CHAPTER 7 - QINGQIAO AWAKENS (PART TWO)
After a flurry of activity, people carefully removed Yun Qingqiao's dress to retrieve the hidden letter.
If it weren't for the fact that Yun Qingqiao was still a child, she wouldn't let anyone handle her so freely. The layers of ancient clothing were quite cumbersome, especially in winter when one had to wear many layers. She mused that it was fortunate she had crossed over as a young girl; otherwise, she wouldn't even know how to put on the clothes. Well, that might not be a problem; in well-to-do families, personal maids took care of dressing.

Lady Ye, her grandmother, pointed to the birthmark on Yun Qingqiao's right arm and said, "My precious granddaughter, you've suffered! I held you when you were just born. You were so tiny then, and so was your birthmark. Now, the mark has become even more beautiful, just as you've grown more adorable. It's only a pity that we've been apart for so long, and this is only the second time we're meeting."
Pausing briefly, Lady Ye added, "Your little hand feels so cold. Hurry, dress her quickly so she doesn't catch a chill." Then she turned to a nearby maid, "Su, go fetch the jade dragon-patterned hand warmer from my storage room. She'll surely love its color."
Lady Ye spoke affectionately to Yun Qingqiao, "From today on, you'll stay in this courtyard with me. Your maternal grandfather has been particularly busy these days, often secluded in his study working on something. Your arrival will be a lovely companion for me. Since your mother married and left, this mansion has lacked a young lady. I can only imagine how delighted your grandfather will be when he learns you're here. Ah, speaking of which, this is Su. She'll be taking care of you from now on. You can call her 'Su Mama.' She and your mother grew up together, almost like sisters. If you need anything, just let her know."
Only then did Yun Qingqiao take a closer look at Su. According to Lady Ye, she would act as a surrogate mother to her. Su seemed to be in her early twenties, which made Yun Qingqiao reflect on how women in ancient times often married and had children early, making twenty-something seem 'old.'
As she was thinking, Su, standing with her legs together, right hand pressing down on her left, bowed slightly and said, "This servant greets the young miss!"
Being from the modern era, Yun Qingqiao found the ancient customs of bowing and referring to oneself as a 'servant' a bit uncomfortable. She straightened her back against the cushion and said softly, "Grandmother, if Su Mama grew up with my mother and they're like sisters, she shouldn't call herself 'servant' in front of me. Since she's my elder, I should pay my respects to her, but…"
Lady Ye raised her hand to interrupt Yun Qingqiao, saying, "My dear, you are so thoughtful! However, while you can maintain such an informal attitude in private, it's important to adhere to social hierarchies and traditional etiquette in public. You're still young and may not understand the complexities of this, but the family you'll marry into will emphasize these matters greatly. It seems we'll need to find someone to educate you properly."
Hearing this, Yun Qingqiao understood that Lady Ye genuinely cared for her. But this only increased her apprehensions about life in ancient times. The rules and etiquette alone were overwhelming. Achieving grace and poise in every action seemed more complicated than passing an exam. Thankfully, being a young girl, she had time to learn. If she were an adult, any slight mistake could be disastrous, even life-threatening. Wait, did the previous conversation imply that her marriage was already arranged, even at her young age?
