dou Hui stood up from the sofa, her body trembling. "138,000 yuan per year, my goodness, my goodness..." She was so excited she couldn't find the right words.

Tan Yali let out a long breath. "I need to catch my breath too."

It took the family quite some time to calm down. Next, Dou Hui was almost in tears of joy. "Old Tan, this is fate! Just like you said, yesterday we were worried about Yali's overseas education, and today it's resolved. It's like divine intervention! There's a saying, 'Heaven rewards those who work hard.' This must be what it means!"

Tan Yong chuckled. "What 'heaven rewards those who work hard'? I often went to Li Xueli's house for gatherings; did heaven decide to reward me?"

"I wasn't talking about you; I meant Yali! Yali works so diligently and seriously in her studies, and heaven sees that. So, it created this opportunity for our Yali to study abroad at the best university!"

"Yes, that's true," Tan Yong nodded.

"But seriously, isn't this 'reward' a bit too much? Yali going to study abroad would cost at most a few hundred thousand yuan, but you get to inherit over 27 million yuan!" Tan Yali exclaimed.

"That's right, so I actually feel quite uneasy about it. I can't help but think that I haven't done anything to deserve this, yet I'm inheriting such a large sum of money. It makes me a bit anxious," Tan Yong confessed.

"Why are you anxious? This money isn't stolen or ill-gotten; it's an inheritance willingly left to you by Gong Yamei. Plus, it's not just you; everyone in the extended family gets a share, right?" Dou Hui said.

"But I'm still a bit different from them. They all live in the same community and are together almost every day, while I just occasionally attend their gatherings. I didn't expect Gong Yamei to include me. And you know what? They have conditions attached to their inheritance. They have to stay in the Yuehai Bay community for the majority of the twenty years, or moving out means giving up the inheritance. Only I have no restrictions, which means I get to inherit these over two million yuan without any conditions."

Dou Hui was so excited that she could hardly speak coherently. "Old Tan... you see, oh my, this is like accumulating good karma! Gong Yamei is so wonderful; she's been so good to you."

"It's almost like I can't believe it," Tan Yong scratched his head. "And I feel like I should report this to the authorities."

"Report what? Is there a law that says the police can't inherit? Did you force Gong Yamei to include you in her will? Can your superiors even meddle in this?" Dou Hui argued.

"That's right, no big deal you can always quit. Dad, you're a multimillionaire now, are you afraid of your superiors?" Tan Yali chimed in.

"Don't talk nonsense; being a police officer is my favorite profession from childhood to now. To me, it's not just a job, it's much more," Tan Yong said.

"Exactly! My dad is the embodiment of justice, the nemesis of bad guys, a messenger of peace. My dad is so awesome!" Tan Yali hugged her dad's arm, smiling mischievously.

"Flattery!" Tan Yong playfully flicked his daughter's nose. The whole family burst into laughter.

"I'll go prepare the dishes for dinner."

"Mom, are we having takeaway Thai hot pot again? Dad is about to become a multimillionaire isn't that worth celebrating?"

"We're going out to eat!"

"Going out again?"

"Yes! This time, we're going to a high-end steakhouse!" Tan Yong agreed.

"Yes, that's fantastic!"

"Yali, what about your practice test..."

"I'll do it when I get back. Right now, I need to focus on getting close to a big spender." Tan Yali clung to her dad's arm.

"You're becoming quite the smooth talker, aren't you?"

"Hahaha!"

With both his wife and daughter so joyful, Tan Yong's mood was naturally extremely pleasant. It seemed that money could bring so much happiness to people. For the first time in decades, he felt this way.
