Li Shaoyang, 25, was the eldest son of one of the five prominent families, the Lis. He was bright and full of masculinity until a freak accident ten years ago changed him into what he is today—a secret known only to a select few. So, when Wang Lin pinpointed the timing of his condition, Li was both alarmed and hopeful.

"Can you cure me?" Li asked cautiously, afraid his hopes would shatter like a fragile dream.

"No big deal, it depends on you," Wang Lin lounged on the sofa, sizing him up.

"What do you want? Anything reasonable, my family can make it happen," Li offered earnestly, "As long as you can cure me."

Wang Lin raised a finger, "I don't need much right now. How about you owe me a favor, and I'll collect when I need to."

Li sighed in relief. A favor was easy. Heck, if it would cure him, he'd offer ten favors.

"Of course, as long as the favor isn't illegal or immoral," Li added cautiously.

"I'm a law-abiding citizen," Wang Lin chuckled. "After tonight, I'll prepare your treatment. I'll be in touch when it's ready.

"As for the cost..."

"I got it, I got it," Li quickly pulled out a checkbook, "Mr. Wang, here's 5 million. Let me know if it's not enough."

"Cough, cough, 500,000 should be enough," Wang Lin almost spat out his drink. He didn't expect such extravagance from Li, as if money meant nothing.

Then again, these wealthy families are worth billions, so it makes sense.

"Please take it, Mr. Wang. Consider the extra as a token of my gratitude," Li handed over the check.

Li wasn't worried about Wang Lin running off with the money. In this city, or even the whole northern region, the Li family could easily track someone down. What concerned him was whether Wang Lin could cure him.

"Alright, I'll take it. I'll be in touch in three days," Wang Lin said, pocketing the check and noting Li's contact info.

"I'll be waiting, Mr. Wang," Li replied, taking his leave.

At 7 p.m., guests in formal attire began to arrive, offering gifts and well wishes. It was a grand evening filled with the who's who of prominent families.

Older folks had started the evening but had since moved to a side room, likely to discuss business matters. After all, tonight was focused on the younger generation, celebrating Hong Ying's coming-of-age ball.

"The Zhao family gifts a pair of jade Ruyi, wishing Hong Ying all the best."

"The Huang family gifts a pair of top-grade jade bracelets, wishing Hong Ying ever-growing beauty."

And so on...

Wang Lin realized soon that tonight was a gathering of the younger members from various major families. The older generation had stepped aside, making room for the youth on this special occasion.

"The Yang family gifts a 500-year-old wild ginseng root…"

Wang Lin was surprised to see Yang Yang back in shape so quickly after breaking his ribs. "These big families do have some resources," Wang Lin mumbled.

Typically, with an injury like that, Yang Yang would be out for a month. But here he was as if nothing happened in just three days. The Yang family had some powerful connections.

As Yang Yang turned to leave after presenting his gift, his eyes locked on Wang Lin. A flash of malice appeared but was quickly hidden. Yang Yang, arm in arm with Qin Xue, strolled over to Wang Lin.

"Ha, look who it is! Wang didn't expect to see you here at Hong Ying's ball," Yang Yang said, his voice dripping with feigned warmth.

Wang Lin sensed a knife hidden behind the smile, but it wasn't particularly sharp.

"Is there a reason I shouldn't be here?" Wang Lin retorted.

"Ha, no, not at all. Just noticed you haven't offered a gift or blessings yet," Yang Yang hinted, leaving his words hanging in the air.

The crowd's eyes turned curious. Most knew Yang Yang, as his family was a secondary powerhouse. But they had never seen Wang Lin and wondered which mysterious, high-profile family he was from.

"Ah, I've got a gift," Wang Lin said with a chuckle. "I was just worried it might make you feel inadequate."
