CHAPTER 36 - THE AUNT LOSES FACE
Madam Su and Yian helped Yun Qingqiao walk to the mansion's entrance, followed by Youzhu, Jingyu, and Chunan. They all came to a stop at the front door.
Ahead, the grand and luxurious house revealed itself to be the residence of the Deputy Prime Minister, situated in the bustling southern part of the city but secluded enough to offer tranquility.
"This must be Qingqiao," said a lavishly dressed woman with a hint of condescension.
Yun Qingqiao glanced at her, lifted the corner of her mouth into a slight smirk, and blinked. She chose to remain silent.
An awkward silence enveloped the air.

A middle-aged man who looked like a steward intervened, bowing and nodding as he said, "Miss Fifth, this is Aunt Zou."
Yun Qingqiao stood still, an ethereal presence seemingly untainted by the world's troubles.
Seeing this, the woman snorted,
"What kind of upbringing do they offer in Chuzhou? No greeting for an elder?"
Madam Su shot Yun Qingqiao a look and then sternly retorted,
"Is this how things work in the Deputy Prime Minister's house? No greetings for the legitimate daughter of the family?"
The woman dabbed at her mouth disdainfully with a handkerchief,
"Oh, a country bumpkin dares to--" She was cut off as a young woman resembling her tugged at her sleeve, silencing her.
Yun Qingqiao gave a subtle smile, sweeping her eyes over everyone present.
"Since when does an aunt become the master of the house? An aunt is just an aunt, not the lady of the house. At most, she's a concubine. Even if she's a favored one, she's still a servant!" She then turned to Madam Su,
"Am I right, Madam Su?"
Madam Su smiled, "You're correct, Miss!"
The woman hadn't expected this young girl to overpower her, leaving her red-faced so wholly. She was itching to slap Yun Qingqiao to remind her whose domain she was in.

Just then, another young woman approached Yun Qingqiao, dressed like a pure white lotus. Her makeup was meticulous, but she couldn't hide her plain looks. Though she smiled, Qingqiao could see the disdain and contempt in her eyes. Feigning intimacy, she took Qingqiao's other hand,
"It's so good to have you back, Fifth Sister!"
Yun Qingqiao let her hold her hand and responded with a smile,
"You must be Fourth Sister. I just returned and haven't had the chance to greet my sisters yet."
Just as the faux-innocent young woman was about to reply, Qingqiao crisply interjected,
"We've all been standing at the door for quite a while. Let's move this to the main hall, shall we?"
The onlookers, who hadn't gotten a good look at the Deputy Prime Minister's legitimate daughter, dispersed in slight disappointment. However, Aunt Zou became the hot topic among them, drawing a lot of gossip.
Meanwhile, the young woman led Qingqiao into the main hall, seating her near the head of the table. The Deputy Prime Minister was still at work, and his wife had been tending to her health in her quarters for years, effectively disengaging from household matters. The main seat remained empty.
Servants started bringing in a variety of fruits, snacks, and tea.
Yun Xiuwen, the father, had five wives. His first wife, Ye Heying, was 36 years old; the second wife, Aunt Zou Xiuli, was 39; the third, Aunt Yu Wanrou, was 38; the fourth, Aunt Liu Qinxin, had passed away and was a close friend of Ye; and the fifth, Aunt Lin Yiqiu, was 34.
Indeed, the second and third wives were older than the first wife. One of the main reasons Grandma Yun had brought them into the family as concubines was to have older women who could bear children more quickly.
