CHAPTER 18 - TAKING IN A CLOSE AIDE (PART ONE)

Three months later, the little girl who had been rescued was wholly restored to health.

During these months, Yun Qingqiao adhered to the basic principle of a healer's compassionate heart, taking meticulous care of the young girl.

The girl's emotions had transformed—from the initial trepidation she felt in the hands of her captors to an unwavering commitment to her savior, determined to take care of her for the rest of her life.

One day, Yun Qingqiao stood by the window, draped in her coat, silently observing the courtyard outside. The bamboo leaves rustled in the wind as she turned to the girl she had saved and asked, "What are your plans for the future?"

The girl immediately knelt and bowed, saying, "Mistress, you are my savior. My life belongs to you. I have no other plans but to stay by your side and serve you for the rest of my life."

"You've been here for quite some time, and I haven't even asked your name. Do you have any family? How did you end up in the hands of human traffickers?" Yun Qingqiao had already had her people investigate the young girl. 

After all, to keep her close, she had to be sure of her background. If the girl had come from the capital city or had been sent by those who had caused her earlier misfortune, she couldn't possibly keep her.

Fortunately, the investigation's results satisfied Yun Qingqiao.

"My name is Er Ya. My parents were no longer alive, and I was left all alone. I was sold to human traffickers by an uncle who liked to drink. They, in turn, sold me to that place. I didn't want to make a living in such conditions, so I thought of running away, but I was caught and severely beaten," the girl narrated. Although she tried to maintain a steady tone, the pain and loneliness in her voice were unmistakable.

"How could they be so ruthless? If they wanted to keep you to make money, they wouldn't have beaten you so mercilessly," Yun Qingqiao asked deliberately.

"During the beating, I got furious and bit off a piece of one man's ear," the girl said with loathing.

"Haha, well done!" Yun Qingqiao despised those who abused their power. She sat down on her chaise lounge and continued, "Here's the plan: I'll consult my grandmother and my aunt. If they agree, you'll stay with me from now on. By the way, how old are you?"

"Thank you, Mistress! To answer your question, I—I mean, your servant, am eight years old," Er Ya replied, continually bowing her head.

Yun Qingqiao rose from her seat and helped the girl, "I just turned six, two years younger than you. You'll accompany me to meet my grandmother and aunt shortly."

Upon entering the tranquil hall where the venerable Lady Ye resided, they reached the main room. Yun Qingqiao performed a formal bow and greeted, "Granddaughter pays her respects to Grandmother. I hope you're well. I also greet my Aunt; you look radiant!"

"My dear, you see how sweet this child is!" Aunt Wei covered her mouth as she chuckled.

"Come, dear Qiao, sit next to your grandmother," Lady Ye warmly beckoned. "This young lady is not just eloquent but also universally endearing."

"Grandmother and Aunt do enjoy teasing me," Yun Qingqiao replied as she gracefully sat beside Lady Ye.

"So, what brings you here? Is there something you'd like me to discuss with your grandfather?" Lady Ye inquired.

Rising to her feet, Yun Qingqiao approached Lady Ye, bowed respectfully, and stated, "Grandmother, I would like to keep her with me. She has nowhere else to go; may I have her stay by my side in the future?"

Lady Ye tenderly held Yun Qingqiao's hand and said, "Ah, it's this small matter. Your aunt had mentioned to me a few days ago that we should find some tidy and clever girls to serve as your maids. Those currently serving you are much older; it would be more fitting to have a maid close to your age. As you grow up, it will be beneficial to have someone by your side whose background you're familiar with."
