CHAPTER 19 - TAKING IN A CLOSE AIDE (PART TWO)

Yun Qingqiao playfully stuck out her tongue and giggled, "Thank you, Grandmother. Thank you, Aunt." After saying this, she signaled the girl called "Er Ya" to come forward and give her thanks.

Lady Hou (Duchess) was Yun Qingqiao's aunt by marriage, Mrs. Wei. She looked at the now-healthy girl, who appeared rather well put-together, and asked, "What is your name?"

"In reply to Lady Hou, this servant is called Er Ya." Though the girl seemed a bit nervous, her eyes remained steadfast.

"Since you'll be serving Miss from now on, we obviously can't keep calling you Er Ya. Do you have any ideas, Qiao'er?" Aunt Wei looked at the young maidservant. She was not meek or submissive, making her well-suited to serve Yun Qingqiao's side.

"Aunt, I've thought about this. Let's call her Chu Nan. This name commemorates my first trip to the south, to the side of my grandparents and my aunt and uncle. I've had a carefree life here, and deep down, I am truly grateful," Yun Qingqiao said. Her face radiated childlike innocence, but her demeanor was earnest and severe.

"Mother, can you believe this is what a six-year-old girl says?" Aunt Wei looked affectionately at the young girl, thinking that children who grow up away from their mothers mature early.

After Madame Ye and Lady Hou asked Chu Nan numerous questions and received satisfactory answers, they took their leave from the mother-daughter pair.

"What do you think of this young maidservant? Can she stay by Qiao'er's side?" Having lived for many years and seen all sorts of people, Madame Ye trusted her judgment that this maidservant was a good fit.

"Mother, don't worry. We've already investigated her background when she came to live in our mansion; it's clean. Plus, Qiao'er saved her life. I'm certain she'll be loyal to her. Moreover, Qiao'er has good judgment; she may be young, but she's quite insightful," Lady Hou said with a smile.

A few days later, after a recent rain had washed the bamboo leaves, making them look even more lush and green, Yun Qingqiao enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere. 

At that moment, Madame Ye sent over two maidservants, saying her Aunt Wei carefully selected them.

Yun Qingqiao thought to herself that her aunt truly cared for her. Since these servants had also been scrutinized by her grandmother, they couldn't be lacking in any way. So, she decided to let the two maidservants stay.

The two new maidservants were pretty and clever, so Yun Qingqiao named them Youzhu and Jingyu. Youzhu was eight years old, and Jingyu was nine. Jingyu was the more composed of the two. She led Youzhu in kneeling to thank their mistress for giving them names.

Then Yun Qingqiao instructed Su Mama, the head servant, to train Chu Nan, Youzhu, and Jingyu.

The following day, with Su Mama's assistance, Yun Qingqiao dressed neatly and prepared to leave the house to pay her respects to Madame Ye. Just as she was about to step over the threshold, she found Youzhu and Jingyu kneeling at her door.

"What's going on with you two?" Su Mama asked, clearly displeased. These were the new maids she had just started training yesterday, and now they were causing trouble early in the morning.

"We have a favor to ask of Miss. Please don't be angry, Su Mama," said Jingyu, who was more composed, responding calmly to the reprimand.

"Get up, both of you," Yun Qingqiao said. "Even though the weather is warming up, kneeling on the ground is not the solution. Wait until I've paid my respects to my grandmother. Then, you can tell me what you want." Turning to Su Mama, she continued, "Let's go, Su Mama."

After a few steps, Yun Qingqiao looked back and saw that the two maids were still kneeling. She shook her head, "If you continue to kneel, there's no point in asking me for anything later. I won't listen. If you truly respect me, stand up now. I'll be back shortly."

Hearing this, Youzhu and Jingyu immediately stood up, respectfully acknowledging her words.
