Chapter 10

Night.

Zhuang Jiang gazed at the scenery outside, her fingertips sliding across the floor-to-ceiling window.

Then, she looked down at the number on the screen. After a long silence, she pressed the dial button.

"You've thought it through?"

Huo Xiang’s voice came through the phone. It was still calm, still steady, yet it betrayed a hint of excitement that couldn't be entirely suppressed.

Zhuang Jiang gave a soft "Mm." She lowered her eyes and spoke. "I hope Auntie Huo understands that I am not doing this for Yan Man... If, in our future cooperation, you arrange anything that crosses my bottom line, I will terminate the contract with you unilaterally."

Huo Xiang paused, and only after a long moment did she speak. "Rest assured. I said I would not force you... to do anything you are unwilling to do."

"I will discuss all scripts, variety shows, and activities arranged by the company with you in advance... If you are uneasy, I can add an extra clause to the contract stating exactly that."

"There's no need."

Having spent several years with her in her past life, Zhuang Jiang naturally knew the woman's character.

Once she gave her word, she would not go back on it.

Zhuang Jiang looked up, watching the boundless night through the window, and softened her tone. "In the future, I will be in your hands, Auntie Huo."

The two spoke for a few more minutes before hanging up.

Tang Qing circled his arms around her waist from behind. Looking at her reflection in the glass, he asked warmly, "All settled?"

Zhuang Jiang nodded.

She turned her head slightly, reaching out to cup his face and kiss the corner of his mouth.

And then...

Under the warm glow of the lights, the two of them looked at each other and smiled.

Empire Entertainment, Second Floor, Meeting Room.

The primary sponsor for Director Zhang’s film, Lady Yun, was Empire Entertainment.

Now, a meeting room had been specifically borrowed...

For the purpose of selecting the female lead.

...

Lady Yun tells the story of the Southern Tang period (fictional), where consort kin held the reins of power. Yan Si, the Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace, was poisoned and left disabled. Following this, he lost interest in state affairs... but secretly established the "Life and Death Pavilion" in the martial world, uniting with Bai Luo, the young master of the Hidden Sword Manor, and Yun Niang of the Great Desert. From then on, the winds and clouds of the martial world surged, affecting the atmosphere of the imperial court... Finally, with the help of Bai Luo and Yun Niang, Yan Si reclaimed what rightfully belonged to him.

This was the synopsis of the script.

However, since the play was titled Lady Yun, it naturally focused heavily on this character.

As the most brilliant female figure in this story—

Yun Niang’s destiny was a tragic one.

She had no father or mother and was rescued by Yan Si as a child. For the sake of Yan Si’s cause of restoration, she went alone to the Great Desert... solely to win over the "Lone Eagles" (a code name for the people there) who lived deep within the sands.

She built an inn and established a reputation, a woman mingling with men day in and day out.

In the end, she finally helped him obtain what he desired.

...

In the corridor outside the meeting room, some stood and others sat; there were roughly twenty people left.

Among them were the popular actress Su Yun and the veteran star Qu Zhi... they had all come for Director Zhang’s production.

Director Zhang’s reputation in the industry was resounding. The films he directed in his early years had won numerous awards...

Consequently, the stars who appeared in them saw their market value skyrocket.

Even after many years, film critics and media professionals still held him in high praise.

In the film world, who wouldn't want to work with him?

It was only because he had returned to his family in recent years that he rarely filmed anything.

Thus, even before filming had begun, the movie was already famous... every company wanted a piece of the pie for their own artists.

The male lead had long been decided, and the other supporting roles were confirmed.

Only the female lead—the role with the most weight—had yet to be finalized.

Inside the Meeting Room.

Sitting in the center, Director Zhang already wore a look of impatience. He gave only a cursory glance to the candidates before waving his hand for them to leave...

Producer Chen, sitting beside him, handed him a bottle of water and said in a low voice, "We've been choosing for nearly the whole morning. Is there anyone you favor in your heart?"

Director Zhang took the water, his expression still sour. "I don't know what kind of mess the film and television industry has become these years. Even this kind of trash dares to come here for an audition..." After saying this, he took a sip of water and sighed. "If Yan Man were still here... if she were still here, everything would be solved."

The few people nearby felt their hearts skip a beat at those words, remembering that woman who was as gorgeous as fire.

A pity she died so young...

Aside from those in the industry, there were also sponsors sitting in the meeting room, and naturally, some disagreed. "Even if that person were alive, she would be over forty... what then? Would she play an aged Yun Niang?"

Director Zhang’s face darkened, looking as if he were about to flare up.

In the end, however, he remained silent.

Outside the Meeting Room.

Su Yun and Qu Zhi were sitting together. Their status was the highest here, so those standing nearby addressed them as "Sister Su" and "Sister Qu."

Su Yun was glamorous, while Qu Zhi was soft and elegant...

Each had her own merits.

Someone noticed a woman slowly walking down the corridor and, startled, spoke up. "Who is that?"

Who was she?

Everyone looked over together and saw a woman dressed simply, wearing white canvas shoes and a baseball cap... walking toward them. She had lovely features and slightly curly hair, standing about 168cm tall. Aside from the ruby studs decorating her ears, she wore no other adornments.

Hearing the voice, Zhuang Jiang didn't look at anyone or speak. She simply sat down in a spot and closed her eyes to rest.

Everyone was stunned. Even Su Yun and Qu Zhi were taken aback for a moment.

Some began to privately inquire about her, but among those present, not a single person had ever seen her before...

With such looks, even for a newcomer, she should have been very famous in this circle.

Yet no matter what they thought or how they searched, no one actually knew who she was.
